The Lie at the Heart of Waterloo: The Battle's Hidden Last Half Hour
The Lie at the Heart of Waterloo: The Battle's Hidden Last Half Hour

4.0 out of 5 stars One for those with a serious interest in the turning point of the great battle., April 29, 2015

A fascinating book which takes a forensic look at the crucial turning point of the battle. This is a book for the committed enthusiast and historian, as it's extremely detailed and not for the casual reader. The anecdotes are there purely to support a particular event or fact, rather than colour the book. I felt he could loose readers on occasion by going into microscopic & lengthy detail on a particular point, but it is hard to strike the correct balance and that point will vary from reader to reader.

I did find some of the assumptions & opinions of what the Duke of Wellington's motives where or what he felt a bit laboured. There was a point the author wanted to make, and he was going to great lengths to promote that point. Again, he has to work with whatever evidence is available at 200 years, but I felt like a little too much was read into some of the Duke's actions.

However if you are an enthusiast of the battle, and want the real story of how the Imperial Guard where defeated as they attempted victory, this will give the reader a forensic and well researched story of what actually occurred, and how it was hidden, rather than the old popularised history of what took place. Scholarly.

This perspective is well overdue, and adds another dimension to the "Anglo-centric" understanding we have of the battle. Whilst occasionally a little cut & dried, I found the personal accounts of French soldiers and officers most enlightening. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in Waterloo who wants a fuller picture of what went on, rather than the old myths that seem to perpetuate in popular histories of the battle.

Gareth's clear & concise layout has gathered the German accounts together nicely. These German accounts are often more honest and open in their weaknesses than British accounts, and so make for a more true account of action on the field during the 100 days campaign. A "must have" for any Waterloo enthusiast as are the others in the series.

Fascinating book with an insider and very intimate view of Hitler's household. Misch very much comes across as a quite naÔve sort of soldier, which makes his memories all the more genuine. He does not appear to dress anything up, is not boastful, and as such his reflections appear to be quite genuine. He is quite honest about his own shortcomings and those around him.

Free of the ego of high ranked, often self serving memoirs, this is a fascinating look behind the myth that was Adolf Hitler.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous, honest & intelligently written account from the cradle to captivity, October 15, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A fabulous, honest & intelligently written account from the cradle to captivity. Very readable, and more than credible given it was basically written in the year after the war, without hindsight and straight from the fresh memories. Fascinating, informative and a must read for any student of German military history!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!, September 22, 2014

A fascinating and candid story of brutal fighting in the front line on the Eastern Front. If you are squeamish then the vivid descriptions of sniper kills and Russian atrocities might make this hard to read. It does not pull any punches, and is a "warts & all" description of this Austro/German soldier's life and times on the very front line. An excellent read!
