4.0 out of 5 stars Tough, April 8, 2013

This review is from: Donnybrook: A Novel (Paperback)
A book about tough if troubled people. Meth users, cigarette smokers whiskey guzzlers.

And violent oh so violent. It's a book of, for and by violence.

Many characters some better than others. Some of the lesser hard to remember.

Tightly, if not always interestingly written.

Get yourself ready for a tough reading time.

The shortcut man does it. Eventually he gets justice.
The end involves an engraved wedding ring. Prior to that are coffee, breasts and guns.
The writing us taught and thoughtful. The plot sings along all adding up to a pleasant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar, March 28, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book starts well and rolls enjoyably along. It has a strong main character with an intriguing plot.
There are parts that are funny, parts that hurt some that deceive. Enough of each.
Compactly written is the last fine quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depressing, March 26, 2013

What a depressing book for those of with hearing loss. She holds out little hope for help.

She handles her hearing loss mainly through denial and psychoanalysis. Not a great role model in my opinion.

Then despite the fact she is a NY Times reporter in the culture area she says Neil Young does acoustic music to help his hearing. So incorrect.

Essentially a mediocre combination of negativity, denial and incorrect facts.

Recently visited San Francisco. Some of the book is set in Washington square where there is a statue of Benjamin Franklin. Quite serendipitous I could read with fresh memory.

All in all the book is charming , trippy and fun.

While on a San Francisco vacation I looked for a Frisco set book. Settled on this book full of short chapters. My one word impression: dated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Telling, March 22, 2013

A telling story of current times. The executive who is anti immigrant but has illegals working for him. The yacht owner who doesn't need to see his crews quarters.

The boat yard and the owner come off as upper class mediocrities. The workers try hard but lack knowledge to achieve all they can.

Good read with some soft edges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fine, March 16, 2013

I started this story with low expectations. From the well written breakfast scene that starts it to the clever ending I was overwhelmed.

A neat main character that moves steadily revealing itself carefully it's a stellar read.

5.0 out of 5 stars New to me, March 12, 2013

The concept of planting trees after logging is a new one. Good fringy subject.

The author works extremely hard at planting trees without knowing if a hundred years from now if it will have succeeded.

She writes within a bounding yet focused tempo. The parts where she goes way into scientific history are not for me. Yet they make it more than just a journal of putting trees in the ground.

Whether traveling by barge or helicopter it's an interesting job and same for the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, March 11, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I live in the area where the book is set and the descriptions are accurate. The generally phlrgmatic characters are what you find way down east. The desire to live privately yet the help the community are spot on.

What hurts the book is the confusing story line. There are ghosts , dreams and flashbacks. You are never sure what the timing is.

So, good setting, decent writing, confusing plot is my summary.
