5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, readable archaeology book, December 23, 2007
I just finished reading "Ten Discoveries that Rewrote History", by Patrick Hunt. This is a terrific book that is very readable yet provides great insight into some of the most important archaeological discoveries of all times (e.g., Rosetta Stone, Troy, Nineveh Library, King Tut's Tomb, Machu Picchu, Pompeii, Dead Sea Scrolls, Thera/Santorini/Atlantis, Olduvai Gorge, and the Terra Cotta Warriors in China). Besides giving the basics on the digs and their history, Prof. Hunt provides hard to find information on the people involved as well as the importance of the digs to archaeology and society. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes whereby he describes his own personal experiences (e.g., becoming an "amauta" (high priest) by playing his flute at Machu Picchu). This book will appeal to history buffs as well as to travelers going to the areas described, and I think it should be required reading for all college students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A look into Byzantine astronomy., November 27, 2002
This translation of an important Byzantine document, first uncovered by the great astronomy historian Otto Neugebauer from Vatican sources, gives us insight into the contributions made by Byzantine astronomers to cosmological theory. It produces evidence that in addition to preserving the ideas of Ptolemy and Islamic contribitors such as al-Tusi, the Byzantines added their own modifications to this corpus. The authors of this translation and commentary suggest that the original document made its way to Italy and may even have influenced Copernicus, who spoke Greek and traveled in Italy. Although this book is somewhat technical with its formulae and epicycles, the more casual reader can skim through these and still get the point. Also, the side-by-side photos of the original text and illustrations with clear schematics next to them, and the translations of their content, will appeal to the more visually-oriented reader. It is exciting to see an original 13th Century document opened up before one's eyes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and beautiful, December 27, 2000
This review is from: A Day Without Rain (Audio CD)
A Day Without Rain, Enya's newest album, is a heavenly piece by an artist who is at the top of her form. The songs are uniformly strong and generally deal with sensitive perceptions of time and place and insightful commentaries of people and relationships. Although some other reviews complain about a certain sameness to Enya's sound, she does what she does, and no one does it better. I was disappointed that the album was so short, maninly because I wanted more. Nevetheless, there is a certainly unity to the mood and content, leaving me a bit hungry but satiated. And the lyrics--FABULOUS. After listening to the songs alone a couple of times, I sat down and read the lyrics with the songs, and their poetic nature made the songs truly soar. I liked "Wild Child", "Only Time", and Flora's Secret", but for me the ending trilogy of "Pilgrim", (especially) "One by One", and "Lazy Days" alone made the album worth buying. A great listen if you want to mellow out from a tough day or want to reflect on love and life!
