1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother, April 9, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After reading the other one star reviews, I guess I'm lucky this thing didn't blow up in my face or melt anything, plus I got a whole 14 months of use out of it before it died--just sort of acted like it got really tired and shut off--so, winning...? Seriously, don't buy this, it's garbage.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh, October 25, 2012
I gave this book a solid "meh" as my rating, because it's better than having nothing at all to read.

The good...It's interesting to read about the logistical aspects to functioning in the White House (which I assume are accurate, or close to, given the author's credentials); it's a mercifully fast and very, very fluffy read (i.e. you can skim pages and be just fine, rather than wasting your time reading every line); and if you're into romance, there's at least something resembling romantic entanglements present in this book.

The bad...The characters lack any sort of depth or likeablity; the implausibility of the story balloons and eventually explodes by the final chapters of the book (case in point--and I hate to say it, being a female--a completely female presidential ticket running against a female challenger...there is NO way in real life that the males running this country would let that happen, sorry, there's just not); the writing, itself, is difficult to follow, everything from who the hell all the ancillary characters are to the timeline of events. The latter flaw can be overcome if you just sit down and plow through the book in large chunks or all at once, because you eventually get used to having to figure out where you are in the story and who's doing what; but if you were to read this book in smaller doses, I'm not sure how you could stay "in" the story. A final thought: why title the book "Eighteen Acres"? It's very misleading, because ultimately, this story really isn't about the White House at all.

All of this criticism aside, I have to hand it to Ms. Wallace, she had the cojones to try her hand at fiction, which is a pretty big risk for someone in her line of work. Perhaps, with a little practice, her future endeavors will be more readable.
