Garden
Garden

5.0 out of 5 stars You want a fresh one?, October 7, 2013

This review is from: Garden (Audio CD)
The newest album by Brooklyn based "The Shondes" is like a fresh smack in the face! The group, whose name means "The Shame" in yiddish, has nothing to be shameful about. A bass, a guitar, drums, a soulful violin, and the purest lead vocalist I've heard in years, has me playing this album "The Garden" over and over.

This unusually wonderful group of musicians, fronted by the incredible voice of Louisa Rachel Solomon will get to you. They rock, they tease, they play, they actually have fun, while poring out their hearts and souls with lyrics that are timely and yet ageless.

I challange you to listen to "The Garden" and try not to move. This band knows how to rock and has a cult following that has been growing by leaps and bounds. Buy this album, but better yet....go see them live when they come to a town near you......you'll walk away with a smile on your face, and a good feeling in your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars It brings you there !!!, July 29, 2013

The soundtrack CD for the Decendants movie, transported me back to Hawaii and especially to Kauai. The overall serenity and softness of the music, featuring the legendary Gabby ( who, by the way, inspired the legendary IZ ), along with other artists, wove a spell that not only reflected the touching moments of the film, but also evoked a feeling of old Hawaii as well. Keeping to the part of the film that caused the main character ( George Clooney ) to finally decide not to sell off the precious, beautiful land, The soundtrack brings you to a place in mind, that is pure Hawaii....that is paradise....that should always be preserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A poet rises from the streets, July 2, 2013

This review is from: American Ride (Audio CD)
If you took a little early Simon and Garfunkel, a little Bruce Springsteen, a little Bob Dylan, a little Woody Guthrie, a little Clash, and a little Stray Cats....threw it in a pot, you would have the beginning of the spices for this Gumbo.

This doesn't really describe who Willie Nile is.....Willie is the "Real Deal" a true New York City poet and musician. A seasoned artist at his craft, and his lastest CD, "American Ride" is a brilliant opus...a true masterpiece, that touches on many levels. It's real Americana, that moves right along like the title implies....it kicks ass, it touches your heart,it touches your senses,it touches your emotions, and it touches a certain Steinbeck meets Kerouac vibe that can crawl inside you and lift you up.

Beside the singular artistry of Willie Nile, the music, in this album, treats the songs right. It doesn't overpower the lyrics, but it steps on enough gas to keep it in high gear. I was totally impressed and delightfully surprised with Willie Nile's "American Ride"....I enjoyed the ride and you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Photography, September 28, 2012

Fine art photographer, Eric Meola's new book of Bruce Springsteen photographs, is visually stunning. The book, "Streets of Fire" includes photographs Eric took of Bruce from 1977 to 1979...essentially, the time period after "Born to Run" and during "Darkness on the Edge of Town". The two main stages for these photographs are the American Western Desert and Holmedel, New Jersey in the East. Mr. Meola is a master of color photography, however, his mastery of black and white photography is very evident between the covers of this new work. Prepare to view a young and vibrant Bruce in all his glory at a most important time in the artist's life. Along with some valuable text and related Springsteen song lyrics, enjoy going back in time via Eric's exquisite photographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kick-Butt Fresh !, March 22, 2011

This review is from: The Party Ain't Over (Audio CD)
I was not prepared for what I heard on this CD. Wanda Jackson, the seventy three year old, iconic country western star, with ties going all the way back to Elvis, lives up to her profound title, "The Party Ain't Over".

This CD kicks butt with incredable arrangements of covers that range from oldies to contemporary. I particularly liked Wanda's fueled up version of Bob Dylan's "Thunder on the Mountain" from his "Modern Times" CD. The song revved up into overdrive, with Wanda belting out the lyrics at hyperspeed and just when you thought it couldn't get any crazier, the guitars kicked in and blew me away.

There were unusual and incredable arrangements of Little Richard's, "Rip it Up", Amy Winehouse's "I Cheated Myself",in which Wanda sounded remarkably like Ms. Winehouse, and even an exquisite version of the old classic by the DeJohn Sisters...."Teach Me Tonight", along with many more.

White Stripes leader, Jack White, produced the project and worked magic, in a Rick Rubin way of getting the most that an artist has in them. Along with a diverse and powerful band including Mr. White, and Patti Smith's son Jackson, among other great musicians, the final product was an eclectic group of covers that will just blow you away and lives up to Wanda's prophetic title, that "The Party Ain't Over" yet baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most intimate look, February 25, 2011

This review is from: Patti Smith 1969-1976 (Hardcover)
Judy Linn's presentation of her early photographs of Patti Smith from 1969-1976, for me, was a window back in time. A magic ride with the White Rabbit to the early raw days when Patti was a struggling, very young, artist...posing to the lens of a trusted friend and fellow artist.

Judy was honing her craft admittedly, but never-the-less, had an uncanny ability to get right to the heart & soul of the subject...a talent that you either have or you don't and Ms. Linn most definitely has it.

Beside the sweet young images of Ms. Smith, Judy has captured wonderful images of a very young Robert Mapplethorpe, Sam Shepard, Howie Michels, Gerard Melanga, among others who were close to Ms. Smith.

These incredable images put you right back into low rent New York City in the day when Patti Smith was making her bones.

Some of Judy's iconic images will be recognizeable to Patti fans, having appeared in other media, however, most of the presentation is a barrage of fresh, sensitive, sensual, provocative, in your face art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually exquisite !, November 10, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Eric Meola is a master of color photography. This book is a visual trip for the eyes, mind, and heart. Mr. Meola has captured the festivals, but more importantly, the soul of India. Whether or not the reader is interested in India, you can't help being drawn in to the photographs of the people, the landscapes, and the atmosphere that is so richly portrayed.

Beyond the exquisite color photographic compositions in this book, Mr. Meola has that rare photographer's eye to see what most people don't even notice....the glow off a burning cigarette, a gecko that happened to be sitting on a sculpture, a telling expression in the eyes of a young woman.

This book along with its moving text, is a tribute to an India that exists in a Kiplingesque dreamscape that may one day be gone. Enjoy it now and share it with those you love.
