3.0 out of 5 stars Not Sour, April 20, 2014
A disappointing purchase. I was really excited to have a tart jelly bean, but Brach's Sour Jelly Bird Eggs were not sour in the least. The flavors themselves weren't bad, but they didn't have even a slight tartness to them. I much preferred the Warheads sour jelly beans.

The Gaia Websters
The Gaia Websters
by Kim Antieau
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book of Becoming, March 10, 2014
This review is from: The Gaia Websters (Paperback)
In post-apocalyptic Arizona, a healer of mysterious past begins to unravel the threads of her own becoming and thereby helps to shape the world. Gaia Websters is a story of love, community, healing, and self-discovery. Initially it reads as a sort of eco-utopian dream, but I loved the juxtaposition of the very back-to-nature mindset and the necessity of technology that the book takes as it progresses. Well-written with a fast paced plot and lovely characters, Gaia Websters quickly became one of my favorite books!

2.0 out of 5 stars Who Needs Feet Anyway?, December 23, 2013
The Equestria Girls dolls leave a lot to be desired. Fluttershy (and friends) is cute but poorly made. Her hair is made of the same material as other My Little Pony figures, which doesn't seem to be suitable for use in anything other than the small amounts used for a mane and tail.

The biggest disappointment, however, was noticed the moment the doll was taken from the package. Imagine my daughter's surprise when she gently pried off Fluttershy's boots and discovered that she had nothing but joints where her feet should be!

I definitely feel that my money would have been better spent elsewhere. Thank goodness I didn't pay full price.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Beautiful in Person, December 6, 2013

I bought this for my 10-year-old daughter and was very pleased. It's just fancy enough with the sterling plating, but it's not so precious that I worry about her losing it or breaking it. Opens and shuts easily. I cannot wait to give it to her for Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Honorable Tribute to Kaitlyn Arquette, July 25, 2013
It is difficult to believe that, when a young woman is murdered in cold blood, the greed and corruption of those best suited to help find her killer would leave her murder unsolved for twenty-four years. Unfortunately, One to the Wolves: On the Trail of a Killer is not one of Lois Duncan's works of fiction. It is the true story of her own family's tragic loss, the loss of her daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette. And it is a story with no end.

One to the Wolves picks up where it's prequel, Who Killed My Daughter? left off, but it is no longer just Lois's story, or even Kait's. As the trail of her daughter's murder slowly unravels through newspaper articles and recorded conversations, Ms. Duncan is transformed from a grieving mother into an advocate for other families living in the shadow of unsolved crime. Through the hellish, infuriating moments of missing evidence and uncooperative investigators and witnesses, the kindness and honor of those willing to help shines.

For as involved and twisting as the "plot" of this true crime may be, the book is a quick and riveting read. Ms. Duncan's loving devotion to her daughter is reflected on every page, and that alone is enough reason to pick up this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, July 24, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Monster's Daughter is a wonderful addition to the mythic fantasy genre. The book follows Emily, the daughter of Frankenstein's monster, through the tragedies and triumphs of her life in the Old West. Despite her odd appearance, her sometimes frightening superhuman powers, and being raised by a father who never experienced childhood himself, Emily's life is fulfilling and safe. But when the greed of the California gold rush creeps in to disturb her world and the fantastically strong "Mr. Em" cannot save her, Emily must overcome the harshest lesson of her life and learn to be whole again.

A completely new take on an old favorite, with well developed characters and a rich landscape, The Monster's Daughter is a book I know I will come back to read again and again. Kim Antieau manages to take a work of horror (Shelley's Frankenstein) and weave it into a tale of brilliant, fantastical beauty. She's turned a monster into a hero and his daughter into a healer. I loved it!

My 6-year-old daughter really wanted to stop sucking her thumb, and asked me to order the pink Thumbuster for her. She was very excited when the product came, and she wore it without any complaint. There was no chafing or other issue. After going her first night EVER without sucking her thumb, her confidence was raised enough that she felt she didn't need the Thumbuster anymore. She kept wearing it for a few more days at my insistence, but when she forgot to put it back on after washing her hands for dinner she went the whole night without the Thumbuster... or sucking her thumb!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparks curiosity, December 29, 2012
This was purchased for my 9-year-old son and was a big hit. The "bugs" are all in good condition within the resin and are easily examined. You may want to purchase a better magnifying glass, but the magnifier that is included in the package is sufficient for most. The guide could be a little more detailed. I suppose it's another excuse to go to the library! :)

The Hape Checkout Register is a great alternative to the plastic, noisy, beeping, battery hog register toys. It seems quite durable and is pleasing to look at, with bright but mellow colors and natural wood portions. My chidren especially love the pushable buttons, credit card swiper, and register paper to write on. They did, however, suggest that it might have been more fun to have a roll of register paper in place of the abacus.

My only complaint about this item is that, from the very first day we opened it, the paper money and coins often get stuck behind the cash drawer. There is no easy way to retrieve the paper money, which jams the drawer, and no easy remedy that I have yet found for this problem. It often results in a quarter of an hour spent tipping the toy upside down and feeling along the insides to dislodge the paper. Still, if I have to choose between stuck paper money or beeping and flashing, I'll take the stuck paper money any day.

2.0 out of 5 stars I prefer my history without blatant Anglo-centrism., January 12, 2012
This review is from: George Washington (Paperback)
This book came highly recommended by a homeschooling website, so I was looking forward to reading it with my children. The text gave an interesting and unique narrative of George Washington's life, but the illustrations were quite offensive. In the depiction of Washington's wedding, the reader looks through the window of the estate to see the newlyweds dancing, while outside the black children gaze longingly at the scene. Martha's son winks at them from inside. On the next page the text states, "George Washington was everywhere, and his hundreds of slaves and servants kept everything spick and span and in beautiful order." The accompanying illustration shows the wealthy Washington and his family dressed in their finery and ambling happily along in front of a golden field of wheat. The field is peppered with the ambiguous forms of slaves, shirtless and without faces.

I realize that this book was written in the 1930's and that Washington had slaves. I am not trying to argue that this fact should not be acknowledged, but the matter is presented in a very insensitive and Anglo-centric fashion. This may have been accepted in the 30's, but I think modern parents and teachers can do better.
