5.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, logical, thoughtful, articulate and thorough: THE gay history!, August 7, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - inspiring - provoking, April 17, 2010
The essays are well written, thoroughly researched, and in a good way provoking. An essential book for people that are interested in sexuality, especially in gay sexuality - and last but not least in gay identity! Inspiring, suggestive...

Nothing for the very conservative ones, not suitable for the ones that are not able to learn, a bad medicine for the ones that believe that the bible has to be taken literally. But the Catholic church has e.g. maintained slavery for centuries, was as long against banking leaving this "dirty business" to the Jews - and has later changed the mind. One day this will also happen concerning accepting homosexuality as a natural fact.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and helpful, February 21, 2010
A useful book about an important topic (at least for gay people - for the gay community that till the very present moment is not spoiled by too many honest scientific works)- useful even if you do not agree with every thesis...comment...judgement. Inspiring and a little bit provocative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning science - a most useful view, even if one might not agree with every thesis, February 21, 2010
A Must to read:

(1) to read to understand
even if not every argument may be convincing the work makes clear that there are more possibilities of moral understandig and - at the same time! - of scientific search of the truth than the ones thaught by many "official" opinion leaders of science and of the body of the roman catholic church... the truth is seldom just black or white

(2) to be better prepared to fight for truth in science and - not less important - for equal rights for gay people for science often is as well a matter of (social) justice

(3) however the findings are judged it is a good way of struggling...argue in a scientic way if you do not agree and go not for the person...

Thank you John Boswell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Science at its best: gay sex and its socially made valuation, February 20, 2010
Joseph Couture performs a great service by making visible one of the most popular (and sometimes vilified or even demonized) forms of gay sex. But what does "public sex" mean? Sex in the wrong places? Places that criminalize the acting person? What does "public" really mean?

Looking closer: public gay sex is sex in parks, saunas, sex clubs, darkrooms...Hidden in bushes, in houses, in discos, in scene bars...Hidden, often without any bigger advertisment or with just a little mark (e.g. the rainbow flag as the internationally well known sign for a gay place). Or concerning the sex in parks burrowed by the night. What is public about that? Normally people do not want to be seen having sex. Or just by peoplehidden who are gooing for that (voyeurs, gays loving threesomes...). And never by police or homophobic people or possibly violent macho youth!

Sex is a very private thing (at least for most of us!), for gay and others. Even if it takes place in the so called public. The distinction between public an private is a relatively recent historical creation and a socially made distinction.

Joseph Couture is a passionate writer with a good sense for politics and for human beeings: for the good and bad.
