1.0 out of 5 stars Meh. In the end, not worth it., December 19, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We purchased the Tivo Roamio as a part of an overall evaluation of alternatives to standard package cable/satellite. When we activated our TiVo service ($15.month) for over-the-air digital channels (we live in Austin, TX) it was not clear to us that there would be a substantial "early termination" fee if we were not satisfied. Our mistake, but do note that there is a significant fee if you cancel in less than a year: understand that with your $50 Roamio box you are also committing to a $180 annual expense.

We tried the service: despite a strong WiFi signal the unit consistently "fell off" of our network, so the shows that were available we never recorded. We tried various configurations of the air antenna, and were able to get some local channels but little else. As a result, program availability for recording was flaky at best. Clearly, this was our responsibility: we were doing a test of alternatives to standard cable, after all, so we knew that some technologies and programming options would not work. Tivo Roamio was one of the "#fails."

In the end, with the early termination fee and the associated hardware costs ($50 for Roamio) we spent just over $200 (6 mos @$15 plus termination fee). If we were to go back to a DVR service the choice would be clearly be DISH Hopper rather than TiVo.

So what actually worked? Netflix, and Amazon streaming: in both cases we have most of the programming we want (missing Formula 1, but we can get that elsewhere). Cost is comparable to TiVo, but with none of the hardware, connectivity, termination-fee complications. Since they are on-demand services we can watch when we want, without interruption, which was the real value proposition for TiVo.

Overall, TiVo seemed like a promising alternative until we tested it: the hardware is attractive but the lack of flexibility, early termination fees, and rigid policies led us to conclude that for $200 we learned a lifelong (no Tivo) lesson. We did managed to cut our monthly programming fees from well in excess of $200 (for all cable/sat + streaming) to well under $50 (Netflix + Amazon, via Amazon Prime.) Definitely a successful test in that sense.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but just OK. There are better options for racing applications., December 3, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For under $200 or less, this is an "OK" unit. It is reasonably well-built.

For Air Density, the choices are either high-end units ($300 - $600), asking your competitors (not recommended, at least not twice) or using a Smart Phone app with a nearby weather station (about $5.) We've opted for the Smart Phone app: it is generally very good, and there is generally a weather station within a mile of the track. We've built a nice performance baseline that serves us well.

The issue with this unit is repeatability and measurement inertia: without a fan to force a sample into the unit, this unit is heavily dependent on ambient storage conditions: if it's been in your warm car, and you step into cooler air...count on about an hour before this unit reads correctly.

The other issue is that it reads Relative Air Density (%) only; more contemporary jetting requires air density (%), air density ratio (ADR), and/or density altitude. This unit provides only air density (%). Combined with the slow response time to air condition changes this unit quickly moved to the back of our toolbox.

If you want handheld, local air density, I'd recommend the Ketsral 4250 (about $250 - $300 if you look around).

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine Weber; Worth full price paid., December 3, 2015

Bought a cheap "universal" at The Home Depot. Lasted less than two weeks. This is a genuine Weber part: it will fit, and it will work. And it will keep working. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great router: Advanced options, easy set-up. What's not to love?, December 3, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this as a replacement for G-series router, and then deployed it as a replacement for a combination cable modem + router. This is a well-built (I dropped it onto concrete...don't do the same yourself) and easy-to-configure router that offers significant advanced options that are likely sufficient for any home network. Security, guest networks, reserved addresses (for printers....), separately configured 2.4. and 5G bands (so you can segregate stream media from ordinary connectivity....) and others.

Setup was easy: I followed the instructions (TIP: follow the instructions: I didn't, and got stuck (because I know everything...) and then quickly reverted to the docs, after which installation was a snap.) Note that I did the "Advanced/Manual installation as I knew I'd be doing reserved addresses, etc. The manual was great.

In combination with CM500 modem and EX2700 range extender (we have a large stone fireplace that rises two floors -- creates a significant wi-fi "shadow") our home network is performing brilliantly.

Like all Netgear products, this router includes complete settings backup capability, making recovery very easy if ever needed.

Highly recommended.

FURTHER TIP: All of our home networking electronics are powered through TrippLite UPS units: our network will stay up for 45 minutes after power failures. If you aren't using UPS units, consider that as part of your home network design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it. You know you need it., December 3, 2015

This is one of those "greatest tools ever..." that is now a permanent part of our racing gear. Unlike cheap small tools, this ratchet is very well built and has a a very nice finish. The ratchet action is smooth and sure. Whether you use it a little or a lot, when you need it you will be very happy that you have it. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great replacement for proprietary Smart TV wi-fi dongles., December 3, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Our son has a Philips smart TV in his room; it includes a wi-fi dongle that is prone to failure. The replacement for the proprietary dongle is the same as the cost of this unit, and given that the dongle had already failed once....

We secured this to the panel TV mount behind his TV with a zip-tie; installation took less than 5 minutes.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple setup w TWC; Significant downlink boost., December 3, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Netgear's CM500 was simple to set up and has significantly improved our wi-fi performance and internet connectivity.

We are a TWC subscriber: a quick call and this cable modem was registered and running: our home network was down for less than 30 minutes (including the simultaneous setup of a Netgear N750 wi-fi router.)

Prior to installation, we were using a TWC-issued cable modem/router (combined unit). The lack of configuration options (no guest network, no 5G network, no reserved addresses) spurred the implementation of the N750; the monthly rental charge ($5) and performance of the modem drove the decision to upgrade the modem to an "owned" rather than rented unit.

In the 30 days prior to replacement, we consistently measured (via DSLReports) 40-50 Mbps down, with about 3-5 Mbps up. We are TWC "Turbo" customers -- this downlink speed is about half of what we should be seeing (Claimed speed is +80Mbps).

Immediately after installation of the CM500 (measured directly from the modem) we saw downlink speeds approaching 100 Mbps, inline with expected performance. With the N750 and EX2700 (see separate reviews) deployed and the full network running we are now measuring consistent 80-90 Mps down at all points in the house.

Given the price, the unit will pay for itself in just one year; given the performance I'd buy it regardless.

Highly recommended.

NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender, Essentials Edition (EX2700)
NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender, Essentials Edition (EX2700)
Price: $34.99
24 used & new from $17.56

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly, installs easily., December 3, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Netgear N300 Range Extender worked exactly as described and intended. Our home has a large stone fireplace that rises two floors, with a resulting wi-fi "shadow" behind it. Unfortunately, our master bedroom is in that shadow: the range extender resolved this issue.

Installation was very easy: I followed the steps and the unit self-configured with the addition of the normal inputs (wi-fi password, etc.). The unit was installed in its final location and running less than 30 minutes after opening the box.

We've not had any issues since implementation. Well worth the cost.

My wife loves this curler: 110-240 VAC, and fits easily into a roll-aboard/overhead Travel Pro. (Yes, all of her stuff fits onto one bag, as does mine.) Seriously, this is a great curler, and of note, she has never burned herself with it!
