5.0 out of 5 stars Does as advertised, November 9, 2006

Works very well - a bit slow to warm up. Not having an on/off switch seems weird to me ... but it works fine. Nice hot crusty paninis at a very affordable price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, February 14, 2006
Standard Dora book but a complicated pull system that had both tabs ruined 5 MINUTES after the book was used by a kid. They spent all their time figuring some fancy pull tab sytem that is 3d - and forgot that KIDS use the book. And their precise directions and badly designed system means we now have a book which doesn't work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Music Great ... Photos Contacts well sort of, August 5, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
True to its promise it is a great music player and the itunes software is intuitive and makes it easy to create playlists. The enclosed earbuds are so-so - but it does work as promised, and in my case needed a large chunk of the 60GB though in total between photos and music using about 26GB - so unless you own 500+ cd's 60GB may be more than you need.

The photo bit works as promised but while the screen is sharp the pictures seem a tad fuzzy to me, and while the concept of a slideshow is nice not really using it that much. Also haven't used the TV slideshow feature which would probably make me like the photo bit more. I think there is a way to store the whole photo file not just a cut down version - so it becomes sort of a backup. But I have too many photos to do that for.

I also bought it to store my contacts/calendar - and they make it sound easy. Well perhaps for MAC users - but for a PC user regardless of my trying to use Palm Desktop or Outlook the contact feature doesn't seem to work and the process is horribly explained - just plain awful.

Also one note of caution - if you are going to carry it around in bag or pocket probably worth getting a cover/case. Almost immediately I noticed a small scratch on the screen - I was obviously not being careful enough. Unless you treat with kid gloves - get a cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where is the education bit?, February 27, 2005
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
Sorry to see that they have sold out just like anyone else. It is shocking that for the 50 cents they could have spent to actually have the magnifying glass or binoculars have a little bit of power they put in crappy clear plastic lenses that does not make either functional. Proving that for a buck they are willing to sell out on one of the things that made the Dora show popular and on the acceptable TV list in our house. As one reviewer noted - this is about five minutes of fun before it goes on the bottom of the toy pile. Save your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good haircuts - no tipping!, January 28, 2005
Love the no tipping policy which is always such a scam. Friendly staff though a bit "efficent" about things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Changes TV and even your life a little bit .. probably deserves five stars, November 10, 2003
It gets a four from me - probably because I have had it so long I see some of the warts and/or things they could do better (how about a function that starts recording one show when the other ends - if they overlap - a bigger issue as I see more and more shows that start at 9:59 ER on Thursday for example - perhaps because of things like TIVO).

But in the end it is awesome - easy to set up, generally works perfectly and lets you take control of your TV/entertainment viewing. Watch on your schedule, never have to worry about start times or getting home - watch live stuff and get up for thirty minutes to run an errand or jsut answer the phone. Have't found the reccommend function that useful - and I probably watch more TV as it ensures I never miss a program. But I watch far more programming ( stopped surfing, and don't watch ads) and it helped elminate the need for Netflix.

Would like a bigger hard drive, a bit faster processor and it is time for an OS update. It is also pretty pricey given what some of the cable/satellite guys are charging when they have this piece of equipment (like 1/3 the monthly price). But would I buy it again? In a heartbeat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book from a very unique perspective, June 17, 2003
This review is from: Pursuing Happiness (Paperback)
Actually had Stan the Man as a professor at Wesleyan - frankly a bit on the dry side - but always full of fascinating facts and information. And he was always willing to chide the "life was better 100 years ago" nonsense.

As a writer and economist he is GREAT and this book is so clear and full of smart common sense thinking it is scary to think that for a lot of people it is full of revelations that challenge the group think. If you like economics and history you can't miss this.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say - like RAS, June 12, 2003

Is this a genre changing book like a Tolkein or Donaldson. Nah. But he writes well, much better than the average fantasy writer. Well worth a couple of hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted, June 12, 2003
Use this more as a travel babysitter. Picture is great - and while I am sure the sound would be woefully inadequate for a big action movie - it works fine for kid's shows. Plus looking at it never had any doubt the sound was not great.
I do think the battery life could be better - key hint be sure to take the brightness all the way down or else you will get about an hour of battery life (I would agree with other reviewer that it would be easier if that was a button control rather than buried in the feature menu). When properly dimmed down I get way more. The battery life is still not great I would rather have bought with a bigger battery - but you have to buy it in addition to the unit and it ain't cheap.
Not quite ideal for the car but it is a big enough screen that it can be used there. Great for planes and hotel rooms. Very happy with the purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea - poor execution, November 16, 2002
Like all of the series - generally good subject matter and a dash of learning. The idea is scenes with the shapes (circle, oval, triangle etc.) outlined in the picture (wheel on a train, door in a house etc.) - great idea. But the shapes are not attached, just little cutouts. The problem is that all the shapes in this book come out so of course any child will lose half of them by week two. Secondly when you try and put the shapes back into the book (you tak eit out to see the shape) it is tough for an adult to do it, worse enough a kid. The fit is too tight. So they go in loose and have a tendency to fall out.
All in all a novel idea, but does not make any sense for kids. Skip it.
