5.0 out of 5 stars 2 Houses For The Price Of One, March 4, 2002
This review is from: House (DVD)
This 2 DVD set includes House and House 2, two of the best genre movies of the 80's. House is a horror comedy while House 2 is a fantasy comedy. Together, they make a night of movie watching fun that you just can't beat easily.
Both contain a commentary track, and I have to disagree with the previous review that the House 2 commentary track is the weaker of the two. I found the House 2 commentary to be very informative, more so than the House commentary. The House DVD also has a short "making of" featurette that doesn't really satisfy, but hey, that they were able to dig this footage up at all is amazing for a New World picture.
Also included are two movie poster cards for both House and House 2, a nice touch by the fine folks of Anchor Bay. Finally, the transfers are beautiful, and the sound is clear. You just can't have a horror/genre DVD collection and not include these discs. But hurry, only the first pressing will have the bonus House 2 DVD.
Just a quick note. I was first impressed by Anchor Bay with their Stepford Wives release. The remastered transfer of that film was remarkable, and they continue to provide quality genre home video. They are the standard for genre film releases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun and A Fantastic Holiday Film, July 3, 2001
I would give this film 4 stars for the story, acting, and entertainment value, but I have to deduct 1 star for the costumes and cinematography. As this was a television production, I can overlook that however. The movie retells the legends that surround the memory of Ireland's patron saint. From Patrick escaping slavery to his driving out the snakes in Ireland, converting the island to Christianity, and taking on the Church hierarchy, the film does a great job in telling these legends with flair and pacing that keeps the modern audience's attention. A special acting nod goes to Malcolm McDowell as a scheming Church official that plots to bring about Patrick's downfall. If you've celebrated St. Patrick's Day and never knew who the man was, pick up this movie. It's a very entertaining education.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware Of Which Transfer of Charade You Buy, July 3, 2001
Charade has seen several different releases on DVD. Most of the releases use inferior masters. The only release that offers a clear picture and sound is the Criterion Collection release. The other releases are budget releases, and while watchable, are vastly inferior to the Criterion release. I do have one of the budget DVD's as the Criterion release is very expensive, and I enjoy the DVD, but I'm saving my pennies for the Criterion release for this one, or if the Criterion transfer is made available at a more reasonable price. Charade is a classic thriller/mystery with comedic touches that will leave you guesing to the end. Mancini's score is fantastic, and the chemistry between Grant and Hepburn is electric. This is one of Grant's finest on-screen moments. 5 stars for the movie and 2 stars for the budget transfer equal a total rating of 3.5.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Defense But Could Be Better Orgainzed, December 16, 2000
While the organization of Jesus Among Other Gods calls for more note taking than usual for a book of this type in order to link concepts, the defense Dr. Zacharias presents for the orthodox view of Christ is a solid one.
The easiest thing for a proponent of a divergent world view is to claim that the critic of that world view has quoted sources out of context. This has been the major critique on this book by the one star folks. To those adherents of the world views being critiqued by Zacharais, his argument, complete with quotes, would read as if out of context to them because the adherent's context is rooted in belief of the system and its doctrine while the critic has another context due to a conflicting world view. To merely say that something is "out of context" is not enough to defeat an argument.
When talking about a world view or belief system, using one illustration or one slice of doctrine to indentify that world view is simply inadequte. Zacharais does not do this in his book, and his critics should not do this in their reviews. In fact, Zacharias is careful not to use this formula. He shares his experience of growing up in a pluralistic society and how that society affected his early world view versus his current Christian world view which is antithetical to a pluralistic view.
Jesus Among Other Gods should not be an introduction to apologetics for the casual reader or searcher. I would recommend Josh McDowell's More Than A Carpenter or the youth edition of Jesus Among Other Gods for that. Jesus Among Other Gods is a great book for those that are more advanced in their search for Truth and seek to reconcile the mind with the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Topcial Bible Series, October 18, 2000
This may be the best video in the Topical Bible Series. Using footage from The Visual Bible, The Pharisees: The Debate Over Tradition explores the themes of legalism and tradition in matters of faith. This 45 minute segement of the Topical Bible Series is hosted by singer/songwriter Michael Card and features a music video by Card. There is an authentic ring to this program because Card is a Bible scholar and he comes across as a more autoratative host than the other hosts. Also, the topic is a timely one for Christians today. For those that do not have the finacial resources to afford The Visual Bible's Matthew or Acts, the Topical Bible series is a more affordable alternative. The complete Matthew and Acts is still prefered however. For this reason, I rate this video 4 out of 5. I would give it a 4.5 for Card's participation (and yes, I am a fan of Card's work), but there are no .5 options.

5.0 out of 5 stars The parent video collection for a superb line of videos, September 27, 2000
The Visual Bible's Matthew is a wonderful resource, well-made and entertaining as well as informative and inspiriational. The high price-tag may discourage some viewers, but fear not. There are two lines of videos (on VHS) which use footage from Matthew and The Visual Bible's Acts. One line is the Visual Bible For Kids. This series frames the awesome footage from The Visual Bible using stories set in the present to draw kids in and help them understand what they are seeing. Also, there is a line of videos called The Topical Bible Series which uses footage to explore such topics as The Passion and Healing. These videos are hosted by popular contemporary Christians artists. If your family or church can afford Matthew in its entirety however, it is well worth your money, especially on DVD. The DVD extras include the ability to listen to the soundtrack music of the film, biographies of the biblical characters in the film, searches by Chapter and Event (Jesus' birth, baptism etc.), a Spanish as well as English soundtrack (so you get Mateo and Matthew for the price of one) and English subtitles for the hearing impaired. This is video should be seen as the standard for all future multimedia presentations of the Bible. Also available is an audio book which features the music and dialogue from the film....

2.0 out of 5 stars Collage A Poor Sampling Of Indie Sixpence, July 18, 2000
It is much more advisable for new Sixpence listners to buy Sixpence's first two albums, THIS BEAUTIFUL MESS and THE FATHERLESS AND THE WIDOW than this hastily thrown together collection. Missing from this "portrait" are Sixpence classics like "Trust" and "Meaningless," a song the band still plays live at epic length. The artwork is second-rate and goes against the artistic nature of a band. Avoid COLLAGE unless you just can't afford both of Sixpence's early CD's. One positive thing I will mention about COLLAGE is that whoever selected the tracks for the album (and it was not the band) had the forsight to pick the best songs from the TICKETS FOR A PRAYER WHEEL EP It is still unforgivable that the same care was not taken in selecting LP tracks. It sounds as if the compilers of the album tried to find as many "Kiss Me" clones as they could in Sixpence's back catalog.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Research Yeilds Poor Results, October 19, 1998
Don't Know Much About The Bible is aptly titled, because the author obviously does not know a lot about the Bible. Kenneth C. Davis presents a series of complex Biblical issues and tries to distill them into neat little packages in one-sided arguments that can be explained away by any first year seminary student. Do not waste your time with this book if you are looking for an introduction to the Bible because you will only go away with a lot of misinformation. The argument that Jesus could not have been who He said He was because it was foretold that the Messiah would be from Bethelehem, and the author's assertion that since Jesus was from Nazareth, He couldn't have been the Messiah is a good example of faulty logic since Jesus was born in Bethlehem, thus making the prophesy relevent to Jesus. This is one example, and there are many others.
