5.0 out of 5 stars This book rips every excuse out of your hands..., February 1, 2013
Two ordinary moms with an extraordinary capacity to face an unspeakable reality offer up themselves as humble and accessible examples of how you and I (and our children and grandchildren) can take small but significant steps to end an evil in the world. This book should be read in groups, prayed over in quiet moments and discussed in churches and amongst friends.

One question changed their lives and should rattle ours: "What will your response be?"

4.0 out of 5 stars A biblical scholar gets liturgical on us...for good., December 3, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Mark D. Roberts is known for his biblical reflections, commentaries and a daily devotional that is read by tens of thousands around the world. He is an evangelical firmly out of the bible-teaching tradition that a generation ago would have written off Advent as being way too "Catholic." But through his own personal reflection, humility and allowing the church that he pastored to help him grow in his own spiritual life, Mark discovered the deep wisdom of the historical church and it's liturgical life.

Here, in this brief introduction, Mark helps the wary protestant (or better yet, the way-too-consumeristic-Christian-Christmas-Celebrator) to find wisdom that makes both the holidays and life more simple, more spiritual and more sane.

This is a little book to treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensible tool for ministry leaders, September 9, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As a pastor with 20 years experience in the church and a seminary professor in practical theology, I know of no other resource that is so immediately and practically accessible for coaching ministers through the toughest aspects of our calling. It captures succinctly and deftly so many of the issues surrounding pastoral conflict (and beyond conflict to change-leadership, too). I am having my entire pastoral staff read it, my wife who is a therapist with minister clients is reading it and it is being passed along to other colleagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest book I have ever read!, November 25, 2007
This review is from: Byzantium (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book a little while ago when I really needed a book that I could read for fun. Following some advice from a good friend of mine, I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. Although the book starts slowly, it picks up pace gradually and by the end, I was holding my breath. Absolutely a book worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blogger's Breadth, A Scholar's Depth and a Pastor's Heart in One Important Book, June 23, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
With the scholarly skills honed by earning a PhD from Harvard, and the connection to thousands of readers each day in his award-winning blog, Mark Roberts is uniquely qualified to address the issues that are currently being batted about the airwaves and bestseller lists questioning the credibility of the New Testament Gospels. But what makes this book most helpful (besides its pithy brevity!) is that Dr. Roberts writes for the pew and the pub more than the academy. This book is written for the lay reader who is interested in more than attention grabbing sound bites, but doesn't have the time to master the original languages (like Roberts has.) He also writes in a style that address biblical critics questions without (thankfully!) resorting to ridicule and hype. It is a model of good, edifying scholarship that is useful in the real world.

Roberts reinforces the confidence that a Christian can rightly have when reading the accounts of the life of Jesus and he dispels a number of long-discredited criticisms that have been making a comeback. An excellent resource for pastors who want to equip their members with facts, straightforward analysis and helpful illustrations for truly trusting the biblical gospels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A skillful musician with soul beyond the music, December 29, 2001
This review is from: Pondering the Sushi (Audio CD)
Norm's combination of bass licks, accessible music and delightful surprises will hook even non-bass junkies. Don't miss the liner notes. They tell you that there is more to this man than music.
A must get.
