5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and thoughtful., August 8, 2007

This review is from: Elephant (HBO) (DVD)
This movie has stayed with me. It's very haunting, and somewhat disturbing in the end (this movie is not for everybody). This movie takes patience to watch, especially in the early scenes when it merely watches people; I love that. The later scenes inspire quiet contemplation. There are no easy explanations or "answers" to what happens; in real life, there never are. The overall effect is quietly powerful, and thoughtful.

Lifehouse are the only band I'll listen to without skipping any songs. And they've done it again. This is a great album! Songs like "Broken" and "Easier To Be" show Jason Wade's growth as a singer/songwriter, while "Storm" shows that he can still write a powerful song with a slow build that takes you on a journey. These guys just get better and better!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ah, nostalgia!, August 8, 2007

This is not my favorite Elton John album, but I like it a lot better than "Peachtree Road." The more I listen to it, the more I appreciate it. And anyone who loves the original "Captain Fantastic" album will thrill to hear the opening to the song "The Captain & The Kid." This album is not a masterpiece, but it's definitely worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mychael Danna scores again., August 8, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Breach (Audio CD)
For anyone who loved Mychael Danna's score to Billy Ray's "Shattered Glass," "Breach" is a must-have to add to your collection. It's a generally somber score (and movie), but don't let that stop you from enjoying a fine score from a good film composer. Mychael Danna is becoming one of those "composers to watch."

Bridge to Terabithia (Movie Tie-in)

5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic!, August 8, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I absolutely love the movie, but I didn't read the novel until later. It works in different ways, but it's excellent! The movie develops certain story threads more than the book, and I love the changes, but it's fairly faithful to the original, which is still a moving story. It's easy to see why this book has become such a perennial favorite among readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice companion to the movie and the novel., August 8, 2007

This book was fun to read, and it was interesting to learn how David Paterson himself was the inspiration for Jess in the book. It's not quite as in-depth as I hoped it would be (it's not even very thick), but if you love the movie it's fun to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good score from Thomas Newman., November 6, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cinderella Man (Audio CD)
Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only a new approach for movies, but for making-of books., November 6, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is just fun to look at. The artwork is sprawling (I can't believe how much artwork is created for movies; how fast are these artists working?), and the descriptions of how the movies was made are informative. This has quickly become one of my favorite movies, and this book makes it fun to see the evolution of its creation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good collection of John Williams music., November 6, 2006

These piano versions of pieces from the score are fun to play, without being over-simplified. (My only regret is that I haven't found a version for cello and piano, as played by John Williams and Yo-Yo Ma.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes justice comes at a high price., July 3, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of Steven Spielberg's best films, but also one of the hardest to watch. It's extremely tough and challenging, confronting deep issues, and asking questions that inevitably must be answered. In light of the massacre at the Olympic games in Munich, who's to say how a nation should react? This movie is haunting, with excellent music, acting and cinematography. The violence is pretty graphic; this movie is not for everyone. But for those who will watch it, it's unforgettable.
