5.0 out of 5 stars Praise well deserved, July 8, 2011
This book lives up to the hype. If you want to know how to be best prepared for violent encounters AND the aftermath thereof, get this book. Everything is well explained--no "fairy-dusting" here. The concepts presented are profound yet easily grasped, with references cited in text where appropriate. Miller outlines all phases of the encounter, potential pitfalls and weaknesses one could expect, and how to conduct yourself with respect to the law. Recommended for civilians and professionals alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never go to work without it, May 21, 2011
For the past ten years, the Tarascon Pharmacopoeia has been my favorite and most frequently used take-anywhere pocket reference. You can look up meds by brand or generic name, look at drugs by class, get relative cost information, pregnancy/liver/renal precautions, info for codes, and more. Although I have electronic access to Lexi-Comp, I personally find that this little book answers most drug questions that come up within my practice. While the deluxe edition does have more info and precautions for use, this added luxury comes at the expense of size.

I would recommend that any prescriber/pharmacist carry this and a copy of the Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars So now it makes sense..., May 21, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Dr. Yang eloquently outlines his understanding of embryonic breathing on this enjoyable DVD. Throughout the course of the video seminar, he simplifies the main concepts and explains how this form of meditation is relevant and useful even today. In the video, Dr. Yang describes how to work into and progress with this form of meditation, what the practitioner can expect, and the benefits/pitfalls of which one should be aware.

After viewing the video, you will have a good idea of what embryonic breathing is all about. This doesn't mean you will be able to do it, but it is a starting point and will help complement what you learn from instruction and hands-on experience. I would highly suggest viewing this video a time or two prior to reading the "Qigong Meditation: Embryonic Breathing" book if you wish to better comprehend and retain the subject matter of the text.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacks practicality and objective support, May 21, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The first few chapters of this book are pretty solid--mostly a testimony of Brazier's vegan-based philosophy for performance athletes and weekend warriors. He presents a compelling argument for pursuing one's goals, eating right, and taking care of the body. There is a good discussion of how stress and lifestyle impact health, and how that in turn affects the body's performance capacity. Following these sections, he introduces a section on performance improvement. This chapter contains a solid regimen of exercises; however, the descriptions and illustrations leave much to be desired. If you are not familiar with how to do these exercises properly already, I would seek advice elsewhere for proper technique.

The section on incorporating vegan-athlete friendly foods into your diet was informative, albeit neither well-referenced nor entirely practical. It would be to both the author and the reader's benefit had the former been more specific about how he knows, for instance, that "maca helps lower cortisol levels, which will improve sleep quality." There should be a numbered citation to go along with this and other such statements, not just a list of references at the back of the book. Another flaw with this book is the fascination with exotic foods/ingredients and Vega-brand products. Although I have yet to read it, other readers suggest that "Thrive Diet," offers a better discussion of how to utilize more commonplace grocery fare for the rest of us who want to enjoy similar performance results.

What I wanted from this book was dietary advice on how to better operate a high-caloric lifestyle on vegan fuel, so to speak. This book, although somewhat informative, fell short.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye candy, February 19, 2011
This review is from: Wudang Sword (DVD)
This really is an impressive DVD. There were two things that I really enjoyed about this video. The first was the skill of Master Xuan Yun. His technique and knowledge are truely top notch--he's the real deal. The second point, perhaps more important than the first, is the superb instructional quality of this DVD. Master Xuan Yun begins with basic exercises, stances, and positions to get you started, covers the steps of the form as well as some common mistakes, and in the end he relates it all back to the original practical applications. The whole instructional package is very well put together and thoughtfully produced. Master Xuan Yun's instruction and mastery of the sword is something to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding, January 16, 2011

This review is from: Snake Fist Emei Style (DVD)
Everything in this DVD is wonderful--Helen Liang's technique is simply top-notch. My only critique is that for those unfamiliar with the snake style, the DVD lacks a step-by-step breakdown of how to execute each phase of the form. Some of the techniques and postures are rather complicated, and may require extra time and patience in order to be successfully digested. Don't let that be a put-off for getting this video, however; this program is really a delight once you have put in the time and figured out how to dance the dance.

Advanced Practical Chin Na In Depth: YMAA Seminar Series

5.0 out of 5 stars All the perks of attending a great seminar--right from your own home!, January 16, 2011
As is stated by Dr. Yang in the program, this video is a selection of Chin Na / White Crain techniques that are useful against strikes. The content, as implied by the title, is a bit advanced for entry-level students or those without a background in either chin na, hapkido, aikido, or military/police come-along techniques. I would recommend the novice first consider becoming familiar with the Shaolin Chin Na or Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na manuals and/or the Chin Na In Depth Course (DVD) before deciding to purchase this product.

In my opinion, the best part of this video is that you get all the benefits of going to a Dr. Yang seminar without having to foot the travel bill. What's more, the DVD format allows you to go back and review whenever you require reference or clarification. In practice, I use this video as a reference for specific technique-related questions and the DVD copy of Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na as a visual training aid to accompany practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend, January 16, 2011
I had heard about qigong ball training some 15 years when I first started practicing tai chi. Unfortunately, however, I did not have the chance to do much hands-on with it nor had I heard or seen anything about it since. I recently decided that I would start training with a ball regardless of available instruction and, as fate would have it, was introduced to this text by an acquaintance.

As other reviewers have stated, this book is composed of two main parts: first, a magnificently eloquent primer in qigong theory by Dr. Yang; second, a practicum for learning and mastering the ball techniques. If you are serious about the practical use of ball qigong, I would recommend perusing the text prior to beginning training with the DVDs. In this way, you can familiarize yourself with the the principles of ball qigong in order to better appreciate the dynamic visual reference afforded by the DVD medium. Although the book does a fine job of describing and depicting the various movements, the DVD makes this much more simple and efficient.

While the content of this book could well be considered advanced study in Tai Chi, you wouldn't get that from Dr. Yang and Mr. Grantham's easily digested style of writing. For either the tai chi novice or the more advanced practitioner, this book does not disappoint.
