5.0 out of 5 stars A Declaration of Independence for the Soul, May 27, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The greatness of Lisa Romano is not just about her writings, her teachings, and her mentoring, it is about the greatness of America itself. The greatness is tied up in the words, "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" because she encompasses with the greatness of her soul all that is spelled out in the Declaration of Independence, that each person is entitled to these unalienable rights which the Declaration says has been given to all human beings by their Creator. America is the only land where broken, abused, and tortured souls can realize their dreams, find safety and security, and rebuild their shattered lives. The Road Back to Me is not a typical self-help book, it is a testimony of one woman's awakening to find her true self and reclaim her birthright as Thomas Jefferson so eloquently inscribed for all generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Historical Adventure, March 18, 2016

Canadian-born E. Paul Bergeron shows his fascination with America's Southwest in this exciting first in a new action-adventure series set in Spanish New Mexico. William MacLeod is part of a fur trapping party deep in New Mexican territory when they are ambushed by Indians. When two of his companions are killed and another severely wounded, MacLeod is forced to abandon the furs and seek help in Taos. A violent confrontation with a band of Apaches pits MacLeod against the tribe's leader, Romero, a brutish thug who has been terrorizing the missions and settlements of New Mexico. When MacLeod arrives at an hacienda owned by a wealthy Spaniard named Don Agustín de Cordero, he makes the acquaintance of Don Agustín's daughter, Maria, a beauty whose education and knowledge of English far exceed women of her social class. But Maria's wealth make her a target for scheming suitors such as Miguel Griego, whose own father doubts his worthiness to marry Maria, "If I were a younger man, I might send your mother to Mexico and take this woman myself. You have done nothing to earn such a treasure." Indeed, Miguel Griego's list of misdeeds include debauchery and human trafficking. When Griego discovers that MacLeod and Maria are romantically involved, he swears vengeance, and MacLeod is forced to abandon his original plans to save the woman he loves. Packed with action, adventure, and richly-drawn characters, In the Shadow of Vargas is a thrilling page-turner with an engaging and suspenseful plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cinematic classic about the human condition, March 6, 2016

This review is from: Misery (Amazon Video)
Great performances by James Caan and Kathy Bates, who won the 1991 Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of fallen nurse, Annie Wilkes. Much has been written about this movie, but what makes it truly a cinematic classic is that it is open to interpretation by the viewer. Annie Wilkes can be a stand-in for alcoholism, drug abuse, an abusive relationship, or anything that threatens a person's survival at his most basic level. Nice cameos by Lauren Bacall as a concerned literary agent and Richard Farnsworth as a small-town sheriff who employs old-fashioned detective skills to crack the case. A Steven King classic.

A Ride to Khiva
A Ride to Khiva
by Frederick Burnaby
Edition: Paperback
Price: $35.95

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Game Classic, January 10, 2016
This review is from: A Ride to Khiva (Paperback)
A Ride to Khiva is as witty and fresh today as it was in 1877 when it was first published. Burnaby's account of a close shave with a Khivan barber unknowing of the ways of Western shaving methods is laugh-out-loud funny; his descriptions of his Turcoman and Kirghiz caravan drivers is both touching and troublesome. By powers of observation and analysis, Burnaby draws a direct link between smoking and heart disease: "The host taking up his pipe, slowly inhaled the fumes, until after about half a minute he fell back upon his carpet, apparently stupefied by the effects of the tobacco. Indeed, I subsequently heard that all natives that indulge in this kind of smoking are subject to heart disease..." Students of Central Asia and the Great Game will find "A Ride to Khiva" full of insight into the character of the various players, and an insider's viewpoint into the often brutal but never boring Great Game, which many claim is still being played today.

The Japanese Lover: A Novel
The Japanese Lover: A Novel

2.0 out of 5 stars A Plane that Never Takes Off, November 15, 2015
In The Japanese Lover Isabel Allende breaks all the rules of writing fiction: she describes a scene without actually showing the action. While it wouldn't be so problematic for 1 or 2 chapters, after a dozen or so it becomes frustrating. Many scenes are like a plane that taxis around the runway but never takes off. Allende presents a scene but fails to bring it to its dramatic climax. It's a shame because in "The Japanese Lover" Ms. Allende missed a golden opportunity to write the next big role for a Bette Midler, or a Goldie Hawn, or a Lainie Kazan, or a Pat Morita or a George Takei. Maybe some lucky screenwriter will finish the job Ms. Allende started.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Enjoyable Adventure Flick, October 29, 2015

Great action sequences, great special effects, good locations and some very good acting, notably by Murvyn Vye, the Massachusetts-born, Yale-trained actor who played the Colombian gangster El Moro. His look, behavior, and accent are so authentically South American, only a trained Spanish linguist would be able to detect his American nationality. Notable performances also by Paul Douglas as Vic Leonard, the American partner, who adds humanity and vulnerability to his tough guy role. Stewart Granger is handsome and gorgeous and a young Grace Kelly holds her own against this stable of veteran actors. A very enjoyable adventure flick.

Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea
Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea
by Steven Callahan

4.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable tale of survival against all odds, October 2, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Adrift is about one man's solitary journey, both internal and external, on the perilous ledge between life and death. Steven Callahan is attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua, but before he departs, an elderly fisherman points to his vessel, the 21' long Napoleon Solo, and says, "In such a small boat? Tonto!" Fool. The rest of the journey is fraught with danger, starting from when the Napoleon Solo capsizes and sinks, forcing Callahan to abandon ship in a rubber lifeboat.

Anyone battling demons of their own will find solace in Callahan's struggle to survive, which is a metaphor for all mens' struggles to survive an often hostile world with often insurmountable odds.

"I imagine two stone-faced poker players throwing chips into a pile. One player is named Rescue and the other is Death. The stakes keep getting bigger and bigger. The pile of chips now stands as tall as a man and as big around as a raft. Somebody is going to win soon."

The ocean, the sharks, the weather, and hunger are all metaphors for the demons we all battle on a daily basis: joblessness, despair, jealousy, hatred, vengeance. Yet, depite the terrible privations he experiences on the sea, Callahan also experiences moments of profound solace:

"As I look out of the raft, I see God's face in the smooth waves, His grace in the dorado's swim, feel His breath against my cheek as it sweeps down from the sky. I see that all creation is made in His image."

A truly remarkable tale of survival against the odds, "Adrift" is a a great gift for anyone going through a crisis. It will remind him that "...to be well fed, painless, and in the company of friends and loved ones are privileges too few enjoy in this often brutal world." Well said Callahan!
