5.0 out of 5 stars Begley Is Superb, June 3, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Whitman is not my favorite poet by a stretch, but listening to Ed Begley Sr. recite it could change that over time. The excerpts are copious and well chosen; the excerpts from "A Song of Myself," intelligent. Begley's voice and delivery--warm, rich, never strained or histrionic--is a perfect match for the verse. Highly recommended.

This album, I believe, marked Woody Herman's triumphant return to Big Band jazz in the 70s. It won for him a Grammy. If you listen to it, you'll understand that it was no sentimental award but richly deserved on musical merit. Interesting melodies, beautifully arranged, by a Herd that knew how to cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars "He Used Our Guts For His Strings", June 3, 2009

So said "Psycho"'s screenwriter Joseph Stefano about this classic score, and it's great to have this vintage (if rare) recording, under the composer's own baton, available in CD. It includes every cue from the movie, including some Hitchcock and Herrmann decided not to use. Essential for collectors of vintage film scores and all things Hitch.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining If Uneven Album, June 3, 2009

I doubt I would introduce M. F. to newcomers with this album, but it's vintage jazz from the 70s that I'm delighted to hear remastered on CD. The group's take on McCartney's "Jet" is uninspired; the title track cooks as hot as that band ever did; and everything else fall somewhere in between. At its current low price (under $10), it's an especially happy bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Chet's Finest, June 3, 2009

Why Columbia lets titles like this go OP is beyond me. Chet and Jerry Reed make an awesome duo, and "Sneakin' Around" boasts a dozen great charts with no filler that I can hear. I own well over a dozen Atkins albums, and probably none contains as many tracks with so many pleasures as this one. If you can find this rarity at a reasonable price, spring for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only One New Deal-But Excellent, June 3, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New Deal (Audio CD)
After disbanding his popular Baja Marimba Band, master percussionist Julius Wechter teamed with Jules Greenberg to record this solo venture. Its watchword is straight-ahead jazz: cool, original, and occasionally virtuosic. The only disappointment is that this was the new Baja Marimbas' only effort. If you can find this rarity at a reasonable price, your jazz library will be the richer for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Practical Resource, June 3, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Baker's Method is reminiscent of Remington's classic Warm-Up Studies, which is still valuable but now very hard to find. Like Remington, Baker writes with the sensibility of a knowledgeable, patient, encouraging teacher. The beauty of Baker's book is its accessibility to trombonists at almost every stage in their maturity, from advanced beginner to professional. The book deals with only as much theory as is necessary to clarify practical points. This is a good thing: Practice books should be practical! The layout of Baker's method is very clear, and, as a sympathetic teacher, he abbreviates and expands his approach for the performer who has less or more time to devote in daily practice. Baker's most repeated points of guidance are two. First, the importance of air in beautiful blowing (which sounds ridiculously easy, but is lost on players who try and inevitably fail to compensate for lack of wind with excruciating embouchure). Second, Baker emphasizes relaxation and rest when they are needed--again, a profoundly simple point ignored by students who play more poorly by wearing themselves out. The book is illustrated with helpful photographs and diagrams that enrich the presentation, which is already very clear. A superb resource that I hope to use for many years.

Solid Cash, circa 1974. The title may mislead those unfamiliar with the disc that this is an album of patriotic tracks. It isn't. Instead it's a straight-ahead country album of lesser-known yet entertaining songs. Unbeatable at the (current) price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ordinary People, Extraordinary Passions, December 26, 2008

Hassler breathes fresh life into two of literature's weariest clichés: the lovers' triangle and the suffering of mortal illness. Because he handles these subjects with a lightness of touch and firm structural craftsmanship, the result is realistic yet never maudlin, insightful though not preachy. An honest read with delightfully quirky characters.
