5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice for the whole family, March 26, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is realistic and upbeat. The author writes from experience and addresses all kinds of issues that are faced by the family, from care to physical changes. The book at the back for children is not so much a story for kids, as a narrative of suggestions to help the child(children) understand and be a part of the care process. I am sorry that I don't have more detail to share, as I've already sent it to my sister. She told me it was a great help.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not meet expectations at all, March 26, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought it for my young niece, to help her understand her Mother's sickness and to work through her feelings. This book is more of a colouring book and presumes the child's feelings. For example, on one side, a very sad rabbit is shown and on the other, the child is supposed to draw how he/she feels about her/his Mother's sickness. The message is that 'you are sad', but what if the child is angry or confused? I had hope for a more open-ended book, to be used for talking about her feelings and about the disease.

Another point against the book is that it presumes a two-parent traditional family. I know we can't account for every iteration of family make-up, but the book goes on about the Father helping and the child helping the Father and such. It is too bad because the concept of the book is excellent. I bought it because the reviews were very positive and I thought it would focus on the Mother and her illness and what could happen.

I suggest "When a parent has cancer: a guide to caring for your children" by Wendy S. Harpham instead, as this book has great advice and perspective for everyone in the family.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very British translation; Very teenager kind of book., October 12, 2011
This review is from: The Game (The Valley) (Paperback)
Grabs the reader with a mysterious beginning. Lots of female-character-interested-in-the-guys point of view, but not quite a romance, more like a mystery/thriller effect. Enjoyable read for me (but not as gripping as the Hunger Games - also a lot less violent!!)because the British expressions and the pace are both fun. Definitely set up for a series run, since the two main characters are developed with their background filled in as the book progresses. And for under 10$, I would get the next one too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative!, December 12, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book has an old-fashioned feel with plenty of bonuses like letters, pop-ups and pull-outs (somewhat fragile!). It would appeal to anybody, boy or girl who likes the idea of exploring or camping.

I recommend 6 yrs and up because the extras allow a child to 'grow into it'. The layout is fun and fact-filled with a variety of appealing topics from getting ready to explore (suggested tool kit), past expeditions in the jungle, arctic, desert etc... and how to survive. The book appeals to the imagination.

Explorer - a Daring Guide for Young Adventurers would make a nice complement to the Daring Book for Girls or the Dangerous Book for Boys, though it stands on its own nicely.

3.0 out of 5 stars But the head might rip off, August 30, 2009
This review is from: Ballerina Barbie by Mattel (Toy)
Our family found these Ballerina Barbies were not that durable. Two out of three have lost their heads. It could be the girls' technique of clothing removal, but the other Barbies we have are intact...However they still play with the 'short neck'ones!

2.0 out of 5 stars Has what it takes for a fun Castle, but, August 30, 2009
My girls love the idea of playing with this castle, but they find the figures don't fit any of the furniture pieces and the prince won't stay standing. Mostly, they set up a scene and abandon the playset on the floor after 10 minutes, so the pieces get lost. Or they stick the prince in 'prison' - a tower only accessible by the window, and run over to ask me to fish him out - no easy task!
Spend your money on something else. We got more mileage out of the Disney Princess figurine set.Disney Princess Figurine Set

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for young families!, August 30, 2009
Feeding the Whole Family (3rd Edition) is an excellent cookbook + nutrition resource for folks who want to learn more about 'eating right'. Cynthia Lair's tone is sincere and real. She doesn't assume we all know about grains and beans, so it's a wonderful introduction to many tasty recipes for a Whole Food approach. Her book has great suggestions for school lunches and ways to make discovering new foods exciting for young children. Plus, she shows how to include 'Baby' at the family table, without cooking a whole other meal! The recipes have been updated from the first + revised editions and some meat dishes are included this time around, along with a clear one-page recipe format.
