Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS
Price: $7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous, honest & intelligently written account from the cradle to captivity, October 15, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A fabulous, honest & intelligently written account from the cradle to captivity. Very readable, and more than credible given it was basically written in the year after the war, without hindsight and straight from the fresh memories. Fascinating, informative and a must read for any student of German military history!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!, September 22, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A fascinating and candid story of brutal fighting in the front line on the Eastern Front. If you are squeamish then the vivid descriptions of sniper kills and Russian atrocities might make this hard to read. It does not pull any punches, and is a "warts & all" description of this Austro/German soldier's life and times on the very front line. An excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful rare insight into membership of the elite Waffen SS Regiment Leibstandarte, September 13, 2014

A wonderful rare insight into membership of the elite Waffen SS Regiment Leibstandarte. Bartmann tells his story without ego and with a pleasant "story telling" skill. I highly recommend this fascinating insider view of an ordinary man's service on the eastern front.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, January 20, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A committed book by an author who has done his homework and is obviously very familiar with the subject. This shines a light into what was a darkened corner of WW2 and the art world. Nicely carried out, entertaining and a rewarding read, the facts are astounding. I especially recommend reading it before seeing the film, which naturally takes some license with the actual facts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating in the extreme, January 20, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Son of War (Kindle Edition)
Let me be the first to say, don't waste your money on buying this book. Why? Ok. From the outset it's obvious the author has a very large chip on his shoulder and an axe to grind. Buying the book helps him do that. You are buying into a massive b!tch session if you do.

His opinion of almost everyone else is extremely critical, whilst only paying lip service to any faults of his own. Everyone else is incompetent or fraudulent, whilst he struggles, heroically, against the odds, to set things straight. Baloney. He revels in the fact he got so many bad reports and had to fight to get them struck off. Of course again....it's a conspiracy and everyone is out to get him, because he's the only honest guy around. He displays narcissistic traits as well as paranoia. I note that after doing some research around the internet on various Special Forces type websites, that he has been banned, and appears to have few if any supporters....are ALL those guys wrong? are they ALL part of a grand conspiracy?

If he has any legitimate argument against several people being awarded medals falsely, then he is his own worst enemy writing about it the style he does. He repeats himself (often), he seems to rely comfortably on an NVA commander's report, whist doubting the reports of his own side. The layout of his argument is messy and difficult to follow. He does himself no favours with his writing style and the book is messy and badly laid out. I am a writer myself, have been attached to journalism, but above all am an avid reader (and for the record have absolutely NO connection to anyone in the book or the US Army in any way, shape or form!). I found this frustrating in the extreme.

So now I am going to put down this dreadful reading experience. I am going to try to forget that I paid for it. I am quite sure this guy goes to bed at night utterly convinced of the truth and sanctity of his crusade.... I'm just sorry I put anything into his pocket by buying this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely readable account of battle at the sharp end!, July 23, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a superb account of life in the LRRP n Vietnam. The author writes not as some chest-thumping war hero but very honestly from the angle of a guy seeking to get more from his service time and succeeding. Very self effacing and honest it is really an interesting insight into how an ordinary guy ends up doing exraordinary things in combat. About my only cmplaint is that it needs photos PLEASE! an easy 6 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE read my review regarding negative feedback on this author! Great book!, July 23, 2013

First Let me alert anyone buying this and other books from this authour that several reviews shown below are part of an organised vendetta by one man against Mr. Linderer. I feel compelled to alert you to this in case you believe the outlandish rubbish shown in several negative reviews. Note they all use the same "information" and seek to discredit? why would anyone buy three books by the same author and then slander them each time in the review section. The person responsibe (Look at the 1 star reviews and you'll find who the culprit is and see him use the same "info" about the author on reviewing all his books, including under fake names!) knows who they are and are DISHONEST & MISLEADING! I add that I have absolutely no connection to the author and have never met or communicated with him. I just checked the facts on the internet and am disgusted by such dishonest behaviour.

Again another "at the sharp end" account of life with the LURPS in Vietnam. Detailed and full of atmosphere it is a no holds barred account and very much worth the read. If not for the unforgivable reviews eminating from one unfortunate this would rate an easy 5 stars from genuine readers!

This is a fabulous book for those who want to get an idea of life in the field with the LURPS in Vietnam. UP close and personal, it doesn't gloss over shortcomings or successes.....it just paints a very sharp and personal image of the war when sldiers are face to face wit the enemy. Very much 5 stars!

3.0 out of 5 stars More veteran input would have been nice., July 2, 2013

Interesting book, but a bit more of what Guth himself said would have been nice rather than a prolonged travelogue from the author. A few interesting new details, but let's face it.....people want to hear the reflections and impressions of the actual soldier more than "we went here.....we saw that......"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reflections on an amazing adventure, July 2, 2013

This is where it's at! Hearing the story of an ordinary man thrust into an exraordinary situation. Malarkey tells his story with honesty and candor: the good, the bad.....and the ugly. A fine example of the finest generation.
