3.0 out of 5 stars An OK Read, March 3, 2014

This is the first book I have read by Helene Tursten. I don`t know whether she has written others. I did finish the book but it didn`t hold my attention the way a lot of others do. However, I do enjoy the Scandinavian writers. The story starts with the murder of a man in a house that is set on fire. A crime that is not solved.

The story then moves on fifteen years. Someone else dies in a fire in similar circumstances. The detective in charge is convinced that somehow the two cases are linked and sets out to try and cope with a strange assortment of people. Artists, dancers, elderly people whose memories are not too reliable.

Eventually all is revealed, but I think the book is a bit long. It is OK but not more than that.

This is the forth and final TV film following the progress of the special police unit run by tough detective Cieran Hinds. He has his usual staff working with him but is suspicious of them all, because someone has reported the mix up that was the result of episode three. Something he has tried to hide. So as he and his team work on the murder of a young actress, he is also trying to.find out who has betrayed him. Because of the betrayal, he has lost the promotion he desperately wanted.

The story is full of the usual plot twists and turns. I do like Lynda La Plante`s TV work. She is a master of the crime genre. At the end of the film, there are interviews with actors and guest stars from the programme. Most interesting.

I got such a surprise at the very end of the film that I thought I might have mis-understood. I re-played it and once again La Plante has managed to give us her trade mark shock. Great TV and story telling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Television, January 23, 2014

I am a big fan of Lynda La Plant`s TV writing. I don`t enjoy her books but when it comes to TV she has few equals.

Her characters are incredibly real. Ordinary, eccentric, and with villains of incredible cruelty. I like the fact that so much research has gone into her writing. It always has a ring of truth.

This particular story is the third of four. The main characters are in all of them. The films are true ensemble pieces where we know about their lives and problems. However, they still work and produce results, despite the great pressures that always seem to come from the higher police echelon and of course, the ever intrusive press..

The standard is enormously high and all the actors rise to the occasion. I don`t feel that there is a weak link anywhere, and though the series was made some years ago, nothing has dated.

I thoroughly recommend the whole series to crime buffs. I`m sure they won`t be disappointed.

Torquil MacLeod is a good writer and with this, his third in the Malmo series, he is back to top form.

His heroine, Detective Anita Sundstrom, is on a case, looking for a man who had come to Malmo and then disappeared. His frantic wife explains that he was seeking a missing person. He had expected a big pay off but his wife knew no details of his case and wasn`t able to give much detail.

All of the usual characters are in the book. Her overweight and bad tempered boss, Chief Inspector Moberg, her hardworking and reliable young assistant Hakim, and the hated, supercilious, Karl Westermark.

Part of the story is set in Scotland which Anita visits and where she gets a deal of help from a local detective.

As usual, this is an easy read and a very good one. Thoroughly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don`t get caught in a Snowstorm!, January 22, 2014

Set in a severe snowstorm, in a northern English city, it shows just how lives can be changed, when these big weather events happen

The story is based on the disappearance of a young hairdresser who tries to get home, but is caught by snow that is too deep for her small car. When her car is found after the storm, she is not in it. Her mobile is there, but the battery is flat. Enquiries to the tenants of a couple of houses bring no answers. Her mother is frantic, her boyfriend does get worried, although when she rang him for help, he was sick and did nothing.

We know, as the reader, that she has undergone a horrible experience and it takes a lot of sorting by the police.

An easy and quite entertaining read.

I was engrossed by this story from the moment it started. When the names of the actors and actresses appeared, the only one I recognised was Gillian Anderson. The documentary tells us that the others are Irish actors and they are all excellent. It took a little while to get to know some of the faces but it wasn`t a real problem. Filmed in Belfast adds greatly to the atmosphere.

We know from the first few minutes, who is the killer, so we don`t have to work that out. The actor who plays him, Jamie Dornan, is terrifying. So creepy that I even went and checked that all our doors were locked! The scene of him playing with the hair that he has cut from one of his victims, is one of the most compelling I have ever seen.

Gillian Anderson is the detective brought in from the Metropolitan police, to try and find something that will set them on the killer`s trail. He has left nothing to chance and is very clever.

The ending is unusual and not what I expected. It leaves the opportunity to carry on the series and `The Fall, Series 2` is being filmed at the moment. A lot of the actors from this film will be in the new film. The whole series is a credit to everyone concerned. I can`t praise it highly enough.

This story begins with the murder of a former police officer in a drug den. The two police officers from Above Suspicion series One, are again the main characters. He is a very tough chief, she is the much younger, detective. He isn`t an easy boss, she too can be difficult. They are often at loggerheads but there is an attraction between them, which shows occasionally.

They try to find the chief drug dealer, but the more they explore, the harder he is to trace. He seems to be invisible. There is a rip-roaring finish to the episode. Most exciting, and an agreement which is maybe, not quite honest.

This is another Lynda La Plant story showing her work at its very best and that of the cast and crew too.

Thoroughly recommended.

I have always been a fan of Lynda LaPlant`s work. She writes the most believable stories and always seems to have the perfect cast to perform them. I remember seeing her in a documentary years ago, where she was talking to policemen and forensic scientists to ensure that what she was writing was correct and could happen. All that goundwork has obviously paid off. I must say that some of her stories are horrific and I have been known to sometimes shut my eyes!!

Some interesting interviews with cast and crew are on the disc, and, show how the excellent writing rubs off onto everyone as they are all challenged to perform at their very best.

I really can`t recommend this (and the whole series), highly enough. This first episode is compelling viewing as are nos 2.and 3. No 4 is out of stock at present but I will get that too when it becomes available.

I always enjoy the work of Peter Robinson. His descriptions of the beautiful (but mostly wet and cold Dales), I find really enthralling and his plots and the characters involved are always fascinating, and the killer so well hidden.

This book is alright but to my mind, not as good as his best. Perhaps it`s the theme which has a lot to do with the drug culture of the seventies. The body of an old man is found and Banks and Co are called in to what is thought to be a suicide. Of course it isn`t, and we go backwards and forwards between the seventies and now, as he solves the problem.

Interesting but not special.

This is Walter Matthau as his lugubrious best. He is a man who has spent all of his wealth and decides that he now needs a wealthy wife, whom he can then murder, and thus get all her money. He sees the perfect victim in a very clever, but quite socially inept young scientist.

She falls for him while he is reading books on how to use poison! But, he finds he is gradually tidying her up and helping her through awkward moments. Not what he expected to happen.

This is a happy, gentle comedy. I recommend it.
