5.0 out of 5 stars a little piece (peace) of john, September 27, 2012

WOW. Another birthday present from Yoko, via Hunter Davies. John's handwritten letters, reproduced with his little cartoons and all, transcribed with plenty of context. Something old, but which is new for all of John's many fans worldwide. All you need is this book as you remember John on his birthday October 9th. Don't hesitate - this is beautiful (and essential for collectors).

2.0 out of 5 stars below average lennon bio, September 5, 2012

This review is from: Orbit: John Lennon (Paperback)
The art in this comic book is OK, but it's basically just tracings of famous photographs. The writing is run of the mill biography - nothing new here for even the most casual fan. The main problems, IMHO, are the fact that the biographical material is bookended with ridiculous images of Lennon's afterlife as he floats around and makes music "in Heaven", looking like his 1969 self and nothing like he did in 1980. When depicting the events of December 8, 1980, it mentions Lennon's killer by name multiple times, contributing to giving him the infamy that he craves - something the survivng Beatles, Yoko and most of Lennon's fans have been against since the killer's motives for the shooting became known. Don't give the "jerk of all jerks" anymore attention! Sorry I purchased this - look elsewhere for your Lennon fix. In fact, why not just play some of his music instead?

4.0 out of 5 stars Why black and white?, August 29, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Love AMERICAN ELF, but disappointed this latest volume is in black and white. The 1st volume and the first strips were B&W, but volumes 2 and 3 were in color, just as the strips appear on James Kolchaka's website [...]. All the strips in Volume 4 are also available in color there, but this collected volume regresses back to the black and white presentation. The content is great as usual - just feeling shortchanged, especially now that we fans are used to seeing the daily strips in color and the previous two volumes presented them in color. (For example, the July 18, 2008 strip was "drawn with black raspberry juice" and is shown in purple on the website, but in this collected volume, it is just grey, defeating the whole purpose of the panel.) With that being said, I hope AMERICAN ELF continues for many more years.

5.0 out of 5 stars get the original version cheaper, October 10, 2010
Search "The PLAYBOY Interviews w/ John Lennon and Yoko Ono" by David Sheff - it's the same exact book (minus the new foreward) and it's selling for a lot less!
