5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning book, amazing recipes that are easy to duplicate and a guide to a whole food lifestyle., February 21, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I begins with the fact that this is a beautiful book - it is large, comprehensive with detailed information, recipes and stunning photography. Though as other reviewer pointed out, is a large with a stiff binding that would make it a little tricky to use while mid recipe but it makes a beautiful coffee table book or you could just dive right and not mind the spine taking a bit of a beating if you want to use it regularly when cooking - which I do .

It begins with a great foreword from the Chef, detailing her beginnings and how her journey with food evolved which is always an interesting read to me, then part one which was inspiring - "The Pantry" . It begins with a beautiful picture of a resourceful and well stocked pantry, which immediately had this' 'Type A 'neat freak searching Amazon for all manner of glass storage jars. Though my pantry is rather well stocked, my beans, grains and pulses currently reside in the plastic bags they arrived in, so now I am determined to build up a collection of storage jars so my panty looks as good as this!

The pantry guide covers essentials : grains, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, super foods, oils, vinegars, seaweeds, spices and vegetables together with detailed descriptions of each item which is far more comprehensive than other books that fall in this category. The it looks at what you need in your fridge, freezer, equipment and recipes you can make from your pantry with a week's guide.

Then we move on to the recipes: Breakfast, soups, salads, snacks, drinks, whole meals, and desserts . At first I was a little worried given the overall look of this book that this would be merely a true coffee table book with nothing I could attempt however I was wrong. The recipes did not call for a bunch of random ingredients that live in health food stores only, nor complex technique but was easy to duplicate. The kale slaw and red lentil soup were easy to prepare and delicious and the black rice breakfast pudding is divine (though I did cheat and use store bought nut milk).

Finally there is an extras section containing my life with tea, cleansing and organics . I am a big tea fan but this takes it to a new level by indicating the health properties of various teas. The cleansing section was common sense and yes contains real food not juices and minimal calories!

This book is simply excellent in terms of not only being beautiful and a comprehensive guide to many aspects of a healthy whole food diet, but also having recipes that are most importantly tasty, easy to follow and with readily available ingredients! My new favorite cook and other ideas book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, easy to follow, delicious desserts with a little healthy sprinkled in !, February 21, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Like many people - I love to eat healthily but also simply adore chocolate. Though a good piece of chocolate can have many health benefits, gooey desserts that are chocolate based tend not to be the healthiest thing on the planet so if there is a way to make them healthier and maybe sneak some more veggies into my kids diet - I am all in, hence this cook book fit the bill!

To being with -odd comment, but I like the size and structure of this book. it's a smaller size which makes it easier to work with and the colors, pictures and page layout are simply great making this an easy to follow guide! Also BIG bonus points for this book - many such books, especially those written by bloggers who created their own recipes, do not include nutritional information; this book however contains calorie count, fiber, protein, fat and carb counts and even for those using the Weight Watchers system - the number of points in each dessert! So yes, dieters you can still have your cake and eat it!! This nutritional info makes me far more inclined to use this as I know exactly what I am getting and as a vegetarian, I can use those recipes that include higher levels of protein.

Another big selling point for me was all the great portable bars she makes. I am always looking for something good to add to the kids lunch boxes and honestly my home made granola bars were not greeted with much enthusiasm - but now I have cool, tasty options that my kids love! For example the chocolate chip cookie dough bars pack in 5.5 g fiber and 4 grams of protein, and unlike those bars that can sit forever on a supermarket shelf, I can pronounce all 6 ingredients in these! There is also a recipe for a " real food protein bar" that at just 135 calories packs in 8 grams protein...and tastes better than those odd chewy concoctions that you buy!

There are 6 sections : A guide to the kitchen, ingredients, types of sugars, flours etc; cookies, brownies and bars; desserts for breakfasts ( aka an easier way to get the kids out of bed on a school morning and the super food chocolate bowl is not only delicious but filling with great energy to get me through a morning workout).. Ice cream, milkshakes and smoothies; pies, cakes and cupcakes and finally a guide to puddings, dips and frostings!

Readers will also be happy to know this book is not filled with a shopping list requiring deep pockets at a health food store as you search for odd ingredients. This book requires basic every day food you can buy at the local grocery store!

This book is amazing with easy to follow recipes that taste divine and your guests / kids may never know they are eating cauliflower (lemon melt away pie) or black beans (brownies); getting good levels of fiber and protein. All they will taste is a delicious dessert!

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but not exciting and cook times were not always accurate., February 17, 2015
I am now building quite the collection of vegetarian and vegan cookbooks and particularly enjoy those written by bloggers but this one was sadly not a favorite for me and it was one of those I wish I had maybe tried from a library as opposed to buying.

I did like the personal story at the beginning, which sets the tone for how the author came about a vegan lifestyle and hence developed the blog - it was interesting and was followed by the extremely useful natural foods pantry guide which covers areas such as whole grains, sweeteners, fats/oils and nuts/seeds; and a guide to tools / equipment.

What I did not like as well were the recipes, many of which are simply not new and available all over the web such as the soaked oats breakfast, avocado toast and green juice. Now granted if you have no other cookbooks in this category or blogs you follow, you might like this; but for me, I craved something new and exciting which was absent from this book!

The other issue was though not new and exciting, many of these recipes had many, many steps and as others have remarked the timing, either in cook time or prep time was way off! For example, I made the salt and vinegar chickpea dish but the cook time was almost double that of the published time (and my range is new / I have not had timing issues before) and at the published time they were so far from done one cannot help wonder if these times were tested!

The other thing it would have been great to see is something in the way of nutritional information,. Now I am really not a calorie counter and a vegan diet is often high in good nutrients and lower in calories etc but take for example those glo bars! Nutritional bars can be a power house of energy but also calories, so some guide would be nice, though I did like the fact that each recipe came with a quick blurb indicating if it was sugar free, gluten free etc.

All is all its a good book that unlike a lot of vegan books does not call for a plethora of weird ingredients and complicated kitchen tools, so a newbie would really benefit from this and to be fair it covers all meals, snacks , desserts and drinks. For me, I just wanted something new and different - with accurate instructions - and this did not fit that bill!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid machine, huge capacity and works so well!, January 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Though I am a vegetarian and already eat healthy, I decided to delve more into plant based eating but found that many of the cookbooks I own called for a food processor as well as a blender. As I had already shelled out big bucks for a Vitamix, I was loathe to spend the same on a food processor especially as I was not sure how much I would use it! Reviews suggested the Magimix or Breville were best, but the $300 plus price tag was not that appealing ; the Cuisinart was also up there in consumer reports but Amazon reviews were mixed at best so as this was well received I decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did!

It is really a great size, huge in fact, and holds a lot - both solid and liquid. The pieces are all solid and it comes with one blade you can use for shredding or slicing and another for chopping, mixing and pureeing. I also really liked the fact it has those little sticky grippers on the bottom so it secures quickly and easily to your prep surface. It was also very easy to set up but equally easy to pull apart and clean which is important to me, as I really hate those machines with lots of finicky pieces that can trap food particles and are tough to clean - not the case here!

The machine effortlessly chopped up cashews and the other ingredients I had to make a smooth, and fast cashew blue cheese; then we switched blades to make great coleslaw! It took no time at all and in both cases the end result was perfect! The guide to the right blade is right there on the machine, the bowl is quickly locked into place as is the case with the lid - no more guessing is it set up correctly.

Its aesthetically pleasing enough to leave out on the counter and quite frankly, for the incredible price, I do not think you can go wrong with this food processor. Our last model several years ago was a Cuisinart and this is far more solid, well built, bigger and does a stellar job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing scent, included freebies are great. Price for size and quality is exceptional!, December 31, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For New Years I have always liked to clear the year, say goodbye to the old., welcome in the New and burn a sage smudge for that nice cleansing smell; and I love that smell so much but of course one cannot do that in say a yoga class, or in a hotel room as I travel a lot for business.

I saw this item and decided to purchase. It was not until after I bought it that I realized it contained two bottles and they are both generously sized 4 ounce bottles -compact enough for travel but these will last me some time! The smell is wonderful; subtle, calming and cleansing! It creates a pleasant relaxed environment and I cannot wait to spray on my yoga towel next practice!

This set also came with not one but two mini freebie sets - each contains three bottles of their other scents: Prosperity which has a warm spicy scent -the cinnamon and ginger really come through. Soothing lavender mist which is really relaxing and will make a great pillow spray! And my favorite - Rejuvenate - massage and body oil! I love this so much I am going to buy a full size too - Frankincense is one of my favorite scents ever and mixes well with the peppermint and eucalyptus! It smells simply amazing!

The most amazing thing about these products is the price for the size and quality you get! Many companies charge much more for much less and their quality is nowhere near the quality of this! My new favorite company!! What a great find for the New Year!

1.0 out of 5 stars A lot more for your money -but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for" and this was a streaky mess!, December 29, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I usually use Weimans's but thought I would give this a try as you get almost twice as much for about the same price! Well as the old saying goes - "you get what you pay for" - and this was certainly true in this case! Sure we got a much bigger bottle but it ended up costing us more in the long run as we ended up throwing it after just 2 uses!

It is streaky and tough to use! It takes a tremendous amount of work to buff this out and even then, our appliances were left with a streaky, almost oily residue and quite frankly looked terrible! I threw in the towel and asked my husband to try, he worked hard to try and get the appliances look clean , but to no avail! They looked worse than before we began cleaning!

Suffice to say, this now has a home in the trash and we reverted to the Weiman's which not only took care of cleaning our appliances, but also took care of the mess left behind by this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge bag, holds a lot, lots of different compartments and well made!, December 29, 2014
I can never find the perfect gym bag - now in full disclosure I take everything with me -clothes for work, shoes, make up , shower stuff , hairdryer, hair tools - it's a lot!! I have never mastered the art of compact packing so most gym bags fail miserably for me as my shoes or clothes barely fit or spill out necessitating yet another trip to the lost and found to search for that missing shoe etc!

I searched and searched, went through a plethora of Puma and Nike bags but nothing worked quite right -then I found this! Now this is BIG, really big!! I mentioned to a fellow gym member that I could probably fit a small child it in and she rebutted with the fact that I could probably fit myself in it! It really is a beast of a bag, BUT, it is super light weight, and most importantly for me, holds all my worldly possessions yet I am still able to zip the thing up!

It has one main compartment that is extremely roomy and holds a lot - this would also be an ideal weekender bag - the top has a build zipped in mesh compartment to hold either worn work out clothes, or smaller items. There are two large side pockets, and one center pocket on the outside which would be great for keys /a phone etc.

The strap can be fully adjusted -which is great for me as with the bag being so big, I need the straps made as short as possible. There is a removable padding for the straps which makes them super comfortable and stops the straps digging in your shoulder which other bags tend to do. The material is light weight yet strong, and pretty stylish; and the zippers / pulls are the strong plastic you see on Burton luggage which has always lasted a long time for me! Finally, if you feel inclined to do so -the straps covert so this can be worn as a back pack sort of style!

Though maybe a tad larger than I needed, this is a great gym back / weekend bag - heck maybe the whole week bag, that should last a long time and hold everything I need it to hold!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Innovative and above all, these recipes are attainable. A great read as well as a guide to vegan cooking!, December 27, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years; live in a house with folks that all eat meat and LOVE all things cheese so never made the transition to Vegan - Friday nights after a long week in work are just too perfect when finished with cheese, wine and olives! So when I saw this book that not only looked fun but was written by someone who at one point professed herself as a "die hard cheese nerd" : my curiosity was piqued and I added it to my Christmas list!

I loved it from the moment I opened it and read it in book form which I would never typically do with a cookbook (I was also pretty hungry as my relatively new range decided to die on Christmas day leaving my food plans a little askew; so pretty food porn was the next best thing!). Things to love: no crazy tools required -blender; check, cutting board , check; I have those ...so was happy that I did not see pages requiring dehydrators and other gadgets I will probably never buy! Food I have heard of -stuff I can buy in a regular store -yet another plus! Pretty pics full of old faves - Mac N'Cheese, Pie, Mexican dishes, Asian dishes, spiced food, and yes, even cheese! This is hearty food that one can feed the family with and yet end up with clean plates and full bellies!

Today I made the broccoli chickpea soup as nutritional yeast is always on hand in my pantry, and it was delicious , warm and easy to make; the Creole Corn chowder is next on my list as well as some of the rather delicious looking desserts to serve friends and family over the holidays...only to announce after they were vegan !

This book is chock full of options! It begins with an interesting and easy to follow introduction covering basic ingredients and tools you will need to get started; followed by a basic how to guide on topics such as roasting garlic, making nut butters and cooking various grains. Then I really loved the guide to making condiments and components that can be added to dishes such as tofu sour cream and tempeh bacon. This is followed by a section built for cheese lovers full of ideas to fill that craving without dairy (have yet to try but will update when I do). The book then covers vegan options for beef lovers, pizza lowers, heck even those who adore chocolate! This book is designed to tempt the pallet of those with some big craving who as the title states "could never go vegan"!

Simply love this book and will use regularly. I will update this review as I tempt my meat loving household with these dishes!

Follow up: I seriously doubted I could give up cheese, or that vegan cheese would be that good but just tried making their cashew blue cheese and all I can say is why, I am a convert!

Dare to Kiss: With Natural Lip Care Products and Cosmetics (Cosmetic Making Book 5)
Dare to Kiss: With Natural Lip Care Products and Cosmetics (Cosmetic Making Book 5)
Price: $6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to all things natural in lip care and color!, December 13, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Though somewhat of a professed health nut -I am obsessed with learning more about exercise, healthy eating, natural remedies and so on - but I fall short with some of my beauty habits. Every morning I leave the gym after a healthy breakfast and good workout - and put on a full face of make up where my lipstick is probably ingested day after day even though I cannot pronounce most of the ingredients in it!

This book provoked my interest and I was pleasantly surprised. Let us to a basic but need to know about this book - yes it is currently free BUT unlike many that fall in this space, this is very well written, very informative and the author is both knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter! The author began this journey as the owner of a holistic Health Practice in the UK, where she specialized in aromatherapy and Holistic skin care; and in making her own products, is sharing in this comprehensive and easy to follow way.

The book is broken up by beginning to look at what currently sits in our shop bought products; the basic anatomy of our mouth and some typical issues one might suffer from. The author then takes us through typical ingredients that will be used in making our own lip remedies at home. Then delves into making lip treatments, balms, lipstick, lip pencils, lip stains and lip glosses! There is even a section on lip plumpers and the ingredients which include Ylang Ylang and Grapefruit oil, make this a delightfully pleasant concoction. It is extremely informative, and not surprisingly this author knows this topic well

The ingredients are probably not things that most of us have sitting around in the house but things that can be readily found online or in health food stores, but most importantly, you know what you are getting and putting on your body.

This book means you could easily make all your own lip products, or even venture out ans gift as gifts, a small side business etc. It is that good a guide! I will admit I have yet to try any of the colors but will amend my review when I do.

Great guide and a keeper on my Kindle!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple but wow is this effective!, December 6, 2014
This review is from: Harley's 5-Factor Workout (DVD)
This is an excellent work out DVD and works well for both home and travel.
I am a gym rat, I work out each day mixing up weights / cardio, swimming and yoga; but this Thanksgiving we were out of town staying with family and I still wanted to get a daily workout in that would be easy to accomplish and not take too much time out of my day - this fit the bill!
It begins with a warm up, followed by a choice of 5 different workouts, one for each weekday, that rotate through different muscles so by the end of the week you have worked each body part. Then there is a cool down! This is short, about 30 minutes from start to finish, so if you wanted more, you could do two or more of the routines together - it is your choice how to customize!
Harley uses basic old school exercises - crunches, curls, side bends, jogging and on the first workout I thought "wow, this is super easy"....that was until the next morning when my muscles ached! As stated before , I work out a lot so thought this was a breeze until I felt those muscles and realized that this old school movements are really effective in toning and strengthening key muscles groups! I should note that he gives the option to use weights and I used 8lb dumbbells.
Harley keeps it simple, explains the moves well and had various options for different levels. There is no crazy background or music, its low key, simple and easy to both follow and most importantly get form correct!
The only downside I can see is this might get a bit repetitive! There is one warm up and one cool down and though it does add or remove an exercise each day, it might get old fast, but there again, you could also master this quickly. Now I use some of these exercises in my gym routine.
This is a great, simple workout DVD that works, plain and simple! I came home from that Thanksgiving trip surprised to be a couple of pounds lighter , despite not planning nor needing it and credit this DVD for that!
