5.0 out of 5 stars Good for a basic understanding of the Ottomans, January 29, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Really nice overview of the political and military history of the Ottoman state, starting from the Tribe of Osman up to the last Sultan and the establishment of the Republic.

This book does not go into great depth, and it does not cover things like culture or the arts in favor of a direct history of the Empire and the Sultans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating survey of the papacy, from humble beginnings ..., December 18, 2014

A fascinating survey of the papacy, from humble beginnings through the heights of power and arrogance, to the loss of temporal power and changes in scope in our modern day. Anyone who loves European history should own this very readable and endlessly interesting book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing series of books, December 18, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Absolutely amazing series of books. Not an exhaustive study of any of the cultures, but a great overview and gateway to more research. The books themselves are gorgeous, which good heavy paper and brilliant covers. A great addition to any history lover's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a romp through the terrible fielders, hopeless batters, October 8, 2014
This is a romp through the terrible fielders, hopeless batters, lunatics, and assorted flops. There's an entire chapter dedicated to the most over-paid Yankees. It's a really fun read, because the author doesn't just put out the failures, he gives them context to the time and the teams.

Many of the stories will have you laughing, some are really kind of tragic, and some will make you wonder WTF happened, but you'll be entertained.

I found this at my local library; now I want my own copy for re-reading during the offseason.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good hook, but will need work., February 8, 2014
This review is from: The After (Amazon Video)
The Pilot for Chris Carter's "The After" did a decent job of setting the stage. We met the characters, had the stage set, and enjoyed a pretty good episode.

I especially enjoyed the hints that there people are somehow central. The tattoos, the missing day, the shared birthdays.. all point to a fun weird romp.

But there needs to be a whole lot of character development to make me really care what happens to these people. Right now, we have broad sketches and stereotypes. Make them real people, and I'm hooked.

I'm in for the first few episodes at least. Let's see where this goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bargain for a great game., October 17, 2012

After being thoroughly disappointed by Civ V, I wanted to go back to Civ IV. However, my disks had vanished in a move. So I downloaded The Complete Edition. Great decision. Getting all the sub games and mods in one package and having everything right on the hard drive makes for a fantastic gaming experience. Well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent examination, April 2, 2012
This book is an incredible read, as the author does a fantastic job of introducing the reader to the myriad facets of life in the Frankish Empire of the 9th and 10th centuries. Everything from diet, prices, building styles, and social norms to the mechanics of how the state and church ran things. Frequent references to original documents really helps put things into perspective.

My only quibble is that in many places terms are introduced but not defined. It's left to the reader to understand through context what is meant. I don't know if this was present in the original or was a problem in translation. Also readers should understand that this is not a traditional history. Aside from a timeline in the back, there is no attempt to tell the history of France from Charlemagne and his descendants. This book is solely a look at the world and the people.

I mostly read history for pleasure and to get ideas for fantasy role-plying games. This work succeeded on both counts.
