Like all of O'brien's books, theologically sound, literary inspiring, spiritually prophetic. In reading this book I find myself desiring more of myself...

4.0 out of 5 stars Readable and Challenging!, May 18, 2014

This book is written with a clarity and pastoral concern that the trinity be cherished as an indispensible doctrine of the church for everyday believers. It gives forth a very lucid presentation of why the trinity is important, as well as what Christianity would be like without it. Powerful and worth reading!

Show Me the Way: Daily Lenten Readings
Show Me the Way: Daily Lenten Readings

5.0 out of 5 stars Lent with Henri... Wondeful!, April 28, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The past two years I have used this book as a part of my Lenten journey. It is by far one of the most consistent devotionals I have used for some time. The format makes it easy to pick up and read for a minute, or for an hour. The substance revolves around traditional Lenten themes, yet I was finding myself thinking in directions that were new for me, all under the tutelage of Nouwen. What a wonderful mentor in all things spiritual. Very Christ centered, all of it good news.

5.0 out of 5 stars Father and Sons....., April 28, 2010
Nouwen is one of the best and most accessible writers in modern Christianity. His work is ecumenical in nature, though some believe he reflects to much his own particular denominational family. This book as a meditation on Rembrandt's painting of the same name, is one of his very best. He will lead you to a place of thanksgiving for the love of a Father that is always faithful. His focus is on the father, the central figure of the story. He also leads us to identify with both sons, the prodigal and the self-righteous. As an aside, this book compares favorably with Timothy Kellar's book, "The Prodigal God." Finally, Nouwen demonstrates the true value of art, and why we need to value it, as well as make it a part of our individual lives. Henri will be missed, but this work will live on way beyond his earthly ministry, and I for one, am blessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dante as faithfully translated... the best available!, April 8, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Dante is part of my "Life Curriculum," books that I read and reread throughout my years, inorder to establish a good basis for thinking and believing. They are supposed to help me live a "good" life, a moral and faithful life. This translation by Mendelbaum is exceptional. It adheres to the poetic spirit of the epic, as well as the intended meaning. In this edition, the notes at the back of the book are helpful in understanding the contemporary politics that Dante is often referring to, as well as little known personalities. This edition is a pleasure to hold in your hands, beautiful format and font. It also has copies of older artistic engravings that actually help in understanding the story. If you are looking for a one volume translation of Dante's Comedy, buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Six Frigates and a little known history..., April 8, 2010

This is a wonderfully written book that should be read by anyone with an interest in political or military history of the young republic, the United State. This book covers how she navigated her precarious early existence between the European powers, as well as the competing political philosophies that dominated so early. I think it is interesting how the issue of building a navy was at the very center of the politicking, how it led to the early demise of Adams as a political voice, and how in the end, he along with a few others were vindicated. The personalities such as Adams, Washington, Hamilton, Burr, all come to life, as well as the early commanders and builders of the six ships. That these ships were able to stand up to the mega-powers that were at that time is amazing. The role these ships played in our early survival is crucial. Every American History buff sholud read this book.

Well written, very informative, and highly entertaining.
