5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely underrated, March 10, 2003
This review is from: Iron Path (Audio CD)
This album is incredible, I believe that it is a must buy for all avant-garde fans. It features Ronald Shannon Jackson on Drums, Bill Laswell on bass, Sonny Sharrock on Guitar, Peter Brotzmann on Taragato, Stritch and Sax. This album is rare because Laswell was able to get Brotzmann into a studio, even though he is a staunch free-improvisationalist. In my opinion, all jazz/rock fusion artists should listen to this to expand their universe of what can be accomplished with aggressive music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Major Influence In My Life, February 25, 2001
This book is an introduction to the wealth of perspective of Black Feminists. Using whole essays by Black women in the US, this anthology highlights some of the best in Black Political Theory. One of the things that becomes extremely apparent is that Black Feminists are experts in the issue of differences between people. In one of the essays, Audre Lorde says that the future of the planet depends on women redefining difference. In this vein Audre Lorde has been one of the most influential people on the issue of intersectionality and positionality, meaning that people are diverse in a multitude of ways and that they occupy many different spaces in the human universe. Get this book, it will change the way you see everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reggae, January 31, 2001
This review is from: Conscious Party (Audio CD)
This album is Ziggy Marley's best album. Nothing the Melody Makers have done compares to Conscious Party and One Bright Day. Incredible musicianship accompanies well written songs and beautiful lyrics sung by Ziggy and one sung by younger brother Stephen who is equally as talented as Ziggy but who has a distictive voice which is more like Bob's early singing. Crucial album. Get it now!

Steel Pulse mix excellent vocals and spectacular songwriting together. This album rivals anything that Bob Marley did. A must for all roots and culture reggae fans

2.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies, January 24, 2001
This film immediately became one of my favorite movies and sparked an interest in the work of Walter Mosely. I read the book and the book is excellent. I advise anyone to both read the book and see the movie. The main character, Socrates was easy for me to like and I was able to understand the struggle to make yourself better and to find dignity in daily life. See this movie!

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, January 24, 2001
This review is from: Parable of the Talents (Paperback)
The only drawback to this incredible book is that it ends too quickly. It seemed to me that the ending was very non descriptive of all the work that the main character did. I give much props to Octavia Butler for creating scripture for an imaginary religion. This book and the prequel - Parable of the Sower are both important looks at the future. Some might say that it is pessimistic, but I think that something like this is possible sometime in the future, if not 50 years into the future. I also like the commentary on what could happen if public schooling were eradicated. This book makes me grateful for what does exist, but also makes me aware that these things are not enough and also that they are also in danger.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books I ever read, January 24, 2001
This book describes different types of love and touches on love's relationship to social justice and feminism. It helped me affirm my conviction that the many forms of love need to be examined more closely and taken more seriously in scholarship and in life itself. Truly eye opening.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Voice must be heard, December 29, 2000
Morgan's book wasn't what I expected, but it brought up a number of points that can't be ignored in the Black Community. She writes about how many independent women negotiate their dating relationships as well as how she deals with sexism in Hip Hop culture.
