3.0 out of 5 stars Tough reading..., February 29, 2008
I bought this book simply because there are very few books (in fact, just one that I know "Supply Chain Excellence" by Bolstorff & Rosenbaum) that deals with the application of the SCOR model. I was disappointed for two reasons; firstly, I find it hard to read, probably because it represents a translated version from its original text in German. Choice of words in usage could have been better. Secondly, this is not a book about application. It is actually a scientific study into the model through a compilation of 80 sets of hypotheses based on the model's Level 1 metrics that is gained through an empirical set of data. Let me give you an example: In Delivery performance and fill rate, he postulates a thesis where A high on-time delivery percentage leads to a high customer retention rate. An analysis between the two is done to see if a correlation exist. So using statistical techniques and evaluations, the author attempts to test if the model can be considered to be "suitable and correct" to be used in an operational context. He then suggests possible ways to improve the model. As a SCOR Model practitioner and implementor, this work merely confirms what we practitioners already know and believe in the first place - that the SCOR Level 1 performance measures (within a performance attribute, and across attributes) conforms to one another.

I do not recommend this book to those unfamiliar with the SCOR Model. You will also need to be familiar with advanced statistical evaluation techniques to get through the meat of this work. The scientific format and structure of the book will probably appeal to those academically or research inclined. I will keep the book only for the 72 pages of Chapter 4 that contains the statistical comparisons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reality Check - People and Process, May 12, 2006
Never before has the subject of S&OP been presented in a novel-like style that highlights the people issues involved in a cross-funtional implementation. The authors did well to present real issues in bringing about what they refer to as "organized common sense" within the context of a hypothetical company with players comprising almost every function in an enterprise. This book provides insight into real challenges and issues in implementing S&OP. If you are looking for a 'How To' book, best you look at other literatures on the subject that deals with the details. This one gives you the 'whys' and 'why nots' of S&OP ... ideal primer for executive management.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best SCM Literature EVER!!, April 17, 2005
Finally, a book that explains supply chain strategy WITHOUT THE HYPE AND BUZZ WORDS!! The authors were right...this book should've been written years ago coz it will definitely enlighten those trying to unravel the intricacies in crafting a supply chain strategy. This book emphasizes the vital link between business objectives and supply chain strategy. The 5 core principles and its practical applications are discussed opposite real life examples of world class companies like Eli Lilly, Autoliv and the DoD, "the largest supply chain in the world." The frequent reference to the SCOR Model in the book only emphasize the power of the model in crafting and executing the 5 core principles the authors talk about. DON'T LEAVE FOR THE OFFICE WITHOUT THIS!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide!, April 17, 2005
While the SCOR Model has achieved some level of maturity, there has been few or no literature on its implementation practices....until now!! This book provides practical insights using a hypothetical company and provides you with a no-nonsense approach to implementing a BPR project using the SCOR model. Although the authors have included a suggested timeline, do use that only as a guide because if you are really considering implementing SCOR, you will definitely need to buffer in more time than recommended. What I find most useful is the authors' emphasis on gaining support within the organization and the teaming roles that is so critical to project success. This book is highly recommended for those looking for a proven path to implementing SCOR. Some of the tools suggested will require prior knowledge e.g. fishbone analysis, brainstorming, etc. These are powerful tools for problem solving so if you are not familiar with them, it pays to read additional literature on these great quality probem solving tools.

For those familiar with the SCOR model, you'll be amazed at the level of detail and depth the authors have devoted to the AS IS and TO BE process and information analysis. It makes the very high level SCOR Project Roadmap outlined by the Supply Chain Council look like a pre-school book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Reading..., June 14, 2000
This is heavy reading (but then again which book on costing isn't?). However it contain heaps of very useful and relevant approaches to the very elusive and difficult field of supply chain costing. What you find missing in other books on supply chain management is here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, June 14, 2000
This is a great book...for all the reasons mentioned in all reviews you find here. I especially love the accompanying CD containing the Beer Game and the Risk Pooling Game - both excellent at illustrating most of the problems explained in the book

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Primer!, June 13, 2000
This is one of the best, yet concise work that I have seen. SCM is like art...many terms and interpretations exist. It's not about moving stuff but a strategy. Therein lies the strength of this book.
It starts with a fundamental look at value and value drivers and how they relate to business strategy down the supply chain. The beginning chapter also introduces a valuable schematic representation of strategic options that drives value through the transformational process. Each transformational option is examined in detail subsequently chapter by chapter.
Each chapter in turn is peppered with cases covering a broad industry segment to illustrate each transformational option.
Overall, it's an excellent practical primer for the practitioner looking for stepping stones to transform the supply chain. Don't expect to find all the answers. However you can be assured that this book will open you up to a host of new ideas and change your thinking in the process. It did mine!
It's very welcomed reading and a great departure from the many books on SCM many of which tends to lean more towards the theoretical.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not For Practitioners, June 13, 2000
This book is suitable reading for someone reading a course on purchasing. For practitioners looking for real insights into value purchasing, best give this a miss as there are not very much information that is already known.

3.0 out of 5 stars Glorious Gloria, April 18, 2000
What can I say except that Gloria is just fabulous in this concert and a real DIVA! However the sound mix is bad and doesn't do justice at all. It's a waste as the band's great.
