5.0 out of 5 stars Another great DuFresne Guide, January 3, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
DuFresne knows Michigan and thoroughly covers all the best trails- Upper Penninsula as well as the Lower. The guide is detailed and informative with topo maps of all the trails as well as access points, difficulty, hiking time and mileage break-downs along every trail.
Though certainly geared towards backpackers, he also includes info., when possible, for family outings and day hike options. I really like how he breaks down all the trails extensively.
If you're planning on hiking or backpacking in Michigan, get this book. This is the 3rd book of his I've bought and I'd buy anything the guy has to sell- great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide, January 3, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Although it's the only guide written for Michigan's largest state Park, it gives you everything you need.
DuFresne knows Michigan and thoroughly covers the Porkies. The guide is detailed and informative with topo maps of all the trails as well as access points, difficulty, hiking time and mileage break-downs along every trail. Though geared towards hikers and backpackers, it also covers winter activities and fishing.
I really like how he breaks down all the trails extensively and also gives you plenty of options depending on what length of a trek you're looking for-from a day hike up to a 6-day excursion.
This is the 3rd book of his I've bought and I'd buy anything the guy has to sell- great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, February 5, 2010

National Geograhic does as great of a job highlighting the state parks as they did for the national parks.

They can't cover every state park but they do a thorough review of 4-6 parks from each state (they allowed each state to recommend their best parks). Plenty of info. is provided regarding camping, activities, best times to visit, trails to hike, specific areas to visit and things to see, etc.

THE BACKPACKER'S HANDBOOK

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners and Experienced, December 19, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An excellent book for both beginners and those more experienced. Chris Townsend has logged thousands of miles on a few continents. He's done every major trail in the U.S., backpacking in the backcountry for months at a time and his experience really shows.

He has also reviewed tons of gear for "Backpacking" magazine and he clearly explains to the reader what gear works and why/why not. He goes into much detail about clothing, hiking boots, tents, etc. While it may seem he goes overboard with the minute details, the reader will come away with a knowledge of what works hiking and backpacking (methods, skills and gear) and what doesn't.

Also evident is the author's respect for nature; his reinforcing of the "leave no trace" philosophy resonates throughout.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, May 9, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I sprung for the "Absolute" edition because of all the great reviews I've read/heard over the years. But sadly, I was disappointed by Watchmen. Maybe in its day it was revolutionary and unique, but it hasn't stood the test of time for me. I'll stick with V For Vendetta- a true classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Under-rated, July 28, 2006
This review is from: Happy Pills (Audio CD)
This album was already written-off by critics and most of the public shortly after it came out. Critics accused the band of deliberately recording a safe album because that was what would sell as grunge died.

But I think the band really grew and spread their wings. Maybe it was the production, but I still really love this album and wish it wasn't so under-rated.
