4.0 out of 5 stars I am More than a Clone, June 9, 2011
"Matteo Alacran was not born: He was harvested." These words enveloped me right from the start. Although I'm not a big fan of science fiction, The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer, was, undoubtedly, one of the most interesting and thought-provoking novels I have ever read.
Set in the future land of Opium (what once was Mexico), Matteo Alacran (the clone of the famous drug lord, El Patron) was kept from the world around him, until one day when he entered the "Big House," and his life changed forever. He was confronted with good, evil, persecution and prevalence, as he faced challenges which threatened his friendships, life and survival. Famer's emphasis on the social, ethical and political issues of this time portray these aspects of Matt's struggles, adding sustenance to this already engaging novel.
Through his strong will and fortitude, Matt is determined to get to the bottom of his purpose of being. He uses his curiosity and position as El Patron's clone to get information on his existence and his purpose. However, his curiosity brings him news which he did not expect; inevitably changing Matt's opinions of those who are closest to him. Matt soon realizes that his only way to survive is to escape the nearly impossible and dangerous journey out of Opium and into the United States.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a page turning novel you can't put down. It tells a story that stretches your mind beyond today's beliefs and into the future, but, most importantly, one that teaches you that although a difference may mark you, it does not define who you are. Nancy's Farmer's, The House of the Scorpion, is just that novel, and certainly, a must read!

This review is from: Fisher-Price E-L-M-O (Toy)
I bought this dancing ELMO for my 1 1/2 year old granddaughter. Although she was a little afraid of it at first, she loves it now! She won't put it down and is constantly dancing with it. It's definitely her favorite toy!!
