1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Acted Potboiler, March 15, 2007
This review is from: Band of Angels (DVD)
I cannot believe that the above positive reviewers have ever seen this movie. The late Yvonne DeCarlo was never known as a dramatic actress. In comedy she could hold her own and she was a remarkable singer, but this role was way beyond her abilities. And poor Clark Gable, trying desparately to recreate Rhett Butler when he was way past his prime. Only an unknown Sidney Poitier had any inkling of the depth of this material. Even the overblown "Raintree County" is superior to this Hollywood dredging up of a Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel.

It is ridiculous to think that someone thought this film deserved to be on DVD. Where's "Summer and Smoke"? Where's "Boom!"? Where's "Hurry Sundown"?

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, uninspired, miscast "Hamlet", October 17, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love "Hamlet"--that is, all except Kenneth Brannagh's version which is ponderously directed and embarassingly cast with box office draws of the day like a fumbling Jack Lemmon, a heavily accented Gerard Deparidieu and a seriously lost Billy Crystal. Ye gods, I walked out of the movie theatre during the Ghost's story. I rented the video when it first came out, hoping that my initial response had been wrong. But again I couldn't watch the whole thing. I tried to watch Charleton Heston as the Player King and all I could hear was Cecil B. DeMille!

In the leads, Brannagh is too thin-lipped and Pilsbury-dough-boyish to play the Dane, as are the unintentionally funny Julie Christie and Derek Jacobi, too plump and docile for Gertrude and Claudius. Only the always remarkable Kate Winslet is able to transcend this boorish production.

Those that love this version don't realize that the Elizabethan actors spoke their lines incredibly fast in front of an Elizabethan audience who were used their speed-of-light-delivery. The tempo of this Hamlet is dirge-like from beginning to end. Ho-hum...

So, if you're wondering why this version hasn't been transferred to DVD re-read this review and be glad. Check out the Russian Hamlet and even Mel Gibson's take has greater passion.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very slight entertainment, June 22, 2006
This review is from: Casanova (DVD)
I had read reviews that stated this movie to be not half-bad. Well, take the half off, because this "Casanova" is simply stupid. Heath Ledger doesn't know what to do with this watered-down part and the leading lady whose name I do not want to remember gives a stilted and lackluster performance, if you can even call it that.

One reviewer said that the script had some help from Tom Stoppard, but I don't believe it for one minute. And the cinematography is so bad that it makes the real Venice look like a cardboard set.

$29.00! This DVD isn't worth 29 cents!

Try and find a copy of Felini's Casanova. It's long overdue to be on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A triumphant epic trailblazer, April 12, 2006
This review is from: Things To Come (DVD-R)
One of the first and finest sci-fi films with remarkable special effects for and time. "Things to Come" is a mesmerizing classic of the British Cinema with two stand-out performances from a towering Raymond Massey and an ineffable Ralph Richardson. No sci-fi DVD library is complete without it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the film soundtrack, March 3, 2006

This is rather a labored effort. Anthony Newley is not well-cast. The extra songs are nothing else but extra and take away from the story.

1.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment, March 3, 2006

I don't know what the hoopla was all about; however, I didn't get to see the Broadway show. I thought they might have done something exciting with the piece, but it is very generic and old hat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb musical score, March 3, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One of the great lost scores of the 1960's, "The Roar of the Greasepaint-The Smell of the Crowd" is brimmed full with unforgettable songs. The performances are top-notch from Anthony Newley, Cyril Ritchard and the rest of youthful cast. On the CD the orchestrations have never sounded better. A must for your Broadway collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!, February 10, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Julia (DVD)
One of the last great films of that remarkable era of film-making--the 1970's--"Julia" stands the test of time as a testament to heroism in drastic times of collusion much like our own. We know the bad guys but think we are too weak to stop them--to make a difference--but the story of "Julia" gives us strength to at least try. I was about to say the films of today do not have this power, but after experiencing the power of some of this year's extraordinary films like "Good Night, and Good Luck," "Brokeback Mountain" and "Syrianna" I find hope in the modern arena. Keep the faith.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for theatre collectors, January 31, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This version will not be as accessible to American audiences as the vinyl recording version released on Capitol Records in the 1960's. To the contemporary audience "Beyond the Fringe" will not seem as ground-breaking as it was in its time. Some of the most interesting footage for this theatre director was that of the audience's responses. There was a time when people actually dressed up to go to the theatre. You can't have everything, I guess, but you can have this DVD and dream.
