This album was new and being promoted when my son and I saw Monty live at Scullers in Boston a few years back. He is a truly gifted mainstream jazz pianist, expert in all idioms, but somehow managing to include the cheerful lilt of his home country Jamaica in this one. It gets played a lot at our house..Simply happy, simply elegant..emminently listenable. And he always gives a wonderful concert. I rate this the best of those I have by him.. Jim "Jazzbo" Townsend

As a big fan of John Pizzarelli, who is now married to Jessica Molaskey, I have slowly come to appreciate her work as well. She has a delightful range, a beautiful voice, and a deeply embedded sense of the jazz idiom, despite her background as a broadway musical actress. I hope she will do more collaboration with her husband.( he shares the tune: "We're in the Money" and makes it ROCK) She is fabulous! And she surrounds herself with world class musicians, including husband and related Pizzarellis, and the great violinist Johnny Frigo.) You can catch John and Jessie every Sunday afternoon in a live broadcast from their Lexington Av. living room on Radio Deluxe, aired on various public radio stations. This CD is getting a lot of use in my car cd player..Jim "Jazzbo" Townsend

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Benny Carter at his finest!, December 3, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: & The Jazz Giants (Audio CD)
I have a huge number of Benny Carter's albums, and had the privilege of seeing him perform several times towards the end of his life, when he really was at the top of his game. This album captures him at his best. His artistry and elegance, and the fabulous rapport he develops with his fellow "giants" combine to give the listeners the very essence of his improvisational style and grace. His career was almost as long and varied as Duke Ellington's, and while no one equalled Ellington's output in terms of compositions, Benny Carter belongs in the pantheon of jazz greats. I never tire of listening to him here. This is timeless jazz, warm and mellow, simple and strong...jazz that soothes the soul. Jim T.

5.0 out of 5 stars a simply exquisite work of art, October 11, 2012
This recording is one of my Dad's favorite on vinyl, and mine, and I have had the cd (as well as his vinyl) for many years. The dates are 1962-1963, the venues Basin Street East, the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival, and the Village Gate. A live recording of some varsity vocalese artists at the top of their game, and pretty much setting the bar way high for all that follows..Taking jazz classics and giving them human voice...You will feel that they are on equal footing to the all-star musicians joining them in the rapture.. Annie Ross was replaced by Yolande Bavan. Oh how I would have loved to see her perform! Read the liner notes. You will be clued in to some of the greatest spontaneous moments in the history of jazz..The punch line on track # 5 "Feed Me" is worth the price of the whole album: "The way to a Man's heart is through his stomach..."Also of course: "Gimme That Wine".What a loss that Dave Lambert died so young...

5.0 out of 5 stars Lloyd Kaufman, author of "Make Your Own Damn Movie" at his best, January 10, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Foreplay (DVD)
These three short, low budget films are in the manner of Woody Allen, in that they re quite funny, even witty, and make use of name-brand actors between paying gigs, ie Mr. Kaufman gets them on the cheap. They concern very soft-core, perhaps far fetched fantasy stories about love relationships, using the producer's best Yale taught French: A "melange-a-trois"..

The list of stars is surprisingly long. Must have been real lean times in the 1970's when they were made because the actors include Zero Mostel, Estelle Parsons, Jerry Orbach, and Pat Paulsen.

I found Paulsen's deadpan role flat-out hilarious, and was mesmerized if not totally captivated by the fetching, lithe actress Deborah Loomis seen in all her glory as the full size Polish Doll. I got a copy for my most hip friend and he liked it. Funnier than it really should be, Kaufman made it when he was maybe 5-10 years out of Yale. You can read of his diverse accomplishments on Wikipedia. He is the CEO of Troma, which brought us the Toxic Avenger and numerous other cult characters. Lloyd is Yale's answer to Mel Brooks, though I'm not sure what the question is or was. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Al "Jazzbeau"Collins at his best, January 10, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of the final cd acquisitions before my wife put the hammer down;"You will never live to listen to all your vinyl, and now cd replacements". A valid point, but how neat it was to get this cd of some of Al "Jazzbo" Collins signature hip fairy tales. Jazzbo takes us back to that wonderful jazz era of the 50's. There is also a collection of straight ahead jazz from the era, including a riff on jazz vibes styles, and a number by the great Coleman Hawkins. Buy it for yourself, not the kids. They won't enjoy it; how hip can a kid get?but you will. Put it in the car stereo and I predict you will get to work with a smile on your face. Wifey wants me to start selling my collection on Amazon. This will be among the last to go. (Plus, you can and should get it new.) I only wish that Doctor Jazz or its assignee would reissue on cd the 1983 vinyl: "Al Jazzbeau Collins & Slim Gaillard..Steve Allen's Hip fables"..really hard to play that record in the car, no matter how hip I feel. These are the essence of jazz humor, elegance and understatement, right up there with Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough, and Mose Alison, whose paths I am sure have crossed.

5.0 out of 5 stars US as reluctant Giant becomes positive force in world governance, March 13, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Professor Mandelbaum provies a comprehensive, and important, picture of world events and the positive influence the inadvertent giant, America, has had since World War II. Without making value judgments, the author quietly and completely analyzes the impact on world events the USA has had, and is likely to have, unless/until domestic policy needs place a brake on it.

I truly hope our Congressional leaders read this book before it is too late.
