2.0 out of 5 stars Knife shaped metal, February 15, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Well, these certainly are metal cut into the rough shape of a knife. They're not remotely sharp (the sides on two of the knives were flat), nor is the steel of sufficient quality to take an edge of any use for cutting. Even the tip was fairly dull, and I can hardly imagine them being of much use for throwing into anything but gelatin.

But these most certainly are metal cut into the rough shape of a knife. Luckily, I bought them for a film, where that's precisely what I needed. But if you're buying them to cut or throw, don't.

1.0 out of 5 stars Written by Bart Kosko, for Bart Kosko, November 5, 2013
This review is from: Noise (Kindle Edition)
This is a "mass-market" book on science written by somebody who shouldn't be writing mass market books on science. Kosko clearly knows his field well, and is doubtless great a signal processing. But, reading the book, he doesn't seem to know what other people know.

His "explanations" of complex subjects are often heavily mathematical, and many of them hinge on knowledge of related concepts. He doesn't particularly explain things, but instead makes brief references which should suffice to remind those who learned about the concept in their signal processing classes. I get the strong feeling that the book was written from a series of lectures that the author gave at some point to an audience with a much higher amount of shared knowledge.

I finished the book, and learned about some interesting general ideas, but I wouldn't recommend it, because there were far too many instances of the author "explaining" a concept insufficiently, then discussing higher level intricacies of it for 3-4 pages. So, I spent much of the book idly flipping pages past the advanced material, as no effort was made to lower the intricacies to my knowledge level, nor to raise me up to meet it.

It's a shame, because the author clearly has interesting things to say about the topics here. But Mr. Kosko has either forgotten how much he knows, misjudged his audience, or simply written a book for himself. And as a result, this book isn't for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Do the job, but not without leaks, July 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
They're small bottles with a pointy tip, and work well in that regard. But don't expect them to keep their contents if tipped over, or even if you squeeze too hard, as they leak from the lid's screw-on base. Would've preferred three quality bottles to six of these.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice backup plan, July 7, 2013

It's 3am. The brakes of the RV have only recently been extinguished following an extended mountain drive (with an inexperienced driver at the helm). The generator won't start, you're pulled over off some odd culvert in California with no outlets in sight, and your iPhone is at 13%, iPad 4 at 30% after using it as a map for 500 miles or so. You plug both into your little Anker battery pack (thinking "Hey, can't hurt to give them a little boost before they die") and pass out sprawled across the front seats.

You wake up 4 hours later. You go to check your phone, and realize it's fully charged. Your iPad too. And your Anker is still showing half a charge. You plug it into one of the few free 12volt adapters during the day's drive to get it back to 100%, and do the same thing again the next night.

In short, this little guy worked when I needed it to, over and over again, and it's now earned a place in my everyday carry for travel. Love it, and a great deal at that price.

2.0 out of 5 stars ER finally discharges the shark, April 22, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ER: Season 12 (DVD)
I loved ER, and until Dr. Green left the show, this was among my favorite series. It's been limping a little from Season 8 to 12, but this is the season that ER flatlined.

I won't give anything away, but they've gone from interesting characters with interesting interactions and medicines to randomly assigning tragedies to characters to try and squeeze drama out of an otherwise uninteresting cast.

*Roll Roll Roll* Cancer for Dr. X!
*Roll Roll Roll* Death for Dr. Y!
*Roll Roll Roll* Crazy Family/Ex for Dr. Z!
*Roll Roll Roll* AFRICA!

You get the impression that the writers have just run out of ideas and are now flailing about and trying to keep things from utter monotony.

I'm going to finish the series, but at this point, I feel like all I'm doing is intubating a vegetable. Yeah, it'll go on for a few more seasons, but should it really?

5.0 out of 5 stars A big-a** battery for your phone, April 22, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is exactly what it sounds like: a freaking huge battery for the GS3. It holds all kinds of juice, enough to play a whole afternoon worth of Ingress, and isn't so ugly on the phone.

That said, my unit did have some fit-and-finish issues with the phone, it never quite sat properly in one corner. Caveat emptor.

This system works incredibly well, and everything in my house is now sharp. With the ultra-fine stones (separate purchase), I can get my S30V pocketknife shaving-sharp, and the system is easier to use than Smiths and Lansky sets i've tried before. Love it, love it, love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Odd, but wonderful!, April 22, 2013

Pook is my favorite vocal composer, and this album is just wonderful. I don't know how I'd even characterize her work, it's something like Eric Whitacre with Loreena McKennit's worldview and a side of Alkan-esque complexity. One of the strangest albums I know, but one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it _so_ much, April 22, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is my favorite pen ever. It's convenient, modern, nice looking, and writes wonderfully. Only complaint is the pilot-specific cartridges and the anemic converter. Do yourself a favor and buy one of the squeeze-converters from Pilot, they're much higher capacity.

Still, excellent purchase!
