5.0 out of 5 stars From the perspective of a participant - rabble, November 5, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm Rabble, one of the people who helped start Odeo and i'm mentioned a bunch in the first couple chapters. This review might not be useful for evaluating the book as something to read, but i figured this might be a decent forum to provide a review.

The story is very well told. It's a captivating read. It's very surreal to read about your friends and former co-workers in a book like this. Most of us live our lives only ourselves. Having this book is kind of like having a well researched MTV Rock Documentary about our work, friendships, and time in our lives. I think if you interview enough people, look at what happened in any situation, it's easy to put a spin and story on things. None of us know the details of everybody else's life.

I wish there'd been more discussion about the technical and models we pulled from to build twitter. Where the ideas came from and how they were put together. It's very weird to see how much focus there is on people's drinking, clothing, hygiene, and being broke. That we were pulling from txtmob, the unix finger command, carlton university's status update system, bike messenger dispatch, blogger, etc... that's not as sexy a story. That we considered how to look at transitions of mediums from desktop to web, from web to mobile, as a place to create new systems for communications in old ways, isn't as cool as intrigue amongst friends who ended up creating twitter. There's a lot of the people and not as much understanding twitter and it's context.

The order of things as they happened and as they are told in the book isn't the same. This is ok, i think, mostly because the book is about telling the story of twitter's creation. It's no a strict chronology. Reordering things makes for a better story arc. There were a number of people not interviewed and i think their story was diminished. Some of us were talked about more because they fit a better story arc.

One last thing, i'd say that Twitter's management problems were due to lack of ability to come together and make a decision, and not the anarchists refusing to follow rules and allow order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally somebody who really understands hackers, December 2, 2012
So much has been written about software developers and hacker culture is done by people who haven't spent the time to figure out how it really works. Coleman has taken her academic work on hackers and made it in to something that is both accessible and has intellectual depth. Well worth reading for anybody who's trying to understand the culture of hackers, the culture of people who make software which is reshaping the world.

One really cool part of the book is it gets in to the relationship between hacker culture and politics. Why do hackers become political and around which issues.

The USB doesn't seem to play any video formats either, but it's a decent tv for the price. I'm happy with the TV because i wanted something simple to plug in to my xbox.

5.0 out of 5 stars nifty device, June 18, 2012
I bought it a few months ago and really quite like it. It works well and i finally feel like i'm in control over my house heating system. I don't use the remote control stuff. I think it does reduce our energy use. Mostly it's the kind of thing which although cool, you don't notice once you've got it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good biking gloves, February 10, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I wanted something to wear on chilly portland winter mornings. These gloves work great for that. They probably wouldn't be good in super cold weather, nor would they hold back water. But they block the wind and keep my fingers toasty. Not to thick, or bulky, i can keep them in my jacket pockets no problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but is quite small, August 28, 2011

I know, they provide the measurements, but still, it's a tiny container. Works for us because we just use it for home kitchen scraps, but we have to take it out and dump it in the compost bin every day or it overflows.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible hose, failed in 2 months, kinks a lot as well, August 28, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
From the reviews here, and elsewhere i was expecting better. But this hose completely failed within 2 months of getting it. The outer lining split from the hose and then it started leaking, with tiny sprays of water.

I expected something of high quality, and got something which should have been sold at the dollar store.

On top of it completely failing, it kinked a lot when dragging it around the yard to water my garden.

AVOID THIS HOSE!

5.0 out of 5 stars What can i say, cable worked, July 3, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This cable does what it says. Nice long crimped ethernet cable. You would not believe how much better streaming video looks over this cable. The blue color makes all the difference. Gray cables are only half as fast. The super fast blue Cat6 cables die if you wrap it around a 90 degree angle, so always go with the traditional classic blue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow recipes in bite size 140 character tweets, October 31, 2010
I got a copy of this book as a gift. It's great, i like twitter, and thinking about how to be concise.

The author has taken recipes, lots of them, over 1000, and wrote them in the shortest form possible. I thought it'd be hard to decode, figure out how to translate the short hand in to food on the table. There's a guide, but i didn't need it.

There's a game you can do with it, pick a recipe you have no idea what it'll look like, follow the discussions, and cook it. Then compare the food as you eat it with the wikipedia page about the dish.

Eat Tweet's a great gift for the tech savvy chef.
