5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic., May 11, 2009
It is really hard to duplicate Om Kalthoum. I love the Cairo Orchestra and they do a fantastic job with her music. I'm usually very critical of anyone who tries to perform her songs either musically or dancing. Fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this for our 3rd baby, May 7, 2009
I splurged on this for our third baby because I was bored with our old baby stuff. I have no idea why I didn't request this in 2005 when we had our first child; Jumperoos were around then.

It is by far the best baby item I have ever owned. My six-month-old can actually stay in it happy and giggling for up to an hour.

A must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic music with some tribal derivations, May 7, 2009
This review is from: Tribal Derivations (MP3 Music)
If you are a classical belly dancer (or if you prefer traditional dance) who is interested in a modern edge but not into anything completely freakish or gothic, this is for you. I love it.

The artistry, the talent, and thought of the dancer is evident in this music. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Free blacks of the 17th century, February 2, 2009
Very readable historical narrative. Clears up a very large misconception: that whites automatically thought blacks were inferior and thus enslaved them.

Only people with enough resources to obtain property were allowed an active and coveted role in Virginia society. Many blacks that had obtained freedom on Virginia's Eastern Shore attained this stature - their rights protected and upheld by the court justices, white children placed in their custody, were called to testify against whites in trials, conducted substantial business with great white planters, and so forth. Without anyone considering it taboo.

Virginia's society was initially based more on class and Englishness than race. Joe the white indentured servant and John the black indentured servant were treated the same way by their masters. As all of their indentures were up, there was a growing class of relatively united black and white freemen who were not part of the upper-class English gentry.

Herein lies the problem. After Bacon's Rebellion, the gentry created sharp racial lines within the poor class and thus weaked the unity in the lower class. Racism was created -- it was not automatic. The main points of this book are to encourage the reader to see the origins of racism in a different light and to tell the awesome story of free blacks on the Eastern Shore in the 17th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - and not necessarily for beginners, January 18, 2009
This dance/workout is not necessarily for beginners. While the instruction aspect of the video may be for beginners, an intermediate dancer can turn on the music-only option and just dance. Most of the moves are pretty slow, but effective nonetheless. The slower and more controlled the move, the more tone I get.

Sarah's shimmies are fantastic, Blanca is very sensual, and Neon knows how to make her moves pop. Good job ladies.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite Mack!, December 26, 2008
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
Apparently this was released during the last holiday season; I don't know how I missed that. Mack is my son's absolute favorite character and we have anything "Mack."

This building set does not disappoint. My son is 3-1/2 and after I showed him one time, he could put Mack together by himself and even hunt for the right pieces among the other two Megabloks Cars sets which are all in the same bin.

Once assembled, McQueen and Mack are both sturdy enough for normal play. It is obvious that Megabloks worked hard to design and produce these Cars sets to be as authentic as possible.

Highly recommended -- if you know a Mack enthusiast, don't think twice to get this, it is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different ways to build!, December 26, 2008
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
I would like to start my review by saying that it's obvious that the CARS Megablocks sets were carefully designed, planned, and executed to be of the better quality and of the most fun toys on the market as of late.

Mater, McQueen, and Luigi are included. Also, some other cute features: the stoplight, stacks of "tires," cacti, shop doors - just like you see in Radiator Springs. Many more cute things, depending on how you build it. The set put together as it is pictured on the front of the box is actually quite lame, but there are two other building ideas on the back of the box that are MUCH better. I can't imagine why the one on the front of the box was chosen above the other two.

My 3-1/2 year old can basically put this whole set together by himself, and my 2-year-old also enjoys learning how from his big brother and playing with the cars once they are put together. The cars themselves are quite sturdy for normal play.

Megablocks has really gone through a lot of trouble to make these sets look as authentic as they can -- no generic feel whatsoever. Unlike any other blocks set. A must-have for any little Cars enthusiast you know of!

I think it should be noted that these Megabloks are more like big Legos (hard plastic), not the soft plastic I'm used to from the bigger, more generic Megabloks. I also recommend the Megabloks Mack & McQueen and the Dinoco Stage (comes with the Dinoco helicopter).

3.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced., December 25, 2008
This set comes with an Einstein figurine, the pyramid, a camel?, and a "magnifying" glass. There are 4 scrambled images on the pyramid and viewing them through the magnifying glass reveals the image. There is also a "trap door" (operated by the Sphinx head) that the figure can go in and out of. I'm not sure why they included the camel other than for stereotype, the Einstein doesn't even sit on it -- but you'd think a Little Einsteins toy would have only relevant and clever pieces included.

It's cute, but the plastic is cheap, you don't get much, and it is way overpriced. This toy should only be selling at about 7.99-8.99 (just my opinion).

5.0 out of 5 stars Toddler/Preschooler FUN!, December 25, 2008
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This puzzle is excellent. There are nine "doors" which have a likeness of an object that holds things:

-barn (holds a cow)
-lunch box (holds a magnet with an image of a thermos, sandwich, and an apple)
-present (holds a teddy bear)
-cookie jar (holds chocolate chip cookies)
-garage (holds a car that looks like a Mini Cooper)
-oven (holds a turkey in a roasting pan)
-dog house (holds a dog)
-covered bird cage (holds a parrot)
-treasure chest (holds a magnet with an image of a crown, goblet, jewels, and gold coins)

The child is supposed to match the object to which "door" is goes into.

Bottom line:
Best pro - the pieces inside the "doors" are magnetic so if the puzzle gets knocked over, they won't go all over the place and make a mess.
Con - the hinges are cheap brass, and it quality of them don't live up to the Melissa & Doug name. But this is not something that would have kept me from buying this puzzle. It's great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Geometry Projects, December 21, 2008
If you love symmetry, you'll love Geometry and The Geometer's Sketchpad. Once you get the hang of using this program, it is the absolute best learning tool for the subject of Geometry. You can construct any segment, line, ray, circle, angle, triangle, rhombus, square, etc., measure angles or arcs, or have the program find bisectors. Many more functions as well. Everything is neatly displayed for printing. Made very tidy-looking projects.
