Excellent service. The package arrived in time and in very good shape. The coffee itself was as smooth as was advertised. It is amazingly well priced for a coffee of this quality. My congratulations to the Pablo group.

An up to date and comprehensive dictionary for anyone up to a lower-advanced stage of Arabic. I wish the Arabic print had been a bit larger, but in general it is clear enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of articles on modern Egypt, January 26, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book covers a very wide variety of subjects: population, politics, urbanization, civil society, the economy, trade, tourism, religion, the media, and the daily life of the average Egyptian. In a collection of nearly 1200 pages, it is to be expected that the quality of the articles will vary somewhat. Moreover, everyone who reads the book will no doubt wish for something more to have been included or something to have been covered in more detail. However, the sections on which I am informed – – the economy, politics, trade, and the structures of everyday life – – the coverage is very good. In some respects this is a follow-up to " L'Egypte d'aujourd'hui" published in 1976, but this book goes well beyond the earlier one in terms of coverage. If you are reasonably fluent in reading French, I very strongly recommend this and wish that there were something comparable in English.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the best, November 29, 2014

This review is from: Les Feuilles Mortes (MP3 Music)
The best of the best. If one could have only one album of this great singer, then this would have to be it. The album contains 14 songs and each one of them is a master piece.

Understanding Cairo: The Logic of a City Out of Control

5.0 out of 5 stars Could provide lessons for other urban centers, November 17, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Cairo has attracted a number of excellent books in recent years, and this one ranks among the best. It does not deal with a description of the monuments and the antiquity of the city's history, but rather the problems that the the city currently faces. These issues-- for example, such as overcrowding, an inadequate infrastructure, wide dispersions in income and wealth, frequently long distances from the slums to the jobs that that the slum dwellers are able to get, the potential for violence and disorder when large masses of disgruntled persons coalesce together, etc.-- reflect what other rapidly growing urban centers in the world face. The manner in which the authorities in Cairo confront these issues and, that is hope, resolve them, could serve as salutary lessons to other large urban conglomerates.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very unbalanced treatment, November 1, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an unbalanced book. It devotes about 5 chapters to Muhammad Ali while lumping together Nasser and Sadat into a single chapter. Arguably, the policies of Nasser and Sadat are far more important to understanding what is happening in Egypt today than what happened 150 years ago. There is a need for a concise history of modern Egypt, and one hopes that the author will revise his book to right the balance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., November 1, 2014
This is a disappointing book. It can confuse because it at times skips steps, and the absence of a sufficient number of illustrations means you don't know what the author really means.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book that would benefit from more careful proofing, September 7, 2014
Tarek Osman provides an analysis that would serve as a good background for understanding recent developments in Egypt. He covers both economic and political factors. However, after discussions with former members of former President Mubarak's Cabinet as well as with opposition figures, I feel that Osman does not give due weight to what they regarded as the principal reason for the uprising and what put Egypt at the tipping point, namely, the succession factor. I was repeatedly told that the building up of Gamal Mubarak to succeed his father as President was the crucial issue -- "we did not want a 'hereditary republic'" was how one of them put it, while the word "dynasty" frequently recurred in the conversations.

The book is fluently written, but unfortunately is marred by a number of incorrect statements, misspellings, and omitted references; the author and Yale University Press have not done justice to themselves by their sloppines. I have communicated some of these mistakes to them, and there is thus no point in broadcasting them here. I hope they will be corrected in a revised version, because the book merits a second edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Potentially very useful, but pretty useless with the existing verb list, September 1, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a baffling book. It consists of 213 verb tables that act as a paradigm for the conjugation of 10,000 Arabic verbs. In this, it follows a number of other available books, such as those by Sam Ammar & Joseph Dichy; Daniel Reig (both very comprehensive), or shorter versions concentrating on the most frequently used verbs by John Mace; Wightwick & Gaafar; Scheindlin; etc. It is also printed clearly, with the verbs fully voweled, and with very legible text. The book under review, especially because of its comprehensiveness, therefore, has the potential to be of enormous benefit to students.

However, the peculiar manner in which the verb list (the 10,000 verbs) is presented negates the book's usefulness. It lists the verbs under which of the 213 paradigms (conjugations) the verb would follow. Thus unless you already under which paradigm a verb falls, i.e., you already know the how the verb is conjugated, you could have quite a task to find it (the verb list consists of 167 pages). For most students, this defeats the point of the book -- if you already know the pattern of the conjugation, why would you need this book?

The more sensible and useful way of listing the 10,000 verbs would have been to list them alphabetically, either in root form, as done in the other books mentioned in this review, or (preferably) in whole word order (as, for example, in Schendlin) and indicate against each verb a number from 1 to 213 to show which pattern of conjugation it follows. I would urge Mr Shaffique to adopt this approach in a subsequent edition; he would put us all in his debt. As the book stands, it cannot be recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Explain the absurd price, please!, August 2, 2014
Not nearly as authoritative as the textbooks by Samuelson, Mankiw, Krugman, Baumol, etc, etc, and wildly more expensive. I was given a review copy, and returned it.
