5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful, April 6, 2011
Koushun Takami's Battle Royale is a grotesque, graphic, and gruesome look at just how far someone will go to survive, regardless of their age. Though the character list is very extensive, the book loosely follows three main characters in the 42-person cast: Shuya Nanahara, Shogo Kawada, and Noriko Nakagawa. These three are unlikely comrades, but the reader is able to connect with them in a very deep way regardless. Even through rough Japanese to English translation, Battle Royale will not only pull the reader into this world of mistrust, deceit, and death, but make the reader feel as if they are truly there experiencing the horrible Program with the other students. This feeling readers will experience makes the tags grotesque, graphic, and gruesome even more important. Battle Royale is not for the squeamish or those easily traumatized. Takami takes no prisoners when it comes to describing death and decomposition. But if that is something readers can look passed, they can look forward to a haunting, life-altering love for the main three characters and their stories.
