5.0 out of 5 stars Very strong female alliance and well character development., December 25, 2000
This review is from: Peking Opera Blues (DVD)
I used to love this one and consider it as a sentimental drama. It do has meaning something, in a hilarious, entertainment way. Now I own the DVD, play it over and over again. Finally I can read the hidden message. In it's multilayers there's a little bit of everything. It's feminism above all, IMHO.
It doesn't matter if you know nothing about Chinese history. Tsao Wan could be the most bewildered role to the audience, rebel without a cause. She should knew her action might lead to her father's collapse. Though dress like a man, she's fragile inside. Sheung Hung is a material girl care about only her own profit, provide comic relief. She has justified herself by come to the rescue for Tsao Wan, still lovable. Pat Neil seems to be quite ordinary in comparison, actually toughest of the three leads. Helping uncle Fa escape shows her tenderness. Her wish to be an actress only got the blame everytime there're bad things happen. ( For ex. Troops wrecked the theater. ) Cause only male were allowed to perform on stage at that time. Then I found similar tradition in ancient Britain too. ( Shakespeare In Love ) Women were under restraint by old culture. She grew up in the troupe. She tried to prove her talent, how good she could be, seize every chance. But the first obstacle came from her father, how ironic. ( Well. " It's the trend of time, and the father merely trying to protect her " kind of speech. ) Though she has no ambition, was drawn into the revolute unwittingly. Sally Yeh was trained hard to perform her own acrobatics, without a stunt double. To make the character convincible. She's at her best, never can be more gorgeous than this role. To see greedy warlords scramble for power and profit. How flexible the manager ( Wu-Ma ) is. There're diversity characteristic in this hilarious film.
There're some outtakes in the trailer. The catchy ballad along with the soundtrack quite enjoyable. Those " hide and seek "
roar with laughter scenes. And the metaphor " Life is dramatic " theme. You can watch this film many times and still find things you missed before. My only criticism would be, if they spent more budget on shoot some substantial landscape, might persuade me it's in real Beijing. By the way, I think the English subtitle is O.K. but there's a pun joke it can't deliver well. While the warlord took Pat Neil to blackmail her father, he asked what's tonight's show? It was named " Stubborn King " the true meaning is " force her to be my concubine ". Sorry force you to tolerate my poor English.

4.0 out of 5 stars I still prefer " Wheels on Meals ", December 23, 2000
I wasn't a fan of Jackie Chan or action films, some of them are pretty good, though. The only reason I see it might because of Lola Forner. Along with " Wheels.... " are the only two films I know she's in. And she's only supporting role here, doesn't has much to do and disappear midway, since then, the story drag and went downhill, hold on to Jackie's fight scenes only. And the ending cheesy and unbelievable. I don't care about Alan and his girlfriend. Want some fun? The gay waiter is impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruel, but it's human nature!, December 21, 2000
" Despair " really touches me. I can experience how Robin feels. Once famous " the most promising star " now an outcast and forgotten by showbiz. A downhill career and lack of love, Robin seek consolation from a humanform, very rare species lizard named Medusa. Deep down in his illusion ignoring the outside world. Robin was no more remembered. When he failed the final audition, He lost all the hopes to live, part of curiosity maybe part of suicide attempt, He took the final act regardless of Count D's warning...... On the solemn funeral those betrayers condolences for him, praised how great he could be if not died so young, only lip service, these people deprive of his last opportunity, and these whispers might gone with the wind quickly, soon will be forgotten. At least Medusa be his companion. Maybe it's love.
This could be a spoiler to diminish your fun to enjoy it, I'm trying to express my feeling. A deep story. Besides, the animation and the music both good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A smart rehash of " Time After Time " ., December 20, 2000
This review is from: The Iceman Cometh (DVD)
Though the plot is not original enough, still has some fresh elements, very Chinese style. My English is poor, can't tell the story well, 1st reviewer did a great job helps a lot. Fung San was Chinese version of " Jack the Ripper " travel through time to present Hong Kong. ( Well, not actually " Time Travel " but frozen over three hundred years and resurrect, still young and alive.) Our hero took on the mission to chase after the rapist. Ching encounters with the streetsmart hooker Maggie, She uses him as a servant / bodyguard and drag him into her deceiving world. Due to Ching's higher moral standard, he has a hardship to fit in ( fallen ) modern society, and split with Maggie when he find out her tricks. The whole process how he fells for this feisty, vigorous not-so-decent lady, has a struggle against his will, all the laughter came from. Fung San go with the flow easily, still a villain/ robber/ murderer and about to strike again, living on the verge of dark society, Maggie became San's prey accidentally. The rescue leads to the final showdown between Ching and San, Maggie was took as a hostage, Ching must prove his love for her, to save her life, and will he sacrifice for her? Basically the storyline is the martial arts version of " Time After Time ", more hilarious, action packed, and shows off both Yuen's solid stunts, I mean " real stunts " especially rare to find in recent years H. K. films. Unlike Jackie Chan, How to describe Yuen Biao's characteristics ? His small figure make him " as light as a swallow " looks as if he can leap so high and flying without a wire. Besides, he can act in this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars I went to cinema 5 times when it first released., December 20, 2000
This review is from: Wheels on Meals (DVD)
It's a fairy tale. And Silvia is a fantasy. Grand scenery of Barcelona, Spain. Nonstop spar, witty dialogue, solid stunts, action packed. You got everything here. Jackie Chan do have an international vision, not only because its foreign background, the cinematography not as coarse as most of H. K. films, never dated a bit to me, I love this kind of fairytale anyway, IMHO.
And don't miss the uncredit cast, when aged streetwalker Jennifer finally pay off and with a tiny tip to Jackie, get one more spring roll in return, and her bargain with customer, belly laughs. Enjoy !

5.0 out of 5 stars I've played this one over 100 times !, December 18, 2000
This review is from: Princessa (Audio CD)
If you're a fan of Sandra's, You'll definitely love Princessa. Or even Sarah Brightman albums produced by Frank Peterson. All 18 tracks in this album are fabulous. ( 12 melodies though, 6 Spanish version is bonus.) None a weak track, you'll hooked immediately, Just listen to " Anyone but you ", " Seven days a week ", " The night "," Again & again ".... Overall, very European and Sandra style, dance oriented, much melodic compare with her " I won't... " album. It's well worth the money, hard to get out from your cd player.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST TV SHOW, GREATER THAN LOTS OF FILMS !, August 28, 2000
Due to my very limited English ability, without any interpretation or subtitles, I can't fully understand all the humor, still hilarious and great fun. ( I've visit " Moonlighting, on the web " and " Blue Moon Banter " to put all the details together, the Episode Guide, plot summary, witty dialogue, etc. They did help a lot, thanks for the hard endeavor. You people are so great ! ).
Time has prove it. " Moonlighting " never aged after long 15 years, and it's new millennium now. Glenn Gordon Caron must be the most humorous writer in Show Business. Wish I can see more drama related to him. And the spar/ love/ hate relationship between Cybill and Bruce, on and off screen, provide best gossip, made me laugh out loud all the time. You must admit, Bruce took the glamour from heroines in all of his films, Cybill is the only one who may share the equal spotlight, 50-50, not overwhelmed by Bruce's maniacal star quality. And Cybill wasn't even a comedienne before " Moonlighting " ( I guess ? For I have no idea who she was before the show. )
Though I enjoy, love and miss the show so much, only personal. There's barely no chance for it to be aired in my country again. And I may say I haven't seen Cybill for almost a decade. ( Except one TV- movie on HBO. ) We didn't even have " Cybill Show " here. What a country! I'm miserable. Thank God, I found this DVD on Amazon, and it's great fun. It's only a beginning, the " Best " has yet to come. Please release more episodes, like " Atomic Shakespeare ", " A Womb With A View ", " The Dream Sequence....", " Symphony in Knocked Flat ".....and the final climax " Lunar Eclipse ". I anticipate them desperately. There's no other TV shows or a movie in any delicacy, similar, even feels like " Moonlighting ". Bruce was never more attractive than David Addison, and I'd love to see more Cybill. Please any company release more Cybill's drama, on DVD format, I'll buy them from Amazon. And do more comedies, please, Cybill. You've got talent to make people laugh. ( I love " Chances Are " as well. )
P.S. This DVD quality is OK with me, sound and picture, not bad at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars ( WHY DON'T THEY ) SHOW SOME GRATITUDE AND RESPECT TO GEORGE, August 9, 2000
This review is from: The Deep End of the Ocean (DVD)
A child was missing. Beth's guilty almost damage her marriage, abandon her career and neglect other children. Finally she get over it and luckily to find her boy after 9 years. It was supposed to be a humanity and very touching drama. The biological family want him back, I can feel it. But they don't have to cut him off from George. The good man adopted Sam and brought him up as his own. Have some empathy, the kid love him. He's a friend not an enemy. Why don't they try negotiate to share Sam's custody, 3 days a week or something, be friends with George. They all live in the same community after all.
For they treat George so mean, I don't feel the story convincible.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE WHOLE ALBUM IS AWESOME, 3 TRACKS IN PARTICULAR., August 9, 2000
This review is from: La Luna (Audio CD)
I prefer Sarah sing more POP music, for I knew her since " DIVE " her best album so far, in my opinion. And since she cooperate with Frank Peterson, I even consider her as a member of " Sandra's Family". For they both got similar ethereal atmosphere in their music.
Sarah's ambition obviously more than this. When classic meets pop, " LA LUNA " is a brilliant showcase of diverse musical elements, from classic to trip-hop, jazz, good combination, better than " EDEN ". I'll single out 3 tracks as my favorites : " SCARBOROUGH FAIR " everybody loves it. " WINTER IN JULY " kinda like Sandra's feel, I think so. " HIJO DE LA LUNA " She sing in fluent Spanish, so stunning. Let alone the melody is hauntingly beautiful. A worth-while album.
