Big con: These bend way too easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars How this generation of students is and is not being taught to think, February 7, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have read many, many books and articles about the history and dangers of Common Core, and I have participated in opposing it with other grassroots parents, though my children have completed their undergraduate educations. (If you don't think that there is a conspiracy going on concerning Common Core, go attend education committee meetings and floor votes in your state legislature in which this issue is discussed.) Terrance Moore has some brilliant insights about what is wrong with the ELA standards of Common Core and with how they are taught and about what students today are missing. He has some quotable insights that resonate with what I have been observing (although I could never state them as well as he does): "The difference between our time and the time of those inventions [indoor plumbing and the automobile] is that a century ago most sensible people did not want to throw away two-and-a-half millennia of liberal education just because they could have running water or get from place to place faster. It has been the hubris, not the virtue, of the present age to believe that we have nothing to learn from our intellectual fathers and mothers. It has been the innovation of our age to think that quick information can replace permanent knowledge. It is our arrogance that contends, against the example of Newton (no mean intellect he), that we are no longer dwarves resting on the shoulders of giants, but rather giants standing on the graves of dwarves: racist, sexist, and probably homophobic dwarves who somehow stumbled into liberty and greatness.Yet when we look at the alleged intellectuals of today--including the acclaimed new authors whose works appear in the Common Core--they appear so, so small." And another quote stood out: "A liberal education, as its name implies, is designed to teach young people how to be free. Throughout most of human history only a few people could afford to have this kind of education. It has been the glory of this country to try to give every citizen at least some portion of liberal learning. . . . Liberal education treats human being not as means but as ends. Liberal education, based upon the classics, does not promise merely to give future workers job skills so they can somehow squeeze into a name-your-century global economy. A liberal education teaches future husbands, wives, parents, citizens, friends, public servants, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and, yes, workers the language, mathematics, history, science, music, art, and stories they need to participate in a civil, common conversation about how to live together. A liberal education also recognizes a fundamental fact about the flourishing of a nation and an economy. Jobs do not make the human mind. The human mind makes jobs. . . . A liberal education speaks to the longing that compels human beings to want an education in the first place. Humans, unlike other living creatures, are not content just to live, They want to live well." (P.S. He has GREAT respect for Jane Austen! It's worth the price of the book just to read how he discusses Pride and Prejudice.) If you don't like those quotes, don't get the book. I myself couldn't put the book down except when absolutely necessary.

John MacArthur is a very careful biblical scholar who helped me think through some deep doctrinal issues concerning the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. He filters every question through the lens of Scripture in context!

Costly, but very good to prevent the elderly from slipping in their homes or in assisted living. Easy to cut to fit the shower. Highly recommended for loved ones after a stroke. The best bath mat I've ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great watch for the sight-impaired, January 24, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The face of the watch is big, but it has to be big to have big numerals for the sight-impaired. It tells the time without all the unnecessary digital extras found on many watches. I had to make the leather watchband smaller, but it was for someone with a tiny wrist.

5.0 out of 5 stars These heat to the perfect temperature, January 24, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This five stars is conditional; that means it works for me as advertised. It does not mean it's super-easy to deal with, but it does mean these things work. I have a very elderly relative with severe shoulder pain due to having no cartilage left in the shoulder joint, which, despite strong medication and steroid shots in the shoulder, plagues her night and day. I currently have about 12 of these Body Comfort pads. Each one gives her 2 hours of relief at a time. She is is assisted living, so I did not want her to have an electric heating pad with the risk of creating a fire hazard. And she cannot safely operate a microwave herself to use the microwaveable pads. And the assisted living staff is really too overworked for her to get them to microwave a microwaveable pad on a regular basis. But she CAN activate one of the Body Comfort pads all by herself, wrap one around her shoulder, and get 2 hours of pain relief; the heat is JUST RIGHT--not too hot to burn her; and she can get a better night's sleep. Yes, I have to take them home and boil them, wrapped in a towel, in my stockpot. That's why I bought a lot. She keeps a bunch in a bag by her chair at assisted living, and she puts the used ones where I can retrieve them to take them home and re-set them by boiling, So yes, they are a little trouble to re-set, but they safely ease her pain, and it's worth every penny and every minute of boiling. If you read bad reviews, I have a hunch that a lot of folks have not boiled them as stated in the instructions.
