1.0 out of 5 stars Sugar Kowalski in "All About Eve"????, December 31, 2014
Try Sugar Kowalchik in "Some Like it Hot." The photos in the calendar are commonplace, and if the blurb is any indication of the calendar's accuracy, I wouldn't purchase this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars REMINDS ME OF WHY I FELL IN LOVE WITH BETTE, November 14, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: It's The Girls (Audio CD)
"It's the Girls" harkens back to Bette's earliest albums. She's in great voice, the arrangements are faithful to the originals but also have Bette's unique stamp. She's in great voice, and sounds like she's having a ball! So will you when you play this. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun But Flawed, October 4, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had fun reading this book. It was great to be in the company of Poirot again. The mystery starts out convoluted and becomes more so, but not to an off-putting extent. I did have several problems with the book however. One, there is very little sense of when this is taking place. We know it's the 1920s because we're told it is, but the text gives so few descriptions of clothes, automobiles, and current events that it could be taking place at any time. More importantly, I think Sophie Hannah's decision to have the book narrated by Catchpoole was a mistake. First-person narration comes with a decided disadvantage--the narrator cannot know anything he doesn't see or hear about. Hannah ignores this rule and gives us lengthy scenes of Poirot without Catchpoole. She could have gotten away with this with a few simple words: "As Poirot later told me..." But she doesn't do that.
To bring in a totally new character like Catchpoole made Hannah's job a little easier because she didn't have to capture the essence of Hasting or Japp. But that leaves us dissatisfied. We think of those characters when we think of Poirot, and they are missed in this novel. Surely Ms. Hannah will write another Poirot novel, and I hope she brings in more of the elements and people that made us love Christie's Poirot novels. (I'd suggest a third-person, omniscient narrator.)

5.0 out of 5 stars MIRACULOUS BARBRA!!, September 17, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Partners (Audio CD)
Let's stop and think about this woman, Barbra Streisand. She has been working at the top of her game for over half a century, consistently releasing top-notch recordings and appearing in first-rate movies. So many female movie stars aged poorly and worked in Grade-B (or lower) movies (think Davis and Crawford). Many female recording stars lost their labels and had to work for inferior ones. Many saw their sales diminish until even inferior labels dropped them.

This never happened to Barbra Streisand. She's still playing starring roles, and she's still producing albums that reach #1 (as this one surely will). When it does, she will have had a #1 album in six consecutive decades--a feat only she will be able to top (it's only six years till the 2020's!).

She has done all this while maintaining a miraculously youthful voice. Her voice has changed a bit; she sometimes fails to reach the high notes as she used to; and she has occasionally sounded hoarse. But on this record she sounds great! On "It Had to Be You," her duet with Michael Buble, she sounds like she did when she first recorded it in 1964!

Some have complained about Barbra doing new versions of several of her standards--"People" with Stevie Wonder, "Evergreen" with Babyface, "The Way We Were" with Lionel Ritchie, "What Kind of Fool" with John Legend. I'm not someone who listens to Barbra's old album much, so when I heard these songs it was like getting a visit from an old friend--one who had had a makeover!

If I have a complaint, it's that the older singers Barbra duets with--mainly Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder--don't have the voices they used to. (Lionel Richie, on the other hand, sounds fine.)

There is plenty here to please lifelong Barbra fans, and to entice younger listeners to go back into her catalogue and discover all the wonders that lie in store for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, June 20, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I loved the initial version of this book, and this one is far better. The space probes gave the authors so much more to work with in describing the other worlds in our solar system. I read it to escape, and fantasize about actually being on one of the moons of Saturn as it rises over the horizon. Great photo, brilliant artwork and easy to read text. Highly recommended!

1.0 out of 5 stars He was a leader all right..., June 18, 2014
He led us into a totally unnecessary war in Iraq, led us into a recession, led us into relaxed regulations and lower taxes on the richest among us while the poor suffered, and led all presidents in malapropisms. I could go on. His presidency was a disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Typical Republican vitriol in reviews, June 10, 2014
This review is from: Hard Choices (Hardcover)
It's not surprising that Republicans are bashing this book (when most haven't even read it, since it was only available to be shipped yesterday). It's a memoir--did they expect her to paint herself in a negative light? The Repubs are terrified at the prospect of her becoming president. They better get used to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, funny film!, May 6, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: What's Up, Doc? (DVD)
You know a comedy is great when you're reciting lines from it 40 years later and laughing again! This film has many magical moments, from every one of the cast members (Kenneth Mars and Austin Pendleton are hilarious). Streisand looks great, and she pulls off wacky as well as any of the great comedy actresses in the past. And of course there's Madeline Kahn, screeching and whining and making Howard's life hell. I highly recommend this!
