5.0 out of 5 stars Images to fore, June 19, 2013

This is not about holotropic breathing per se but rather about the terrain one might transverse in various manners as recorded in the artistic vision of various peoples. 5 stars for the illustrations alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mountain Lovers Alert, June 19, 2013
I heard Tom Reed speak about his previous book on the mountains of Patagonia. That book and this one communicate his deep engagement with the natural world in general but, more specifically, the way mountains move our soul. If you love mountains, Alaska, and/or the unsullied natural world this is a great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars War of the Gods, May 11, 2013
I probably can't post a link but if you search ShrinkWrapRadio for the author, there's an excellent interview. Reacting to a comment already posted here, Schoen isn't any more of a 12 century monk than Jung was. (Which doesn't necessarily there's nothing of the 12 century monk about Jung; I, also, claim 25+ years of reading Jung and related writers.) Here's a quotation from Schoen in that interview:

"Well, what I'm getting at is that there's an archetypal level to
addiction that's pretty much not been looked at before. It's been viewed in terms of
ego and dynamics and impulse control and obsessive compulsive - that kind of thing
- but what I'm positing is that there's an element in every true addiction that has the
ability to kill you, O.K? And that it's impersonal - and the counter to that, of the
neutralizing factor to that, seems to be like the higher power in AA. Now whether
you believe in the higher power or not, basically that there are forces that are beyond
the individual involved in addiction and in its cure and so there's literally a war going
on, on the archetypal level, in terms of these factors. So that's what I was alluding to
with the war of the gods - that these powers are way beyond the human and they are
both destructive and healing, positive - both directions."

That's very much Carl Jung, imho. It's important to note that "way beyond human" is more precisely "way beyond the idiosyncratic" and doesn't refer to some supernatural entities. This I think is where the author lends himself to misinterpretation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Problem with the Kindle edition, June 9, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a lot of familiarity with SharePoint building sites in a browser. I bought this book to learn more about site structure and SP Designer. It seems pretty good actually.

BUT! there's no excuse to sell a book with tables and illustrations as blurry as these are. Some are impossible to read whether on the small kindle, the big kindle, or your PC! Not too small (although there's really no effective way to get them much bigger) but too few pixels to be readable blurry. Did anyone actually test this at the publishers before dumping it out here? If you're contemplating getting this, be sure and get the sample and see if it's workable for you before you buy. I understand that there may be limits on file size and therefore for dpi but broken is broken.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book pretty good, Kindle images pretty bad, May 15, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The other reviews seem to give a pretty good overview. I've a few points to add--

1) This book was written as SharePoint 2010 was coming out so it is more about the general way to approach SharePoint site design and not so much about war stories from the front.

2) The images are so low resolution on the Kindle that they range from eye strain to illegible. This is because much on SharePoint sites is text intensive and the font is small...particularly the administrative and setup screens. I tried it on my small Kindle, big Kindle, and PC. No luck. Magnification doesn't help: the pixels are blurred at any resolution. This is particularly a problem in the WalkThrough parts because those are image intensive. A blurred picture of a thousand words is worth considerable less than a thousand words. If I needed this aspect of the book in particular, I would rate it a 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Monopoly, December 12, 2004
This deserves its Game of the Year award at this year's Spiele. I think it's the best intro to the "European" or "Family Strategy" board game category since Settlers of Catan. It's less complex than Monopoly, takes less than an hour to play generally, and teaches a little geography to boot. Like most games in the category it does not suffer from the 'behind the eight ball' syndrome and become boring if you're losing. Players usually are running neck and neck up until the final moves.

If you're a gamer and haven't checked out some of the great new board games that have appeared over the last decade, this is a perfect introduction.
