5.0 out of 5 stars If you think the cover is amazing, wait until you read the book, March 29, 2016

If you think the cover is amazing, wait until you read the book. EMERGE is one of--no wait--IS the most clever book about mermaids in the current YA market. Easton has created a meticulously creative world in her debut (WHAT? she's a debut author?) that will delight young and old. Her effortless writing pulls you in on the first page and keeps you holding your breath until the last. I loved this book so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clever look into a script reader's life in Hollywood., August 8, 2015

First off, Take Fountain - once you discover the meaning behind it - is one of the best titles ever. Second, Novak is a great writer. Take Fountain is filled with script coverage samples that are both spot on and hilariously entertaining. Writing coverage for screenplays requires adverbs and adjectives not usually found in the same sentence structure together and Novak proves here to be a master of this skill. The book is also filled with tongue-in-cheek Hollywood-ease that often demands a second or third read over. Novak, a real live Head of Story Department at a monster talent agency, is himself a monster writer. Thoroughly entertaining for those inside Hollywood and out, Take Fountain is unlike any novel I have ever read. I'm glad I don't have to write the coverage on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The mesmerizing life of a physician--behind the scenes., May 13, 2015

What a great read! Kaufman writes with command of both narrative and storytelling. The alternating chapters between Rebecca's young life and her professional physician life keep the reader engaged throughout the entire novel. Rebecca's character is whip smart and in her later life, her medical prowess is thrilling to witness. Kaufman, a physician herself, masters the fine line between stale medical procedures and thoroughly amazing discoveries. Each patient Kaufman introduces - and Rebecca treats - has their own unique story and path. Yet somehow, Kaufman sweeps these smaller subplots together and weaves them into the main storyline without the reader ever missing a beat. This is Rebecca's story, but we get so much more! A fantastic look into the personal struggles of a physician. Old secrets, painful memories and gruesome crimes are all unveiled as we watch Rebecca reach the height of her profession. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars you can practically feel the shaggy carpeting, May 9, 2013
There's past tense and future tense, and then there's Leavitt-tense. Leavitt-tense is when the main storyline so seamlessly intertwines with backstory that the reader can't remember how it is they have come to know these characters so deeply. All they know is that they have.

Is This Tomorrow is a mystery with suspense enough. A child goes missing and his community struggles to carry on with no answers as to why or how. Were this story to include only the linear plotline, it would be as gripping. But Leavitt isn't the kind of author who goes for suspense alone. Leavitt's real strength lies in the characters. Flawed, scared and sometimes deceitful, these characters are your brother, your parents, your children, and perhaps even you. This is why Leavitt's plots can never stop at suspenseful and always move on to haunting.

The 1950's setting is pitch-perfect. You can practically feel the uneven shaggy carpeting of Eve's house under your toes and taste the warming nutmeg in her pies. And you can smell the animosity that this Norman Rockwell-type community feels for a divorced Jewish mother who dares to date and has to work. Is This Tomorrow is a gem. And (hopefully) a future film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Davenport is the Meryl Streep of authors, August 21, 2012
Each short story in Opium Dreams is a small masterpiece. And each one is so completely different from the others that I was a bit skeptical this was the work of a single author. How can one author create such completely unique and captivating voices? Then I realized how: Davenport is the Meryl Streep of authors. Put on a different wig and the transformation is complete - this is what Meryl Streep has said of her characters. I'm thinking Davenport must have a closet full of wigs herself. An amazing piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Perfect 40 th Birthday Gift, June 14, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
What a great, beautiful book this is. Karen A. Chase describes her travels and her milestone (hitting 40) with grace and eloquence. The photography is the perfect exclamation point to her beautiful descriptions, and that she can do both - photograph and describe Paris - is not always met with this much success. Chase knows when to let her readers pause and digest her words, just as she seems to know when to let herself pause and digest her age. Turning 40 isn't as scary as we might think, and Karen A Chase proves it. This is the perfect birthday gift for anyone hitting the same milestone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steals your heart, November 5, 2011

This review is from: Night Swim (Paperback)
Jessica Keener's Night Swim reads like finely spun silk. Every word sails into the next like only the greatest of writers can do. These lyrical sentences sweep you off the page and into Sarah's sixteen year-old world so quietly you won't remember where you are for a few blinks after you close the page. Sarah's heartbreak is haunting, familiar and ultimately beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars cannot wait for the movie, April 4, 2011

This review is from: Pictures of You (Paperback)
After I read Pictures of You I couldn't get the image of fog out of my head. Cape Cod fog is different from any other; it's clean and mysterious and refreshing. Just like Caroline Leavitt's writing. I would imagine the author spent a year - or maybe years - on the book, but much like Girls In Trouble, it reads like she sat at her computer and typed it up in one sitting. It's impossible to put down, and impossible to stop thinking about once you finally do. Oh, and I'm in love with Sam too. His trials with asthma are heart-breaking.

I cannot wait for the movie version!
