5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTY OF A BOOK, October 18, 2014
Yes, this book is for children and fortunate is the young one who receives it. Again, yes, this is a book intended for children but this adult is keeping it for the sheer joy and pleasure of leafing through it. Each time I return I see something new in the beautiful full page reproductions or learn something more about a particular artist's life. For me, it is a privilege to be able to peruse Lives of the Great Artists again and again.

Author Ayres who studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art and Sotheby's Institute in London introduces young readers to twenty of the world's greatest artists from Giotto (1267-1337) to Van Gogh (1853-1890). Each artist is accompanied by his life story, how and where he worked, and lavish reproductions of his works.

Also included are fascinating chronologies of the artists pinpointing not only dates of birth but where the artists lived, who asked them to create something and why, and yearly notations of output and events. There is, of course, a Glossary and a listing of where major collections of the artists' works may be found. It is hard to imagine more comprehensive coverage of these artists.

The author's Introduction will be especially helpful to young readers as she explains how the works of art came to be - that many were intended for churches, palaces or private homes. Or, they were commissioned by rich powerful people who commissioned paintings of Bible stories to show how religious they were or by those who wanted paintings of their holdings and their families as evidence of their wealth.

Lives Of the Great Artists would be a perfect gift for a young person to receive before visiting a museum. For those who love art it is simply the perfect gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST LIKE A MINI VACATION, October 16, 2014
We are certainly enjoying this diffuser. Turning it on and immediately being surrounded by a relaxing aroma (our current favorite is Jasmine)is a real treat. Do believe I enjoy it a bit more than the Mr. as I can close my eyes and imagine we're in some exotic spot, far away from dishes, vacuuming, and garbage disposals that won't grind!

You can adjust the degree of aroma you want by gauging the amount of oil put in. The diffuser spreads the scent efficiently and humidifies.

We're looking forward to trying other fragrances, and think it will be especially comforting and soothing during the winter months.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN APPLE A DAY....., October 16, 2014
It's tempting to ask where have you been all my life? But folks look askance at those who talk to apple corers. Nonetheless, it would be an honest question as this is the first apple corer I've used. Years of cutting and slicing with a paring knife have resulted in unevenly cut fruit not to mention a few finger nicks. So, this corer is a bit of magic for me.

The blades are extra sharp and the handles are perfection allowing me to firmly hold the slicer while keeping fingers away from harm. I will say that family and friends have eaten and said they enjoyed my apple pies, but everyone certainly took notice of the beautifully sliced fruit.

I've also used it on Delicious Apples, which are a favorite snack and again perfect slices.

It washes easily in our dishwasher.

We've never been disappointed in a Culina product, and certainly not this one!

Disclosure: Apple slicer provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars TASTY AND NUTRITIOUS - YES, MOM, IT'S TRUE!, October 16, 2014
Anyone else have a loving Mom who often insisted you eat or drink something really blagh because it was good for you? At our house the norm seemed to be that if something was really tasty it couldn't be good for you - she would not have believed these Vega One Chocolate Coconut Cashew bars, but I do!

They are truly delicious - how could one possibly go wrong with the ingredients just mentioned? And, as I have to keep reminding myself one is not a snack but a meal. I made the mistake of giving in to temptation the other day and had one in mid-afternoon - our 5:30 dinner was largely ignored by me.

It's a real treat to find a "grab and go" bar that that is plant-based, only 270 calories and covers your nutritional bases. Yes, Mom, it's true!

Sterling Silver Twist Medallion Pendant Necklace, 18"
Sterling Silver Twist Medallion Pendant Necklace, 18"
Price: $28.66

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVELY AND VERSATILE, October 16, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Cannot say enough good things about this Sterling Silver Pendant necklace. First of all, it arrives not only gift boxed but also in a drawstring velveteen bag. Perfect for gift giving, but I'm not giving mine away!

As you can see the design blends easily with something very mod or traditional. While the 18" chain is nice to have my preference is for a shorter necklace so happy to say the hole is large enough for me to thread a slim black velvet ribbon through it (which I love to do for dressy occasions) or I have a slim braided leather neck piece that slips easily through the hole that entirely changes the appearance of the necklace. With the leather the necklace is perfect to wear with jeans or more casual clothes.

There is simply no end to the ways you can wear this necklace whether it be on its own silver chain or any number of ribbons. Don't believe I have another piece of jewelry that offers so many options!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTY AND THE BARBECUE, October 14, 2014
I know, the words beauty and barbecue sound like a contradiction in terms, but in the case of this barbecue set it is an apt description.

The carrying case is stunning and the implements included are of the finest stainless steel. Great looking with handles perfect for a man yet not so heavy that a woman couldn't handle them easily.

How Culina can offer this set at such a reasonable price I do not know. It would make a very welcome wedding or holiday gift (if you could bear to part with it). This is not the first Culina item to find a home at our house and we've never been disappointed - always top quality and reasonably priced.

Highly recommended!

Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh
Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh
by John Lahr
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $25.27
49 used & new from $24.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A STELLAR BIOGRAPHY, October 13, 2014
Tennessee Williams once said, "I have lived intimately with the outcast and derelict and the desperate. I have tried to make a record of their lives because my own has fitted me to do so." Reading this authoritative biography of one of our most brilliant playwrights one realizes the truth of these words. We see his painful childhood created by a mean, tyrannical father, a puritanical mother who sought acquiescence from all, and a mentally ill sister in his stories, poems and plays - The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

Many words have been written about Williams but surely none as kind or as perceptive as those of John Lahr. The author of 17 books and the New Yorker's senior drama critic for 20 years Lahr offers not only intimate details of the playwright's life but access to his mind as found in diaries, letters, memoirs, interviews, theater history and unpublished manuscripts. It is not easy reading as we learn of the fear, self-doubt and paranoia that tormented Williams, eventually driving him to addictions to alcohol and narcotics.

Missives from Williams's long-time agent, Audrey Wood are especially riveting as are descriptions of his collaboration with film director Elia Kazan. Quite simply this is a stellar biography shedding new light on the life and work of a great playwright.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL CLOTH - EASY CARE, October 10, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The cloth is really much prettier than pictured - the color is a warm, rich wine, which blends beautifully with dishes and crystal. When using candles on the table the color of the cloth is reflected in the crystal glasses - lovely and festive.

Not only all of the above but it can easily be folded in half for a smaller table or, believe it or not, folded again for a small dinner for two.

Of course, it's perfect for holiday occasions but also good for everyday use as it washes like a dream - comes out of the dryer without a wrinkle. One doesn't have to worry about young ones spilling. In fact I'll be sure to tell all it's very kid friendly.

It'll be on out table come Thanksgiving and Christmas as our good China is white with a gold trim.

5.0 out of 5 stars STRONG STUFF, October 10, 2014
This is one of those things that you didn't know how you ever got along without. In other words, this is my first roll of Gaffer Tape and certainly not my last. Sad to remember all the tapes I've used in the past for do-it-yourself projects and then spent twice as much time trying to clean off the sticky residue that was left once those tapes were removed. Not a bit of this with this tape - peels off in a jif with no telltale sticky stuff or marks.

And, it is incredibly strong. By unrolling perhaps two inches and then folding under a bit so it adheres to a wall the kids can put up their posters with no fear of damaging paint or wall cover.

After several dunkings of a name taped onto a bottle we've also found it to be completely waterproof. There are also some wires around my desk that frequently have gone astray thanks to inquisitive kitties. No more - the tape holds them firmly in place and even the most determined felines cannot get to them.

Welcome to my world, Gaffer Tape!

Silent Murders: A Mystery (A Roaring Twenties Mystery)
Silent Murders: A Mystery (A Roaring Twenties Mystery)

5.0 out of 5 stars THOROUGHLY ENTERTAINING, October 9, 2014
Entertaining, unlikely and unputdownable - Mary Miley's next after The Impersonator (2013) finds our heroine taking on a new persona - she is now Jessie Beckett, a former vaudevillian who has found her way to Hollywood, the Hollywood of 1925 that is. By dint of good luck she lands a terrific job as temporary assistant to screen legend Douglas Fairbanks who is married to another screen legend, Mary Pickford.

As if that weren't enough good fortune she's invited to a posh party hosted by Director Bruno Heilmann. Along with her best friend, the naive but beautiful Myrna Williams the two are ready for a really big night. It is that in more ways than one. Jessie meets one of the maids hired for the evening, Esther Frankel, who turns out to have known her mother in the old days of vaudeville. Esther invites Jessie to come to her apartment to see some playbills that feature Jessie's mother. When Jessie arrives at Esther's apartment the next morning she's shocked to find Esther dead, bludgeoned to death. To make the day even grimmer she finds out that Bruno Heilmann was also dead -slain after his party.

To muddy waters even further Lottie, Mary Pickford's sister, had been having an affair with him. Fearing she will be suspected of killing Heilmann Fairbanks dispatches Jessie to his house to retrieve some unmentionables Lottie may have left behind. Of course, the house is now a crime scene under police guard. Does that stop our Jessie? Not at all.

The body count mounts, Jessie is interrogated by a handsome young policeman, and a rather shady fellow who had once set Jessie's heart aflutter shows up. As Jessie tries to connect the dots of these murders she comes very close to being a victim herself.

Suspend belief for all the high jinks involved and enjoy the ride. Mary Miley adds exciting new notes to the Jazz Age in Hollywood.
