3.0 out of 5 stars Explain the absurd price, please!, August 2, 2014
Not nearly as authoritative as the textbooks by Samuelson, Mankiw, Krugman, Baumol, etc, etc, and wildly more expensive. I was given a review copy, and returned it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's good to have the original updated, May 28, 2014

This review is from: Plain Words (Kindle Edition)
This is one of the most useful books on writing clear and courteous English, something that is a must for everyone but even more so for government officials. The original book by Sir Ernest Gowers was produced for the British Civil Service, and has been considered a classic for several decades. There have been two revisions (I have read both) that attempted to make it a little more modern. They were fine, but it was time for another edition. This one (the third) does not base itself on the most recent version, but goes back to the original and makes such changes as the editor (by the name, one of the Gowers family) feels are necessary to make its comments more useful for contemporary usage.

1.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly useless program, May 28, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a completely useless and frustrating product. It comes with no documentation on how to use the product. It consists largely of a number of phrases to be used in different settings, without any indication of what the individual words mean. It has no explanation of how and why the words are put together in the way they are. Moreover, at least my copy was defective in that the intermediate Arabic part of the CD refused to play. If you enjoy this level of frustration, I suggest you beat your head against the table; it will be cheaper, and you will at least know what you are doing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful and flexible instrument, May 14, 2014

This flashlight offers the option of using it at different power settings. This provides a setting for very (!) bright, using more battery power, and more conservative, when a very long range is not required. So far every thing has worked satisfactorily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensible advice!, May 14, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book, like several others, offers some sensible advice to accept what one cannot change or affect. However, the examples chosen to illustrate the maxims are (generally) quite amusing and serve to sugarcoat the pill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding help, March 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a very practical dictionary of Modern Standard Arabic. It contains about 17,000 of the most common words and phrases, together with pronunciation and examples of usage. I find that I refer to it more than I do to the other six or seven Arabic-English or Arabic-French dictionaries of a comparable or larger size that I own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same level as Samuelson and Mankiw, March 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an excellent textbook, clearly written, that one could safely put in the company of those by Samuelson and Mankiw. In some ways, for example, in the macroeconomic section, it goes beyond the material in Mankiw. thus, the present book has a good discussion on estimating the potential rate of GDP growth of an economy that, at least in my edition of Mankiw, does not. The fiscal policy part of the discussion is also a bit stronger.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent production, February 21, 2014
This review is from: Arms and the Man (DVD)
This is an excellent production of the play, almost up to my favorite theater version that starred Richard Briers as Bluntschli and Alice Krige as Raina. I saw that four times in London, and am very sorry that they didn't make a movie of it (there was no DVD in those days). I've seen the play performed many times in many places, including Cambridge, Mass; Karachi, Pakistan (by the Old Vic Company); Lahore, Pakistan (in which Bluntschli was played by Geoffrey Kendall of "Shakespeare Wallah" and father of Felicity Kendall), as well as in Oxford and Cambridge, England) and it never fails to amuse and entertain. I watch the version sold here about once a year. I hope you will enjoy it too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless without audio CD or teacher, February 8, 2014
This book simply contains several pages of words without showing how they are written, i.e., it does not show the direction of the pen. The pronunciation part is of even less use. The letters are shown with very brief comments, e.g," 'ain is a very strong guttural, produced by compression of the throat and expulsion of breath." There is no audio CD for you to hear this strange sound (it's unlike any in English) nor is there a diagram showing how the tongues, lips, (i.e., the organs of speech) should be shaped for the sounds. The book is quite useless for someone studying on his/her own.

The sickness of an acquisitive society,
The sickness of an acquisitive society,
by R. H Tawney
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book, but get the complete version, January 23, 2014
The advertised book is only the first version (86 pages). The final version was entitled simply "The Acquisitive Society" and runs to 188 pages. It's well worth reading the complete version.
Incidentally, a perceptive reviewer of the earlier (advertised here) version said that the title should not have been "The sickness of an acquisitive society," but rather "The acquisitiveness of a sick society." He had a point.
