5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful dancers and dancing!, June 24, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I recommend this DVD for all ballet lovers! The dancers are some of the best dancers around at the moment...two of the ballerinas have danced in the Bay Area recently (2008/9)and were sensational. The ballets are pas-de-deux and show cases for technique and style...and the beauty of the dancers (they are all lovely to look at!)

The photography is crisp and clear, the 'behind the scenes' camera work is informative and the Prague Opera House looks gorgeous. This DVD is well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Divine Olga!, May 2, 2009
This review is from: Olga Borodina - Arias (Audio CD)
This CD of arias sung by Olga Borodina is beautiful. Olga Borodina is one of the great voices of your time. She has a magnificent mezzo voice, rich, velvety, flexible with gorgeous high notes. No CD can do justice to an opera singer and this CD does not really do justice to Olga's great voice, however it is a sample. The best track is her singing of Berlioz' "D'amour l'ardente flamme" - this shows off her voice very well...deep emotion, expansive sound, flexibility and soaring high notes.
The least successful track is Purcell...Olga is not a Baroque singer!

There are many more CD of Olga Borodina to listen to and enjoy...so go ahead, buy one, and revel in the sound of a great mezzo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Berlioz!, May 2, 2009
"The Damnation of Faust" by Berlioz is the most wonderful music and this cast is superb. "Damnation" is not an opera but rather a symphonic piece of music with many wonderful operatic scene and arias. This music is usually performed in a symphony concert format, but recently had an excellent stage production at the Metropolitan Opera.

If you are not familiar with this music you are in for a treat! If you are familiar with Marguarite's famous aria "D'amour l'ardente flamme" you will love Janet Baker's singing. She has a sweet, true mezzo voice but without the deep passion and complexity of a mezzo such as Olga Borodina.

I have become addicted to this recording and usually listen to it every day!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Verdi !, December 16, 2008
I think this opera must be Verdi's most musical and emotional music...I just love it! I have seen a stage production and instantly loved the music and then I bought this CD. The wonderful arias are full of melody, emotion and drama....I love the short overture, a wistful musical entry into the world of great singing. This CD is a live performance and the audience applause is a great release from some emotional arias.

The opera 'Simon Boccanegra' has the reputation of a comlex story and being hard to follow...not so. The story is one of the most interesting and real stories you will find on the opera stage.

Buy a CD of 'Simon Boccanegra', listen to it often and let the music swirl around you...you will love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars NYCD & Balanchine, December 16, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This DVD is an insight into a world class ballet company, NYCB, preparing to perform in the Marinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. There is a buzz of excitement as the dancers rehearse and travel to Russia. The interviews with dancers and staff members is illuminating....and of course the dancing if superb! The comments from audience members is a nice touch.

I recommend this DVD for any ballet enthusiast especially those who love Balanchine. I just wish the DVD had been a bit longer!

The 'special features' is a series of short interviews, it is a bit repetitive but still a nice extra touch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Talkative Violette and Mr.B!, October 23, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Violette et Mister B (DVD)
I love the details and coaching that go into dancing ballet therefore I enjoyed this DVD.....however Violette loves to talk! The first half of the DVD is Violette talking in rapid French to dancers while they dance a little (don't worry there are English sub-titles). The second half of the DVD has a lot more ballet and less talk.
This DVD is a good addition for someone who love Balanchine's ballet - as I do. Violette gives insights into the steps and motivations behind the steps. Also the 'grainy' videos of Violette dancing the ballets herself are wonderful......what a beautiful dancer Violette was.....not many dancers have her grace and fluidity....there is much more anxiety about technique in many of today's ballet dancers.

5.0 out of 5 stars ease your back pain, May 25, 2008
I recommend a 'tush cush' for everyone....not just people with lower back pain or tail bone pain. Everyone's spine is special and deserves to be treated kindly.....this cushion takes the pressure off the spine and almost immediately relieves pain. I have many of these cushions, one in my car, my TV chair, my dining room chair, and one that I carry to the theatre and always on a plane. The cushion in my car can be carried into restaurants if the seats are hard wooden chairs.
Everyone should protect their spine and tail bone....buy some of these cushions!

5.0 out of 5 stars Borodina the Great !, May 25, 2008
This review is from: Portrait (Audio CD)
Olga Borodina is one of the great voices of the present time. Her mezzo is rich, rounded, flexible and soaring....gorgeous! She sings some wonderful arias on this CD and I recommend it to all her fans and to others wanting to hear a great mezzo soprano. I have heard her many times on the opera stage and she is a superb actress as well as a wonderful singer. CD's can never replicate the sound of a voice from the opera stage, but this CD is about as good as you can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Balanchine, May 12, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This DVD of the Paris Opera Ballet's production of Balanchine's "Jewels" is excellent. This full length ballet (with no story!) is a display of gorgeous dancing and beautiful dancers. "Jewels" is one of my favorite ballets and this is one of the best productions that I have seen, and I have seen this ballet performed by 3 different ballet companies.

One of the highlights is that the costume design is new, but this might not be noticable for a first time viewer. A slight criticism would be the backdrops.....they are not terribly imaginative! My favorite sections are Emeralds (the green act) and Diamonds (the white act) although most people would say that their favorite is "Rubies" (the red act) and "Rubies" is performed the most by various ballet companies as a stand-alone ballet.

I recommend this DVD for all ballet lovers. However a beginner ballet-lover might miss the 'swans' and 'princesses' !!

The opening scenes of the magnificent lobby of the Paris Opera House is enough to make one jump on a plane and be there in person.
