5.0 out of 5 stars Good for You and Tastes OK, May 28, 2012
I added Amazing Grass Green to my smoothie recipe and it made it taste better! I think it has a grassy flavor with a hint of sweetness--but only 1 gram of sugar. I add it to my almond milk, psyllium, flax, chia seed, banana and blueberry smoothie and think it made it better. That said...I only drink this concoction because of the health benefits. I mean, I would much rather eat a bagel with cream cheese...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Motivation but a Little too Severe, May 28, 2012
Take It Off, Keep It Off by Paul James is a guide to help you lose fat through diet and exercise. Paul "PJ" James was an underwear model when he decided to help people get in shape. He found he couldn't understand why heavy people had so much trouble motivating themselves to lose weight...so he intentionally gained 100 lbs to figure it out. He found himself depressed and withdrawn; not interested in sex...and obsessed with food.

James managed to lose the 100lbs within the year he set the goal to gain/lose and wrote this book to motivate heavy people to do so too.

As a formerly overweight person who is now a healthy weight and a designer/life coach, I love to check out new weight loss books to recommend ones I like to clients. This book is great on motivation; I just question a couple of his "rules" and think the diet is a bit too restrictive.

His fat loss program begins with what he calls the KO-90 plan. It is for 3 months. In a nutshell, it includes 15 minutes of cardio daily before breakfast, 3 meals a day and 2 snacks and 50 minutes of strength training 4 days a week.

The diet plan consists of "clean foods"--no processed food, no dairy (no skim milk for my coffee--no way), no added sugar, fruit, salt (there is virtually no salt in vegetables. I think a little salt on them goes a long way...) or alcohol. You eat plenty of lean meats, leafy veggies and whole grains. Mostly protein. 90/60/10; protein/carbs/fat. (What about lean non-meat choices?)

James tells us about his success and his client's success. He is empathic to the struggles of overweight people.

I recommend the book, but think it being as restrictive as it is will cause many to "fall off the wagon." A small amount of salt or skim milk ain't going to hurt...but obviously, everyone must decide what is right for them. Also, keep in mind he is a trainer...stuff like salt can cause some bloating...but with all that exercise, you'll sweat it out, anyway. I toyed with how many stars I should give it because of this--3 or 4--but ultimately decided to give it 4 because of his motivational stories and the earnestness of his voice for wanting those to lose weight.

I also recommend that when you embark on something life changing like this, you also invest in making your home as lovely as you can to make yourself feel loved and pampered...you will need it! My favorite book that does just that (and gets rid of toxins in your home and kitchen) is HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

Good luck!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the Job, February 28, 2012
Psyllium Whole Husks ain't sexy....but it does the job. Helps you eliminate and lowers cholesterol. Just beware that when you add it to a liquid, it thickens it pretty quickly....so mix and drink up! My husband drinks his with water and I do occasionally....but yuck. Prefer it as part of my smoothie--banana, blueberries, almond milk, flax and chia seeds. Great deal at Amazon--50% off!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy this if You want to get Fat and get Diabetes!, January 16, 2012
Quick and Easy Family Dinners is just like all the other cookbooks by the Gooseberry Patch publishers--recipes filled with empty calories. There is barely a vegetable in sight--and when there is, it is usually drowning in some condensed creamed soup and other fattening ingredients.

Take mom's potato salad, for example. Recipe calls for 5 lb of potatoes, a dozen eggs, quart of mayo and a few other ingredients...and 1 onion. No other veggies--no celery, pickles, anything to make this dish anything but fattening and unhealthy. Oh yeah...forgot the best part--yellow food coloring is part of recipe!

And how about a side dish for the beef and noodles or baked spaghetti...how about creamy macaroni or potato salad??? That is what is suggested!

Two neighbors founded this publishing company and now they just crank 'em out. For the recipes, they simply ask readers to submit...for a free book if published! Yuck. The recipes are just disgusting...cans of condensed cream soup in everything, tons of fats, yuck yuck yuck.

Buy this book if you want to gain weight, get diabetes and have other health issues.

I bought this connector for my pool pump because it is exposed to the elements when connected to extension cord. Now when it rains or snows, I know the connection will stay dry. Great idea!

An outdoor cat found me and I bought this to keep him comfortable. Perfect size...the heated pad is so cozy and soft and is only on when he is in it. Electric cord has sturdy steel wrapped around it to prevent a cat from chewing it. If you must have an outdoor cat, this is just purr-fect!

1.0 out of 5 stars Much Hype Little Substance, December 21, 2011
120 5 star reviews in two days??? I understand that this author has a following, but trust me--most of these are fake reviews.

So...figured out how so many reviews got posted in 2 days. The author offered a video for $24.95 plus a *FREE* hardcover book (plus $5 S&H)...she claimed the content of video and book were a little different so you could HAVE BOTH for the price of ONE!!!(Book has exercises and recipes.) So, all these people ordered her video and Amazon (and probably B&N) shipped out books date book released--12/20. This did a really important thing--it made her book shoot up to #1 because so many were sold at once. Now people see and and buy it....brilliant marketing, Johnson. (You will note that her book--unless she gets more publicity, will steadily rise in Amazon until it disappears...Now she will say her book was #1 on Amazon. Crafty.)

So a bunch of suckers paid $30 when they could have paid $16 for book only.

To begin with, few have the real reviewers name. Second--and this is a biggie--the vast majority of the reviews are written by someone who has written only one review. I understand that people get books in advance, but that so many reviews have been written in 2 days is simply unprecedented.

This is the time of year that the publishers love to crank out the weight loss/exercise/change your life books. For all this book promises, there is nothing new here; it's a bunch of promises to help you change your life in one book.

Fitness superstar Chalene Johnson is just that...she is not an expert at diets or trained in any way to help people change habits.

I simply rolled my eyes at her finding your "soul mate exercise".

If Johnson were THAT good, believe me, she would be booked on all the talk shows...but she's not.

This book comes out just as we are making our New Year's resolutions...your new one should be not to be duped by the newest crop of books to promise the world...only to disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Nice, November 1, 2011
The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well by Deborah Needleman is a terrific resource for home decorators. Needleman writes that the point of decorating is to "create the background for the best life you can live." As a designer myself, I fully agree with this sentiment.

This book is the opposite of what a staged home would be like...(staging is when one creates a home to appeal to all and depersonalizes it.)

According to Needleman, one does not decorate simply to have a home look good...one decorates to feel comfortable, to fit ones lifestyle--functionality, and to feel good in. "Decorating improves ones life!" She claims.

The reader is asked to decide what you want your home to do--what functions should it serve? Next, how does your home make you feel? With this information, you are guided in furniture and styling to make your home work best for you.

The goal is to make your home personal and comfortable and highly functional. she writes: "Luxury is simply what makes you happy."

The remainder of the book is divided into sections with many tips on how to make a functional, personal and comfortable home. Within each of the following chapters, these are discussed:

* Lighting
* The entry way
* Areas for conversation
* "A bit of quirk"--personalizing your space to reflect you
* "Spots for books, drinks, and feet"
* "Cozifications"
* Bedroom
* Bathroom
* "Glamifications"--wallpaper, objects
* "Dinners with friends"--making entertaining special with pretty objects and functional with a well stocked pantry
* Personal stuff
* Smells--adding flowers, scented things
* History--adding antiques, crafts

Altogether, I highly recommend this book. Another book I recommend to my clients and friends is HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET for more great tips on how to decorate your home for living well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!, September 25, 2011
This review is from: Design*Sponge at Home (Hardcover)
As a designer, I am constantly checking out new books on decorating. This book is perfect for the beginner, especially for young people who are still learning who they are, and their style--and who may have more time then money to decorate!

Design Sponge at Home by Grace Bonney is 400 pages of inspiration! Bonney has already inspired her readers with her blog and now she created a book to do so.

The book begins with a "Sneak Peek" into other homes of creative people who decorate to reflect their personality. These homes are not "Architectural Digest"--but real, sometimes funky, always creative and often DIY homes.

The next section focuses on do it yourself projects: 25 from the blogs' archives and 25 new ones from readers and contributors. DIY has become fashionable over the past 10 years, and Bonney, an admitted novice, has fully embraced this lifestyle. The projects range in difficulty from very simple to those crafted by artists. All are inspiring and meant to get the reader's creativity flowing. Each project is well illustrated and described well so that just about anyone could do the projects themselves. One of my favorite projects are the simple concrete spheres for the garden--easy and cheap to make.

The next section offers lessons on flower arranging...my personal favorite way to liven up any space in the home.

Finally, the book shows before and after homes...

The essential idea of this book is to show the reader how to create a home that reflects their personality and makes them happy.

I highly recommend Design Sponge and would like to recommend another book that I often give my clients: HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME AND YOUR PLANET for more tips on how to create the home of your dreams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but Could be Better, July 12, 2011
If you have a Bunn coffee machine, you will need something to measure the amount of water you need because there are no marks on machine. This does the trick and pours easily--no spills--into machine. I give it 4 stars not 5 because it is almost impossible to read the quantity marks. So bad that I had to take a marker and make 3 marks for the different sized pots of coffee I make.
