5.0 out of 5 stars Superb historical drama, August 27, 2013
This review is from: Rome: Season 1 (DVD)
HBO proved once gain that it brings quality to television programming with the Rome series. Ray Stevenson is brilliant and the rest of the cast follows suit. The story is engrossing and the production values are excellent. I highly recomment this and the second season of Rome.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Chandler adaptation, August 23, 2013
This review is from: Philip Marlowe: Private Eye (DVD)
I love Raymond chandler's writings. This HBO series is below par, however. Powers Boothe tries too hard to be cool byu underacting. The acting in general is stagey and the pacing is slow. It is acceptable entertainment, but could hve been much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful pop harmonies, August 16, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Civil Wars (Audio CD)
This is the best album I have heard in years. The harmony between the two members of The Civil Wars is probably the finest I have ever heard. The irony of these love songs is that The Civil Wars duo had a rift and have not even spoken in almost a year. This may be their second and last album. That would be a terrible shame. Buy this album and play it to death as I have!

3.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired, slow-moving and predictable, August 16, 2013
This review is from: Game of Thrones: Season 1 (DVD)
Game of Thrones is acceptable entertainment, but below the usual HBO standard. It will never be confused with the excellent Lord of the Rings movies, for example. My biggest complaint is that the pacing of the show is so slow. Coupled with rather wooden acting by most of the cast, it can be very annoying. If only the other actors had fed off the enthusiasm and energy that the dwarf noble put into his performance! I like Sean Bean, but he plays his role like Liam Neeson on downers. The characters seem better suited to a Dickens novel than a fantasy series in my opinion--very extreme characterizations. The productio9n values are excellent and add to the viewing experience. If you watch this series with reasonable expectations, you will be entertained. I had much higher hopes for it, though.

Luck: Season 1

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb series that deserved better, August 15, 2013
This review is from: Luck: Season 1 (DVD)
Luck is one of my all-time favorite series. It is a shame it had an early demise. The acting, writing, cinematography and race track realism were incredible. I downgrade the series only for the music, which was sometimes intrusive and inappropropriate. For horse racing fans and non-racing fans alike, it was brilliant television!

Kevin Bacon can do more than just act He and his brother Michael are talented muicians. Jesey Girl, from their second album, is a catchy, romantic take on a great song writte by Tom Waits. It is worth buying the Geting Thre album just for this song!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Coffee Table Chess Book, June 29, 2013

I have avidly collected chss books for many years. Only Anthony Saidy's World of Chess is a more impressive lavishly illustrated book about chess. Anyone interested in chess should own both of the two excellent volumes. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Batman takes charge, June 9, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Justice League: Doom (DVD)
I really enjoyed this movie with the original JLA (Barry Allen, Hal Jordan). Batman puts the other members of JLA in their place and proves his vastly superior intellect in so doing. I don't want to spoil it for you, so I won't disclose anything else about the plot. I did deduct one star for the intrusive, stupid and lame chanting and accompanying music. I expected to see an incarnaation of the devil to pop up on the screen. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, June 9, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a mixed review. On the one hand, the price is good and the kimono style sleeves allow for ease in cooking and eating. On the other hand, the sizing is not true and it is not really a "lightweight" robe. Order one size larger than you would normally. And be aware that this robe may be a bit warm for wearing in the warmer months. The navy blue color is attractive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talented brothers never fail to entertain, June 8, 2013
The Bacon Brothers are one of the most underrated musical acts in the world. Every song they write and sing is filled with true heart and soul. My only regret is that the terrific song Jersey Girl is not included on this album. Highly recommended.
