2.0 out of 5 stars Should be better, August 24, 2015

This book should be better. I was so interested in reading a book based around ballroom dancing. Professional ballroom dancing has always intrigued me even though I have two left feet. The blurb said that the writing is reminiscent of Elizabeth Strout-I thought I would be delighted with this books but it really missed the mark with me.
First of all, the writing is not in any way reminiscent of Elizabeth Strout who is a brilliant writer. Alice Simpson tried to format the stories so they would be stories within a larger story but the problem is that none of the characters are likable or interesting. They all seem to be beaten down characters who are desperate for the companionship of dancing. But the relationships are twisted and unpleasant-who could relate to a character as despicable as Gabriel? And then there is Harry who has an unhealthy obsession with a teenage girl. My word, I found it hard to read.
The writing is above average but it needed to be lighter in some way. One of the characters needed to be redeemable in some way but even the women were not especially likable.
I cannot recommend this book unless you like to read dreary books with hopeless characters.

I love these books and was anxious to find out what was happening in the yarn shop by the sea. This is fun, authentic and well paced. You don't have to be a knitter to appreciate these books....a jolly good read!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fair read-interesting story line, August 9, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The main character in this story is Wally Baker, a young girl growing up in Brooklyn Heights during and after World War II. As with many families, her father is away in the war and as a result of shortages and rationing, there are many hardships in her life. Her grandparents and mother are all doctors but that leads to other complications that deeply affect her family.
I wanted to like this book more than I did. It is very well written and authentic but I would have liked more character development . There were times where I did not understand Wally. That can good to some extent but I was confounded at some parts where she has deep feelings that do not seem to spring from anything.
It is an interesting story line so the book did hold my interest but I just couldn't quite buy into the characters and their motivation. Also, the story is dark and sad for a story told through the eyes of a young girl...I wish is had been lighter in parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, June 8, 2015

Norah Vincent has written a beautiful novel that is based on Virginia Woolf's life. For me it was predictable because I know the ending. The beauty comes form the language used to describe Woolf's life. There was madness in her life and she and her husband battled the darkness for many years. Surrounded other members of the famous Bloomsbury Group their combined creative genius swirls through their lives causing some of them to be consumed.
I liked this book very much but it is not a "light" read. Vincent does a marvelous job of interlacing dialogue with narrative as she tells the story. Anyone interested in Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group would enjoy this fictional account based on their life and times.

I took this book with me on a trip to the beach for a family wedding. It was a wonderful, light story to enjoy while relaxing in the sun. Macomber works her magic with this story of three sisters who are estranged because of a family dispute. The sister who runs away is Cassie and she endures a teenage pregnancy and a marriage to an abusive man. When she is able to extract herself from the situation she works to rebuild her life and to protect her young daughter. During this time, her other two sisters and her parents have lived their lives without Cassie.
Cassie was rejected when she asked for help and the rejection caused her to draw back from her sisters. Then one day she receives a letter from one of her sisters and the path to reconciliation begins. The path twists and turns but eventually leads to a reunion and forgiveness.
Cassie is selected to be a recipient of a house through Habitat for Humanity. I liked the explanation of Habitat and their goals for helping people have a home. Very nice research on that.
The characters are developed well and Macomber handles the story line well. Her description of domestic violence and how it is handled within the justice system was even handed and appropriate. The reader is left with an understanding of abuse without being put off by the details...that is not easy to do. Macomber does not trivialize but she also does not exaggerate...I liked how she handled a difficult subject and used it appropriately within the story line.
Although it is a bit predictable it is still a good read and just in time for beach season!
Warning...by the end of the book you will have a craving for KFC!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good story..., May 7, 2015

I chose this book because it had an unusual storyline about a Stradivarius cello and the relationship between the owner and his daughter. The book starts with a view of her childhood and then skips to the reading of her father's will. What happens next is what makes the story work.
Mariana is the only child of Alexander and his wife and she has followed in her father's footsteps becoming an accomplished cellist. Personal choices end her professional career but she ends up as her father's caretaker as he ages. After his death she learns that she did not understand many areas of her father's life and his feelings about her change in career.
There are some twists in the storyline but I did suspect the "secret" long before it is revealed. Having said that, my enjoyment of the story was not tarnished.
The writing is clear and her characters are interesting. The author has a lot of personal knowledge of the subject and she used that to her advantage in telling the story without pretense.
I would recommend this book as a nice read that will leave you wondering about what would happen next. The sign of a good story...leave your readers wanting more!
