Thoroughly enjoyable book especially for people who enjoy Christian authors. I love to read worthwhile books - this is one of them. After reading a few other books by this author, I wanted to know more about him - within these pages, he discusses his life journey, marriage, education, etc. and his tips on using words to influence and encourage others are excellent. He writes in a folksy and friendly way.

A beautifully written book from 1894 that you will want to read from beginning to end. After viewing pictures of Iceland, I checked out Amazon for some books on this fascinating country and chose this one. PERFECT CHOICE! I read it all night and highly recommend this book (free on Kindle) for the serious and curious reader who especially enjoys armchair traveling; plus discussing the history of Iceland - volcanoes, geysers, scenery makes for good conversation. What a difference a hundred years can make -- now I want to know about present day Iceland. Love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK - COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN, September 1, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My travel these days is limited to non-fiction travelogues and this book kept me up all night - so refreshingly interesting! My grandson embarked on a ten day excursion to Peru with his Spanish class in high school. Naturally, Granma was keenly interested, especially in their planned visit on the train to Machu Picchu about which I had heard so much. He had a wonderful time and upon his return this July, I was able to converse intelligently with him as he happily described all the places I'd just read about in this amazing book. Good writing, great research, and a wonderful time hiking in the jungles and learning the history of Peru and of the discovery of Machu Picchu. Thanks Mark Adams. And thanks for including a lot more to Peru's history than just Machu Picchu.

4.0 out of 5 stars PRESIDENT CARTER'S AMAZING JOURNEY THRU LIFE THIS FAR, July 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Jimmy Carter has led a full life and, in my opinion, this is his best memoir, reflecting on his life at ninety years of age. Tho I have not always agreed with him, and did not vote for him, I have read some of his books and have admired the Carter Center and all the good work he has done after his presidency in many parts of the world. He served only a 4 year term as President and was wounded by losing the next election but he moved on and must be respected for his good works. I even read his long diary in which he penned his thoughts daily over those four years (as well as the diaries of other presidents that were published).

In this book he tells us much more about his navy experience and education in nuclear submarines. Because he has opened up his thoughts and concerns about our nation and the world, learning from his short presidency, this book is worth reading. Everyone's life is a work in progress and Jimmy Carter continues to learn and share his life. Obviously, It is important to him that people remember him as a faithful Christian man who delights in simple pleasures (like fishing and hunting) and who wanted to become famous, not just as a peanut farmer or agricultural expert, but as president of our country in order to do great things and make a difference in the world. For some people he is a great man -- for others, a man who is mostly ignored. For me, he is an interesting man who writes well, keeps busy building homes for Habitat, employs many at the Carter Center, and really continues to make a difference. This book should be read by those who enjoy presidential memoirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A HELPFUL BOOK FOR ALL AGES TO ENJOY, July 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This author never fails to publish an insightful well-written book for every age. I particularly love this one for practical advice from the book of Proverbs. This is a good book to share or give - I call it a "pick up book" - meaning you can pick it up and read a little anytime, anywhere, and receive a bit of wisdom and enlightenment to make your day. His observations are right on as he explores the grand verses, helping us understand truths he has gleaned from them after years of study and writing about books of the Bible and other topics. I refer to this book often.

5.0 out of 5 stars A DELIGHTFUL MEMOIR FROM GREAT BRITAIN, July 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a wonderful book about life in domestic service in the thirties in England for the British royals. Flo Wadlow is a person you cannot help but love. She happily learned to cook and sew "beneath the stairs" working her way up,, even cooking a special dish for a visit of Queen Mary to Blickling Hall in 1938. She met famous people and was employed by famous people in England (the upper crust!) She cooked and served large quantities of food under difficult conditions without a discouraging word - amazing! She was born in 1912 and this story is all about her life working in kitchens across England before and after two wars, the times of plenty and the times of great need - Flo's life is so interesting you won't put this book down and you may want to try some of her recipes. Her book was published in 2007, first in Great Britain. I absolutely enjoyed every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars MEET QUEEN MARY AND THE ROYALS, July 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As an American who occasionally enjoys reading British "Royalty" books, I decided to brush up on Queen Mary and discover her place in history. This is a good book to begin with and it was enjoyable. Americans generally find it almost unbelievable the way royals live and their air of self-importance. Queen Mary is an interesting character and I enjoyed reading about her life and the events in England which took place before, during, and after her reign.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FIVE STAR BOOK FOR SERIOUS READERS, July 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: German Girl? (Kindle Edition)
This is a memoir never to be forgotten. Self-published by a woman who wanted the world to know the struggles of good Germans and Jews living under Hitler. Her memories are clear, her writing is excellent, and the book transports readers to another time and place we can only vaguely imagine now and one we must never ever forget. This book is included in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, in Washington, D.C. I recommend it for serious readers of memoirs both for the excellence in writing and for the story of heartbreak told so eloquently. Her journey finally to America and her new life, plus questions about her past from her family, made her decide to write her memories of her youth, for them. You will definitely want to read this amazing book of survival.
