5.0 out of 5 stars "summer had bleached the adults of their purpose.", September 30, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Each of these stories combines Mantel's trademark elegant turns of phrasing and her sly, bleak humor. Narrators regard the world with a jaundiced eye. Young or old, they have been jaded by the adults in their world whose incontinent views of right and wrong have skewed their perceptions.
Readers of "Wolf Hall" may be startled by the wry wit on display, but Mantel has written in this vein before: notably "Beyond Black".

My perverse favorite is "Comma" in which two marginally accepted children on the fringes of society watch a wealthy home for glimpses of a child with severe birth defects who appears to be a "comma". The physical metaphor is taken in a arc of brilliant writing until one of the girls come "full stop." All of these stories bear these twists, subtle and otherwise, of the observed judging those at the same margins as themselves. I would recommend this book not only to lovers of the short story, but any person fond of fine writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars My grandsons love to use it to collect toys to put away, September 28, 2014

This is an older basket, and it has a very handy form. My grandsons love to use it to collect toys to put away. It actually has a very utilitarian purpose and is handy for a variety of uses as an actual basket. Also lovely in design. Really love this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five year old fantasy fan, September 28, 2014
My grandson is not exactly clear on the Ninja Turtles. He isn't allowed to watch much tv and some of the story line is meant for an older child. doesn't keep him from loving them By extension, he loves the pajamas and enjoys getting his fantasy kick on two different ways. Did I mention he is a comfort freak. Like many little boys, he only want to wear what is comfortable. These are soft and fit ugly without binding. He is very happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars by the time she said good bye, her husband no longer saw her for ..., September 27, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
this must be one of the most visceral accounts of the meaning of being a soldier of war that I ever read. It is not long on bloody detail or of gore. Without hyperbole, this account renders the story of how a human being is turned into a soldier. While Ash is in fact a woman, the story is not really a story of feminism. Ash had gone to war instead of her husband because she was strong while he was not. One of them had to serve the Union, so she dressed as a man and left. But long before Ash wandered far from Ohio, she had left herself. In training and drilling for her new role, by the time she said good bye, her husband no longer saw her for herself.

Ash remembers the first man she killed in combat. Then little by little she only remembers a litany of orders, followed by her, and blurred to an inhuman machinery. The story of any soldier is whether home can exist again after the world has changed to a universe of killing. The lyrical prose and beautiful writing flows without a touch of flowery hyping. Each minute that she describes can be felt viscerally, and this makes this novel essential in the understanding of the way people come to declare a war and go off to kill.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Men by nature demand to know.", September 27, 2014
Aristotle gave much of his life to biology. He has broken with Plato to declare that there is value in the understanding of all living things. He leaves the study of ideal forms in philosophy to explore the reality of nature, "where there is nothing accidental." Leroi searches for his works in texts extant, in commentary of the age, and in exploration of the locations where certainly Aristotle searched for "truth".

Many of the books of Aristotle have been destroyed or are missing, but Leroi has based his work on an extant encyclopedia among Aristotle's work. While he celebrates all that Aristotle had found, he doesn't veer from discussing those areas in which Aristotle misses the mark. The prose is is entrancing in its obvious love of the topic at hand. Leroi has made this search a labor of love. The "known" animals of this world, reported back from travelers in the field, can be bizarre, but are illuminating nonetheless. The vignettes that set the scene of his study assure us that much is still the same from antiquity. The author assists us in our interpretation with his retrieval of modern understanding of the animal in question.

I find it exciting and humbling to view the research of a man so long before our time. He had excited the interest in the natural world simply by his insistence in its value and his courage to deviate from the norms of his age. This book has much to offer to those of us who find the learning of new things of highest order.

4.0 out of 5 stars We were waiting for forgiveness., September 25, 2014

This review is from: Rooms (Kindle Edition)
This is a lovely piece of prose. The premise is a lyrical story of souls that have come to inhabit the place of their deaths in replacement for a body. The newly bereaved family of the last owner of the house have come to assess the property, handle the estate and bury him. They are his divorced ex-wife, her two children, and her daughter's daughter. Each of them are fragile in their own way. It seems the younger the living person, the more attuned they are to the whispers of the dead, but each person has some perception of the living house.

I think that the reader's reaction to this work will depend highly on personal preference. Of course that is always the case, but particularly for me in this novel. The stories of the two reigning ghosts are confusing despite the clearly labeled chapters. The intertwining of the living and the dead becomes knotted through the story. One of the main plot devices is fairly artificial. All in all, the plot is not particularly well articulated. Yet I enjoyed the book for its prose and its evocative sense of the world of memory and time. Several passages are startling in their clarity of expressed longing that survives time and circumstance. The memories of the living and the dead are told in lovely terms, and this made the book one I really enjoyed reading. So being a fan of atmosphere and prose, I liked this book a lot. Those pursuing a strong plot line will probably be disappointed.

I think anyone who picks this book to consider already has some predilection to consider the fate of the person after death, and from this point of view, I recommend this book.

This mini version of the toy story dog is a wonderful idea. Unfortunately it is shoddy and fragile. They all broke almost immediately. The spring didn't expand at all. Very disappointing.

My little two year old has entered construction obsession. He is enamored of these little machines. They are tough and really the perfect size for his little hands. He is able to dig in the sandbox and set races in the living room. They have stood up to flying, crushing, and incredible burdens. Great toy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A snare for every season., September 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a huge hit with the toddler fraternity. Four grandsons get endless amusement with the snare claw that catches the car that loses the race. Of course, as toddlers, they use it to catch simply everything in sight. The snare has been up to the task. The little ones are too young to set up a race, but are expert at having a parent dance attendance on each match. Its a a good simple toy. No batteries, no screen, no sound effects: exactly as I like it.

Hate to say it but this is streaky and covers poorly. It chips easily. I have had good luck with this brand, but this bottle was a bust. I ended up tossing it.
