5.0 out of 5 stars A must for parents and counselors, February 16, 2003
This review is from: Where Is Grandpa? (Paperback)
Where's Grandpa? touches the heart of anyone who has ever suffered the loss of a loved one or tried to explain loss to a child. The family remembers the wonderful times they have had with Grandpa but the child still wonders, "But where, exactly is he now?" The illustrations are wonderful and compliment the story. This book shows a sensitive way of dealing with bereavement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read for Black History Month or Reading Month, March 18, 2002
This beautifully illustrated book follows the story of a young black boy who wants - more than anything else - to be able to read. He works with his father in the salt mines and listens at night to the wonder of the man in the camp who reads aloud from the newspaper to the others who cannot read it for themselves. The identity of the young boy is revealed on the last page. I use this book in the fall in a unit on the importance of reading. I follow with the challenge of avoiding TV and video games from Sunday through Friday. Quite a challenge today.

5.0 out of 5 stars diversity and tolerance, February 5, 2002
This review is from: Hooway for Wodney Wat (Hardcover)
Poor Wodney. Imagine being a Rat..a Rodent...named Rodney...and you can't pronounce your "r's". How many young children still remember struggling through those r's and w's? Add to the mix a bully who is not only a girl but dressed in pink ruffles. O.K., she's bigger, smarter, and meaner than any of the other rodents. Shy Rodney saves the day and the others learn to accept that people and rodents may have worth even if they are different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers, February 5, 2002
This review is from: Wolf! (Hardcover)
Wolf is a great story to read to emergent readers. It follows the Big Bad Wolf of fairy tale fame through his struggle to impress the educated animals of a nearby farm. His progress in learning fluency follows the steps that teachers track through their students' work. The kids love recognizing their own learning plateaus through watching the wolf become a beloved story teller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Start for the Year, September 19, 2000
Miss Alaineus is a really fun way to start off the year's vocabulary study. The story is clever and the illustrations done in the medium of children are very attention getting. I have loaned this book to other teachers who have enjoyed it with their classes. Especially suitable for teachers of the Talented and Gifted Classes who know so many students who are "too smart to need a dictionary". I plan to have a vocabulary parade as a culminating activity for one of my social studies units.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers on Earth Day., November 12, 1999
I am purchasing this video to use in my classroom to help introduce pollution and care for the earth and its creatures. While I concentrate this study to coordinate with Earth Day activities, it could be used at any level when an awareness of the environment is needed.
