5.0 out of 5 stars Vividly, Poetically, and Movingly Written, October 31, 2010
This review is from: The Mourning Wars (Hardcover)
The Mourning Wars is a superbly created YA novel which brings its characters, a brave young girl and her two families, to bright, sensitive, and compelling life. I was most impressed by the lyrical level of the author's writing and her fervent, vivid imagination. This is a beautiful book which should be read in classrooms by America's young readers. It has a wonderful story to tell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Urgent & Brilliant, October 9, 2006
This review is from: God's Silence (Hardcover)
Franz Wright is a stunning poet who communicates how hard it is to live one single life and who is filled to the brim with raw emotion and compassion for the living and the dead. His lucid poems display grief, fury, love and unbearable tenderness, and Beckett-like hilarity, too: "(I was always the death of the party.)" The poems speak directly to us - intimately, honestly, urgently - with a fierce intelligence and deep spiritual grace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious Poetry, September 8, 2006
This review is from: Man and Camel: Poems (Hardcover)
Mark Strand's Man and Camel is an extraordinarily beautiful and moving book of contemporary poetry. From the unforgettable opening poem of the melancholy king who has lost his desire to rule to the closing, wrenching meditations on the Seven Last Words of Christ, set to Haydn's Quartet Opus 51, Strand is numenous and feeling. It is hard to pick favorite poems; each is a polished gem, but here is just one line that took my breath away: "Then I went to the window/and a river of old people with canes and flashlights/were inching their way down through the dark to the sea." This is a great, powerful book by a great, powerful poet.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Merwin: With Awe & Gratitude, August 14, 2006
This review is from: Present Company (Hardcover)
Recovering from painful surgery, I read and reread W.S. Merwin's Present Company and was rewarded with solace, total honesty, beauty, lucidity, gracefulness, pathos. This is a book of lyric masterpieces by a master poet at the peak of his visionary, humane powers. There are too many poems to quote here. Among my favorites: To My Legs, To My Mother, To My Grandfathers, To Aunt Margie, To the Old, To the Long Table, To Forgetting, To the Gods, To the Sorrow String." Read them all and be reminded of the vast, magical power of truly great poetry. Find yourself changed -- and weeping.
