4.0 out of 5 stars it's probably time for a fresh remake of the movie., April 12, 2014

Great intro into The Shop's universe and solid follow-up to Carrie and The Shining (in its own 'special children' way). It sort of felt like an origin story for an X-Men character, which is a good thing. Great villains, likable protagonists, impressive action scenes, massively cathartic climax... What more can you ask for? I am glad I decided to revisit this story after so many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fitzgerald's fantastic talent is the real star here., March 26, 2014

The first half was stronger than the second but man, what a writer. Hemingway may get more props for writing "clean" prose but Fitzgerald's talent transcends Hemingway's comparatively limited and far less touching style. Haunting in so many good ways. I will be reading it again. This book is very special.

So good.

So. Good.

As a political science nerd, the insights in this book are pure gold. As a fan of Gonzo, the style (albeit sober compared to some of his other works) is just brilliant. His humor and intellect come through so clearly in '72 that it's almost like reading Thompson's personal diary sometimes. Less accessible than some of his less thorough books but well worth the read.

Not all of Fitzgerald short stories stand the test of time, but when the prose is good, it's really good. I doubt that you will want to read this cover to cover. Keep it around, read a story here and there, go back to it every once in a while... t's sort of like a box of chocolates you sometimes get into when you're in the mood for it. Oh, and Benjamin Button is hidden in there somewhere, which makes owning this collection well worth your while.

Switching from non-fiction to fiction is hard, but with the first volume in this new series, Livingston proves that it isn't impossible to pull off. Exodus is an easy read, the story seems to be going somewhere, and I look forward to reading future installments.

PS: Cool cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars I still love the movie but King's version rocks., March 26, 2014

Is it possible to love the movie and love the book? (They're completely different.) Yes. They both work very very very well. The Kubrick adaptation is a completely different story, so if you have only seen the movie, you owe it to yourself to discover King's original vision. You will love it too.

Super clear, super easy to follow, super helpful. It gets right to the point, guides you through all the steps, and makes publishing to KDP easier than it would be if you had to figure it out on your own.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sleeves are cut too short for a cycling jersey, March 26, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Warning: if you buy this jersey to fit you properly (not loosely) and you don't have T-Rex arms, the sleeves will be too short. This thing isn't cut with longer sleeves like a real bike jersey. It's cut like a sweater. Standing up, you're fine. But bent forward with your arms extended like you're in your hoods, the sleeves ride up behind your wrists. Not cool. I'm going to have to wear arm warmers under the sleeves to make it work and that sucks. Also, 45-60 days to arrive? Lame. Buy local.

Solid. So much cooler than any of the movie and TV adaptations. The narrative tricks were clever, the writing solid, the characters fleshed out... I can see why this made King a star. Solid book all the way around. Big thumbs up.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to give this 5 stars but 4 will do., March 26, 2014

It took me several decades to finally get around to reading The Shining (I'm a fan of the movie but I had never read the book), so I managed to read it and Doctor Sleep back to back, as a complete package. Overall, good stuff. No major complaints. I can't really bring up the negatives without throwing some spoilers into the review, so if you haven't read it yet, it's a good book and you should read it. Stop here and go buy it. If you don't mind spoilers, read on.

1. It seemed that King had an idea for the book that changed about two chapters in. The first few chapters with Danny as a kid were really good but I don't really see hoe they fit with the rest of the book. It seemed like he started, put the project away for a few years, then picked it up again with a completely different idea for its direction. That was odd.

2. The way he wove Sidewinder and the old Overlook locale into this story was a little bit of a stretch. I get what he was trying to do and I respect the attempt, but it felt a little forced.

3. All that lead-up to the big fight and... it's over that easily? Bummer. I expected some sparks, man. Remember Carrie? Firestarter? That was a little disappointing.

But overall, it was good. Not great but good. And it had little moments of brilliance that made up for all the parts that were a little disappointing.
