Just an Absolutely Incredible Story ....,
March 26, 2012
This book is an extremely well written and well researched account of the life of young Colton Harris-Moore, more popularly known as the "Barefoot Bandit". The author actually was living in the area where most of the events occurred and vividly describes the reactions of the people impacted by the "Barefoot Bandit" and the combined and mostly futile efforts of a number of law enforcement agencies and private citizens to capture him.
This is one of those hard to put down books that connects on a couple of levels. First, it is a true but nearly unbelievable adventure story that made national headlines. In addition, it points out the tragedy of young talented kids stuck in dysfunctional family situations that are in desperate need of public awareness and assistance
Most of all, this is just a fascinating read. It almost defies belief how an 18 year old boy could learn to fly (and steal) airplanes without ever having had a formal flying lesson. On top of that, he singlehandedly confounded his pursuers and became a folk hero of sorts in the process. All in all, just great entertainment!
Be sure to also check out the author's web site as it features detailed maps of the affected areas off the coast of the State of Washington as well as those on Colton's cross country trek en route to the Bahamas. In addition, there are a number pictures of Colton's airplane and boat "Rides".
