5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous photos, January 29, 2013
I remember viewing this book as a child. I was fascinated by the many photos from the 19th century, especially the civil war. The book is a comprehensive introduction to the life of America. I still find it enjoyable to page through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent information, October 22, 2012

The Bear: History of a Fallen King includes many interesting facts about past cultures' view and treatment of bears. I was fascinated enough by the information to start researching the history of the bear in art, literature, and culture beliefs. I found the writing style/translation a bit frustrating, though. The author is quite repetitive and insists on the use of long series in those repetitions. It reminds me of a student attempting to pad the length of an essay. Nonetheless, the topic is compelling. The notes and bibliography are excellent. Well worth the read.

Five stars for content, dropped to 4 for writing style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous little gem--HARDBACK, July 19, 2011

Amazon has lumped the hardback and paperback together. THEY ARE DIFFERENT!!!

I just received my hardback copy of Champfleury's Les Chats. Most important to note that the hardback appears to be a different publication than the paperback. Different publishers, different # pages and, most notably, the paperback description reads like an extensive disclaimer about the quality of scanning or some sort of copying.

The hardback, in contrast, is a complete version and is beautifully printed and formatted. I adore this tiny gem of a book. Not only is the text fascinating (in French), but the illustrations are beautiful. I had wanted this book for years, but the original publications are very rare and cost thousands of dollars. I am so thrilled that this modern edition has become available. I highly recommend this book. Publisher is Editions du chêne, 2009.

Genoa is the backdrop for this beautiful, quiet film of family members dealing with the loss of a mother. The two daughters react in radically different ways to their tragedy, while the father attempts to hold things together. There is an undercurrent of darkness and danger as the older daughter finds new friends and experiences and the younger one grieves through visions of her mother. Slow, gentle unfolding of a family trying to find its way.

You will come to love George and worry about what happens to him. Colin Firth makes George absolutely real. Goode, Moore, and Hoult are fantastic too. I cannot remember when I have enjoyed a movie more. A must see, as must own. (The book is compelling too.)

Well, this is not Colin's best. It is dangerously close to a thrown-together Hollywood hills soft core film. It is rare to see him play nasty. (He plays two characters actually, so his nastiness turns out not to be his real self.) There's some mystery, some twists and turns, some skin. The other actors are wooden, plot is thin.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Month in the Country, September 15, 2008

This is the story of a young World War I veteran who spends a summer restoring a medieval fresco in an English church. Healing of his wounds, both physical and spiritual, occurs as he focuses on the mystery of the fresco's painter and his new friendship with another young vet who is performing some archeological work for the church elders and dealing with problems of his own. This is a quiet, gentle, moving film. The English countryside is beautiful, and the supporting characters are described with insight and warmth. And, of course, Firth and Branagh are excellent.

This is a cute little movie. An opportunity to see some actors when they were just starting--Colin Firth, Timothy Spall, James Wilby, Adrian Lukis. The boys from a Scottish public school take a trip to the Netherlands and try to get lucky, with little success. Love the very graceful last scene.

It is like a Woody Allen wannabe movie, but enjoyable. Loved the London settings, found some of the scenes with a counselor very amusing. Firth is as enjoyable as ever, even with a weak script to work with.
