2.0 out of 5 stars Musically wonderful but the disc is fatally flawed, September 8, 2014
As others have said this is beautifully sung and the sounds is magnificent. UNFORTUNATELY it has two terrible faults: The picture is so dark at times one can hardly see what is going on on stage. In the opera house with opera glasses that may not be a big issue but on disc where there is no way to easily lighten things up it is a disaster. The second issue is for those who need ENGLISH subtitles. The other languages are fine but for English this production has used an obscure translation that is almost incomprehensibe. To make matters even worse they are on screen only fleetingly and there is not enough time to read them let alone work out what they are trying to tell you. Subtitles are a functional tool to tell you what the singers are singing about, they are NOT a test of the translator's ability to concoct mediaeval English!! The Salzburg production is the Elektra to get, this one has sadly shot itself fatally in the heart which is such a shame as musically it is wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars For what it is this is brilliant!, August 26, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Let me start by stating what this is not: It is not David Attenborough and although made by the BBC nature team it is not at all like a BBC nature documentary. It is a fun film aimed squarely at the 3 - 13 age bracket with a good overlap into mums and dads. No animal gets hurt apart from some salmon who are eaten and there is lots of light dialogue that manages to avoid the cheesy levels many previous Disney films descended to. It is a delightful film about a mother bear and her two cubs during their first year and it is most beautifully filmed. The extras are good two. My only active dislike was the ghastly song used in the film but then I am almost certainly the wrong generation for that! This is a perfect film to use to introduce young children to the great outdoors. My copy heads for my grandchildren and I know they will love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blu-ray big improvement over DVD, August 25, 2014
This is a good grade B western and I have always had a soft spot for it. Previous DVD releases were terrible and although this BD release is far from perfect it is a big improvement on the DVD. The English subtitles are very good and the sound clear. The picture is not very good and it shows its age but it is more than acceptable. If you want this film then this is the disc to get. No extras and region A locked so sorry Europe you will have to wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable series well transferred, August 7, 2014

What a nasty lot they were! I thought the series was well done and the transfer to disc is excellent. Good entertainment of its type.

The disc is good but I felt more could have been made of the story. I am not sure I will return to it too often.

I did not like this at all and gave it away but the transfer is fine for such an old film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series but this is not a genuine remaster., August 7, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is not a remaster but the upscale looks a bit better than the DVD and if you do not have this wonderful set then this is the best version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic acting, August 7, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An old and in many ways dated film but Anthony Quinn's performance is one of the treasures of cinema. The transfer is as good as one can expect but it is the acting you should be getting this for.

2.0 out of 5 stars I could not find the Disney magic in this offering, August 7, 2014
This review is from: Tarzan [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
My memories of this did not live up to seeing it again. The story is trite and even a bit nasty for kids as a gorilla child and then Tarzan's parents are rather obviously killed and eaten by a fierce leopard in the opening minutes. The rest of the story has none of the charm and sparkle of such works of genius as the Jungle Book or Robin Hood and the music / songs are quite dreadful. The baddies are not that bad and Tarzan is depicted more like an Olympic athlete of rather low intelligence and not at all someone to be attracted to. I struggled to see it through to the end so cheered myself up watching the vastly better Aristocats. Rent at best. One of Disney's worst in my view.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic acting, not so keen on the color balance, July 25, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Fantastic presentation of the Shakespeare play with Olivier at his best. I found the color restoration a bit too strong and not as natural as I had hoped but it is a lot better than the old DVD.
